Is it extremely notable that Donald Trump didn’t get a photo-op with Will & Kate?

ROYAL ROTA Her Majesty The Queen and President of The United States of America at State Banquet, Buckingham Palace, London, England, UK

I kept waiting to see what photo-ops Donald Trump would get with the British royal family, and whether there would be any kind of “money shot” of Trump with the younger royals, Harry, Meghan, Kate and/or William. Meghan clearly begged off because of her maternity leave, which we knew ahead of time. Harry found a way to have lunch with the Trumps but not be photographed side-by-side with Bigly, and Harry merely lurked in the back of the Royal Collection photo-op. Meanwhile, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge seem to have entirely avoided the photo-op. They were briefly in the same frame (much like Harry), but in the background of the state banquet shots. This is notable, says Tom Sykes at the Daily Beast. While Harry got criticized for largely blanking on the Trumps, Sykes argues that it’s even more notable that Will & Kate seemed to completely avoid any photo-ops:

Trump, however, has been left unable to complain and demand a photo call with Harry or William, because he has been given several moments with the queen and Prince Charles, who significantly outrank Harry, who is sixth in line to the throne, and therefore not obligated to take part in state occasions. Trump’s cold-shouldering by William and Kate is arguably a more provocative move on the part of the young royals. As second in line to the throne, it could be argued that William and his wife do have a responsibility to greet Trump one-on-one in front of the cameras, but so far they have studiously avoided doing so.

At the state banquet, they were both seated several places away from Trump, in what was clearly a deliberate (and successful) attempt to restrict the president’s ability to harness the popularity of the young royals. Harry was never scheduled to attend the state banquet, but his absence was still (correctly) interpreted as a snub to Trump. It was also noticeable that when Trump visited Westminster Abbey on Monday to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior, he was not accompanied by William, as might have been expected, but by Prince Andrew, the queen’s second son. Andrew’s name-recognition in the wider U.S. is minimal, meaning the trip will have little PR value for the 2020 campaign. Instead, Trump will have to be content with images of him greeting the queen and Prince Charles.

And yet, President Trump has made it clear to those close to him that he actually does care about his reputation among the British royals. According to several former and current White House officials, Trump will grow visibly more animated or excited when the topic of meeting prominent members of royal families comes up, including the British royals. He makes a point of repeatedly asking aides about what he and others should wear during state visits and high-profile events with foreign countries’ royalty, the sources said, and enthusiastically asks advisers about what kind of pomp and pageantry he should expect.

“He is sensitive about the perceptions that he offended… the Queen,” a former White House official said, referencing a moment last year when the U.S. president appeared to briefly and awkwardly walk in front of the then 92-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. “He also really just wants the [British] royal family to like him.” Two people close to the president said that on multiple occasions he’s complained privately about a media narrative that he believes portrays the British royal family as hating Trump and not wanting to spend time with him while he’s in town. “The president thinks that it’s ‘fake news’ trying to make it look like they don’t like him personally, when really [he feels that] they do love Trump,” one of these sources said.

Further, a Whitehall official told The Times that the queen’s meeting last year with President Trump was “kept to the bare minimum. The Queen will do her duty, but among the wider family, they were not as enthusiastic as they were when [President Barack] Obama came over.”

[From The Daily Beast]

Yep. Here’s the thing: I never want to hear any more faux pearl-clutching about how g–damn “political” Meghan is and how she’s “breaking protocol” because she expresses a mild opinion about this social issue or that economic issue or whatever. Because what this state visit has shown is that ALL of the royals are political animals and they all make their own choices about where and when to be “political.” Will and Kate’s absence from nearly all of the Trump-visit activities WAS a political statement, especially given their eagerness to hang out (repeatedly) with the Obamas. And I don’t blame them at all, to be clear. I actually think they were very clever to largely avoid all the Trump shenanigans. But let’s remember this when the Daily Mail does a blaring ALL-CAPS headline about Meghan being “too political” when she, like, talks about microfinancing or eats an avocado.

Oh yeah, Will and Kate were totally avoiding Trump, and it seemed to be with the full approval of the Queen and Charles. There was a clear effort to keep them separate from him, no good photos of any young royal with the Trumps. It was really apparent in my mind.

I don’t think anyone here blames them for that, considering who Trump is in general and the specific comments he has made about Kate and Diana (and Meghan), but it was notable.

    • Lightpurple says:

And no photos of the Queen, Charles, Camilla, William and Kate with Nagini, Tom Riddle, Crabbe & Doyle or Tiffany.

      • Eleonor says:

I have noticed that too! I bet Ivanka would have killed for a photo with Kate and William.

      • madthinking says:

OMG “Nagini, Tom Riddle, Crabbe & Doyle or Tiffany.” Poor Tiffany she doesn’t even warrant a fake name, LOL. This made me spit out my coffee just too true and funny.

      • Lunde says:

All of the younger Royals seemed to go out of their way to avoid being photographed with the Trump family.

Having seen a lot of State visits over the past 50 years – this one very much felt like a “State visit by numbers”. The Royals had to host Trump because the Government had invited him – but there seemed to be little personal warmth in the event.

The Queen used the “fake delighted” smile that she has perfected over the past 75 years (she uses the same one when she tours toilet factories etc). The Royals put on jewels and turned up to eat dinner but there was nothing “personal” in the arrangements. The Queen did not take the Trumps riding, or driving to see her land and the younger Royals did not take Nagini et al on a personal visit or to visit their homes. They got a standard state visit – but no extras.

      • Megan says:

Since Trump’s spawn gate crashed, I don’t think the younger royals had any obligation to entertain them. Had they actually been invited, that would have been different.

      • babyboo says:

I feel Trump has been served, cold slow cooked windsor soup. Royals have been doing this for centuries. He is clueless. I feel he was dined and wined yet somehow.. completely effed over. Time will tell ;)

      • BayTampaBay says:

@babyboo, You are so correct and it is all down to the fact that the QEII is one smart cookie. I am sure she could negotiate a great BREXSHIT deal better than any elected politician.

      • NightOwl says:

        @babyboo I think you’re right!

    • StartupSpouse says:

Not sure where to put my comment, but someone on Twitter pointed out the phalick shape of the white parts of Trump’s tuxedo and now I can’t unsee it!

      • AnnaKist says:

Hahaha! Look at Her Majesty. I think she’s realised that he pongs. She is not enjoying herself, poor love. One must hold one’ breath. One must endure.

      • MamaT says:

YOU MADE MADE MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • olive says:

i’ll fault them for it – i wouldn’t want to hang out with trump either, but we always hear about how William will be king one day, so he should be doing his duty and meeting with heads of state. just like how he met with obama – he even introduced george to obama! not expecting that to happen with trump, but it’s very frustrating to see the media slamming harry for his behavior around trump when william gets off scot-free doing the exact same thing AS SECOND IN LINE. william should be held to a higher standard than harry. he should’ve had face time with trump. suck it up, get used to meeting unpleasant people, you’re going to be king one day, diplomacy is what you have to do.

      • Lightpurple says:

Trump brought most of his Cabinet. This was supposedly a meeting to work on a post-Brexit trade agreement. William and Kate spent their time with the Cabinet members, the people working on the trade agreement. I would consider listening to Mnuchin through a whole dinner sufficient sucking it up. Trump can’t complain

      • olive says:

@Lightpurple i felt bad but i had to laugh when i saw kate walking in with steven mnuchin for the state dinner – what a task she was given! don’t remember who william got paired up with, but kate certainly worked that night!

      • xdanix says:

@olive I hear your point, I do, but Trump is not just any other awful head of state they will be expected to host in their time. Leaving aside his general awfulness, there are very specific incidences here with the comments Trump has made about Diana and Kate that to my mind, absolutely mean I support William not doing his duty on this occasion. You would think- or certainly HOPE- that he will not have to meet with many heads of stage who have said such incredibly insulting and awful things about his wife and mother (and most recently his sister-in-law, though it’s quite something to be able to say Trump’s comments about Meghan were perhaps the MILDEST of the three sets of comments!) in his lifetime, because most people do not MAKE those kinds of comments publicly.

      • olive says:

@xdanix i don’t need to be convinced of how awful he is, i’m well aware of that! but harry is getting slammed for not talking to trump or ivanka at that event, even though he’s 6th in line and not obligated to participate in state functions like this, while there’s no coverage on why the second in line isn’t even being seen with trump, which should be a bigger deal. with that in mind, i can’t support william not being seen with trump. harry was at least able to get over his (obviously valid) negative feelings long enough to make an appearance at the royal collection event – why couldn’t william? is he being protected so that when he is king, there are no photos of him with trump, because hopefully trump will end up in prison?

      • Becks1 says:

@olive – I don’t blame William for not wanting to meet with him, but I generally agree with the overall tone of your comment. William is going to be king, the expectations for him and these types of visits should be different than for Harry. The fact that Harry is being accused of “snubbing” Trump while William gets a pass is annoying.

      • olive says:

@Becks1 exactly, that’s my point – the difference in expectations for william and harry is all askew for what they should be, based on their futures. i KNOW trump is unprecedentedly terrible and awful, we all do, i don’t know why that’s a defense when you’re such a high-ranking senior royal like william. he seems like a coddled baby, tbh.

      • Nic919 says:

I don’t think it was fair for the media to make it look like Harry was making a political statement by leaving the photo op to avoid dump when William essentially did the same thing at the state dinner. I don’t blame either William or Harry or Kate for avoiding Dump as much as possible, but they basically all did the same thing and only Harry gets called political.

      • Betsy says:

I would fault them for it, but I think TQ probably didn’t want to reward Donnie with a photo of him with the Royal “youngsters” and so it was with her blessing – probably her urging, he’s an odious chump – that they stayed was far as they politely could.

  2. Susie says:

I hope somebody points this out to Trump. I want him to say something about all the young royals. That will piss off all the royals of any country. I don’t want trump getting invited to anymore state diners anywhere.

    • AnnaKist says:

I’ll bet we’ll be hearing an announcement in the not-too-distant future that our smug, conservative prime minister, Scott Morrison (“Sco-Mo” [I kid you not], or “The Liar from the Shire”, depending on your political persuasion) and trump will be meeting. From what I read, trump won’t travel this far, but SM doesn’t mind the odd bit of first-class travel and topping up his frequent-flyer points. When SM comes to America, please detain him there (off-shore is fine) and, by all means, take as long as you need to “process” him.

      • CrazyCatLady says:

It would be great if Dutton went on the visit as well.
I despair for our country ATM. I had such high hopes for this year.

      • Belly says:

I hear so many people regurgitating the shite they’ve read on FBook… I’m also despairing for our country.

    • maisie says:

Bravo to all the young British royals for avoiding Trump. You know he would have said something ghastly and crass about Diana to them. Why should they be forced to endure that, or the attentions of Trump’s uninvited spawn? It’s bad enough that Kate had to suffer through hanging with the awful Mnuchin – he probably babbled on to her about how his wife is British (a tart, but British). Ugh. All of the Trump Crime Family are gross and unworthy of anyone’s regard, especially the British royals. The only reason he got this state dinner is because Theresa May invited him, something which disgusted everyone in the UK (except May and Trump’s British twin Boris Johnson). And Trump paid her back by slagging her off.

  3. Lightpurple says:

It’s a big deal and it was masterful. The entire family did its job to represent Great Britain in what was actually a trade negotiation session, forced upon them by Brexit and Theresa May while protecting one another from the disgraceful Trumps.

The Queen, Charles, and Camilla did their jobs and stood for photographs and stuff with Orange Voldemort and Melania but there does not exist a single picture of any of them posing with Trump spawn, not even Nagini, who was so desperate to be seen as on equal footing as a Queen and Princess that you could smell it.

William and Kate showed up at the dinner and mingled with Cabinet officials. It’s a trade meeting so they focused on that real aspect of the job, the trade talk people, depriving Trump and his spawn of souvenirs.

Harry did his part, supporting his grandmother at the luncheon by keeping Nagini far away from her while also keeping himself far away from Orange Voldemort.

Sophie and Anne kicked into gear at the dinner, keeping Nagini and Jared far away from any photo opportunities with the Queen or Charles while managing to avoid Orange Voldemort themselves.

Andrew took Day 2 and could only be seen at a conference table. Charles and Camilla handled the second dinner with Camilla arming herself with that full glass of red wine, which must have scared the white clad Nagini.

    • Mignionette says:

Love it – Best commentary ever !!!

    • IlsaLund says:

Makes you wonder if the Royal Family drew up a battle plan as to how to interact and manage the hillbilly Trump’s😂😂😂

      • Lightpurple says:

I’m pretty sure they did. Nagini has been trying to position herself as royalty for two years now and on equal footing with Will & Kate, Harry & Meghan. When the engagement was announced, her twitter feed was an obnoxious, laughable attempt to score a wedding invitation that never came. And for all her pathetic efforts to spin this trip as Princess Barbie goes to London to meet the Queen, all she has to show for it is a few pictures of Harry talking to someone else while she preens in the picture, a picture of Sophie looking in the opposite direction from her at a dinner table, and Andrew sitting across from her and looking in the other direction at a conference table. The world made fun of her hat, she was booed loudly outside of Downing Street, and her Buckingham Palace window/balcony stint, far away from anyone who matters, has launched a thousand memes. The BRF put her soundly in her place along with her brothers and the sister she pretends doesn’t exist.

      • AnnaKist says:

Oh, I really, really love this coverage! Top marks, Lightpurple! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

      • BabaBlacksheep says:

I mean Meghan did a real kiss ass piece on Ivanka on her blog…,

    • Digital Unicorn says:

The RF expertly trolled and managed the Trumps, maybe they should give lessons to congress. Just joking. He was on his best behaviour with them which has surprised everyone, the other drama with the politicians was expected. He even behaved himself during the D-Day celebrations yesterday and today (so far).

The Trump crotch goblins were also surprisingly quiet other than a few group posts on SM. Normally their mugs are everywhere – someone put the fear of god into them all about how to behave with the RF.

Bu then again, look how awed/cowed he was when he met the Saudi King. He’s intimidated by royalty.

    • Christin says:

I admit to being skeptical at first, but the royals really did achieve a masterful balance. Thankfully there are no chummy photos of the younger royals and the taxpayer-funded Tagalongs.

    • Mellie says:

haha…I love the breakdown. They are professionals for sure, they knew what the hell they were doing. I can just see them all sitting around the war room having a dry run. Hilarious!

    • Feebee says:

      Masterfully written take!

    • swirlmamad says:

I adore everything about this post.

    • Andy says:

Thank you @Lightpurple! This makes me feel a tiny bit better about this awful display. The pain of seeing this grifter legitimized by a state visit with the royal family has been making me feel ill. I’m sorry if I’m asking something that has already been explained, but were the royal family forced into this visit? Its shocking to me that they would provide him with any access given what we know about the Russian interference and his role in accepting their help in swinging the election. I would think they would want to stay as far away from him as possible??

      • Lightpurple says:

Theresa May invited him, forcing the Queen to entertain him. His spawn were NOT invited but came anyway. They could have been barred entry but he would have made an international incident out of it so they were allowed to attend events but given limited (Ivanka with Harry, Sophie, Andrew) or no (Junior, Eric, Tiffany) access.

      • Andy says:

        Thank you. Barf.

    • Catherine says:

Lightpurple!! YOU NAILED IT😂😂👑👑👑it was MASTERFUL

    • kesley says:

      Excellent post Lightpurple!

The best recap of everything that went down and best analysis.

    • Carolind says:

Who, in this context, is Nagini. The nicknames are much too much.

      • NightOwl says:

        Nagini = Wanna-be-princess Ivanka

Also, masterful that Junior/Eric/Tiffany had no access. I had not realized that and now notice that they are in no photos beyond that sibling photo where they are all dressed oddly.

  4. boz says:

Trump’s tweet defending the photographer who took nude sunbathing pics of Kate won’t soon be forgotten by Will and Kate. I would think they would eat glass before giving him that photo he’s so desperate to have. Not sure that’s political. Feels more personal.

    • IlsaLund says:

It’s both political and personal. Trump’s campaign would have used photos with the young Royals as propaganda. There are many photos and video of the young Royals with the Obamas. And we all know, Trump was keen to show he was as well liked and respected as Obama.

      • boz says:

Yes, that’s clear and expected, as that’s the game. Simply saying that at heart this is personal.

    • madthinking says:

It’s a bit of both, but from the personal side pretty sure neither Harry nor William want to hang out with the guy who said he wanted to sleep with their mother but she needed an HIV test before he would. Trump’s just so classy.

    • liz says:

Trump insulted Diana years ago. That has not been forgotten by either of her sons. Add that to the insults to their wives and hell will freeze over before they grant him a photo op.

  5. tempest prognosticator says:

The visit was well choreographed to keep the younger royals out of Trump’s orbit. I hope he noticed.

  6. Weaver says:

Did anyone notice Melania’s very Meghan-like outfits? She wore at least three near imitations of Meghan’s outfits including the long dress with the cape.

    • Kylie says:

The dress with the cape reminded me more of a dress that Queen Letizia has worn in the past.

    • Mego says:

      I did!

    • Bella DuPont says:

Melania’s never afraid to copy. Remember her plagiarising Michelle’s speech(es)?

    • madthinking says:

I still feel Melania wears a lot of the same silhouette in her dress though. Yes she’s not afraid of copying.

    • ADS says:

Well spotted! Sometimes I wonder whether Melania is subtly trolling her husband. Like the dress is a subliminal way of saying she supports Meghan’s opinion of him.

      • NightOwl says:

I think we all still cannot believe that there is such malevolence and evil in the administration. I long ago stopped having any sort of empathy or pity for any of the family members with the exception of their youngest son. Melania is doing Melania and doubtful shading anyone, but appropriating without second thought.

    • Some chick says:

      That UFO hat, tho!

Fashion around this visit (which, let’s be real, is all that matters) has been amazing.

All the white dresses! Could we be more obvi?!

In my opinion, Kate actually wore it best with her McQueen. Camilla and TQ both looked lovely.

Melania looked like she stopped at David’s Bridal on the way to the airport, and Marchioness Rose looked like she was wearing a (very expensive) nightgown.

Like or dislike the tulle trend, but Kate brought it.

Meg can’t come back soon enough for me! Totally respect her for giving this one a pass, tho.

    • Betsy says:

I thought the white suit was Diana cosplay.

  7. Mignionette says:

I am guessing the Foreign Office would have had their ears to the ground and done their intel on Trump and his entourage and realised that a larger point of the visit was to leverage political clout.

On that basis and to remain a-political themselves they attempted to minimise any collateral damage. This is why State visits are often limited to a US Presidents second term, as everyone knows about this trick.

Trump aside, the biggest win was Ivanka and the other Trumpettes being denied their photo ops with the younger Royals.

This was after all supposed to be a working visit at a time when Great Britain is in dire need of concrete resolution to the Brexit chaos that is tearing the country apart. Showing solid support for Trump could have been interpreted as the House of Windsor showing their party politics. This way they have not be used as part of Trumps agenda to push for a hard Brexit which ultimately only benefits the US in Trade deal negotiations.

I am inclined to say Liz played this one to the beat once again.

    • Lolo says:

This isn’t true. Trump is only the third US president to be invited for an official state visit. The other two were Bush 43 and Obama and both of those visits occurred in their first terms.

    • Lightpurple says:

The biggest win was denying Ivanka a photo op with the Queen.

  8. IlsaLund says:

Given the vile comments Trump has made about Meghan, Diana and Kate, why ever should the young Royals be obligated to do a photo op with that orange slime ball. They all did their duty and that was enough. Trump can sit and stew on all the photos and videos of the Obamas interacting with the Royals. Yeah, orange chump, they like the Obamas, you they just tolerate out of duty.

And he looks ridiculous stuffed into that tuxedo. Who was his tailor? Was this done on purpose?

    • Mignionette says:

I think his Tailor had the last laugh. It’s also possible that in his vanity Trump lied about his measurements, thus throwing the whole suit off.

    • Bella DuPont says:

“Given the vile comments Trump has made about Meghan, Diana and Kate”

Isn’t it interesting that his horrible comments so far have been targeted exclusively at the female members of the royal family?

      • Mignionette says:

The female members marrying into the family. This is very well choreographed attack. He knows who is off limits and who is game.

      • Some chick says:

      • The Recluse says:

It’s a shame Drumpf’s big dumb mouth never gave Princess Anne an opportunity to verbally eviscerate him in turn, but like you said, he goes only for the ‘weaker members of the herd’.

  9. Darla says:

I don’t know if it was political, could be personal. I think it is kinda ludicrous to expect William doesn’t hold a grudge about the disgusting things Trump said about his mother. I would. And then you have Kate who knows he was drooling over her nude photos. I am not saying it wasn’t political at all, but my feeling is it was mainly personal. I mean, think about it, shouldn’t it be?

    • Darla says:

Think about it! “I could have had your mother but I would have forced her to take an Aids test first”! Picture someone saying that about your mom. It’s just unbelievable what we have done to the world, it really is. Every day my mind still boggles. We forced this down their throat. This monstrosity.

      • Esmom says:

Omg. I didn’t know that’s what he said. He’s such a piece of garbage. His ignorance and pettiness knows no bounds and I feel like we will never be rid of the tarnish he’s brought to the office. I wonder every day how we will recover from this.

      • Darla says:

Yeah he said it on the Stern show. He was obsessed with Diana, in his trademark creepy sexual way. Just awful.

      • Christin says:

Those awful comments were made when Diana wasn’t here to clarify that she wanted nothing to do with him.

I recall reading long ago that he very much wanted a relationship with her, but she had the common sense and instincts to politely avoid him. He also allegedly used her and Charles via false planted stories to promote his NY properties.

      • Mego says:

Oh that’s vile. Yes it was notable and completely understandable why they didn’t pose with him and his family. They did their duty and handled their dislike and displeasure for Trump admirably in my view. You don’t have to stoop to Trump’s level to make your point effectively.

      • Hermione says:

@Darla. Yes, it’s criminal and mind blowing what U.S. citizens have foisted onto the rest of the world. It makes you weep that this monstrosity is galavanting around world spreading discord and ignorance wherever he goes. The U.S. should hang it’s head in shame for what it’s done.

      • Capepopsie says:

I had no idea he said that! How terribly rude! So disrespectful! Ofcourse the Young royals wont
touch him with a pair of pliers❗️

      • HK9 says:

Holy Mother of God I had no idea that he said that. What an assh-le.

      • Tiffany :) says:

Wow, that is a disgusting quote! I know he’s terrible, and yet I am still surprised at how awful he can be. He’s unimaginably terrible. One of the worst people alive, and we made him president. SMH.

    • Mignionette says:

I think there is a political element to it but not from the Royals. Rather because Trump is so vehemently so pro Brexit I sense the RF made sure to keep their distance so as not to be seen to be endorsing him.

Had Trump kept his views on what SHOULD be happening in UK politics and more specifically Brexit to himself, I suspect there may have been more photo interactions.
This was heavily choreographed by the RF with great help from the Foreign Office.

    • LORENA says:

Yes. Just like with Trump calling Meghan nasty, its disgusting. How could it not be personal for all of them?

    • Cee says:

I agree. What he has said about Diana is disgusting. I wonder the restrain her sons showed by not clocking him in the face.

  10. Lindy79 says:

Yep, compare how they were with the Obamas compared to the Trumps…yeah that was a choice.

I also love how he looks in that suit, it will never not make me laugh, he looks utterly ridiculous, fat, bloated and it emphasises his tiny hands and feet.

    • Emily says:

Pete Souza re-posted the pic of Obama meeting little George in his robe and captioned it something about how they actually liked Obama. That gave me a good chuckle.

      • kerwood says:

I forgot about that. Can you imagine the Royal Family letting Trump, his ‘former model’ wife or his crotch goblins (nice one!) anywhere near the Royal children? NEVER GONNA HAPPEN.

      • Traveler says:

That is one of my very favorite photographs. A moment of genuine innocence and humanity between a great leader and a future king.
All of the beauty of that simple moment seems lost now and it makes me want to cry.

      • Emily says:

@Traveler – I love it, too. And I remember when I first saw it being kind of awed that someday George will be grown and a king and that picture of him will probably still be circulating.

    • kesley says:

He knew he looked like crap which is why he looked miserable in that photo. This is mean of me to say but I like how irritated he looked and how he knew we were all going to make fun of him. Even Trump supporters couldn’t defend him dressing like that and instead talked about how Melania looked.

  11. PlayItAgain says:

Does he realize that his waistcoat doesn’t fit? It’s way too long in the front!! Did the tailor do it on purpose? I kind of like the idea of a rogue tailor out there, doing his bit for the resistance.

    • Lightpurple says:

None of their suits fit well. Junior and Eric also had really horribly fitted suits.

    • vava says:

LOL….I was reading an article written by a professional tailor who went into great detail on the horrible fit of all of Trump’s suits (and long ties). This white waistcoat emphasizes his enormous gut and it’s long because he wears his trousers low due to said pot belly.

      • NightOwl says:

Oh gosh isn’t that such a horrible visual, thinking about that potbelly?!

      • Tiffany :) says:

Can you imagine being a tailor and having to be up close to that belly? Having to reach inside the pants to pin and fold, sitting with your face at waist level to make sure you don’t stick him? Yikes! Not enough money in the world.

  12. Skylark says:

I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when he came across Camilla’s wink. :D

And yes, kudos to Queenie and co for a job well done.

  13. Lizzie says:

i’ll believe this was a epic level royal troll job when there is a picture in a month of obama holding harry and meghan’s baby

    • kerwood says:

Obama is working on a sports initiative in Africa. If he travels to England, of course he’s going to visit with his friend Prince Harry, meet Megan if they haven’t already met and get a chance to meet wee Archie. The pictures would cause Trump to stroke out in rage.

  14. AprilMay says:

Oh please Will and Kate were seated where they always are because of protocal. They’ve sat in those positions at every State Banquet they’ve attended.
And as for their not doing any other engagements, they rarely do. The only one I can think of was when they did one the day after the State Banquet with the Chinese in 2015. They’ve attended the Banquets for the Spanish and Dutch ones but never joined them at anything else. They also welcomed the President of Singapore in 2014 as the royals who’d visited the country most recently but didn’t take part in the Banquet.
They absolutely should be doing more at these things but when have these two ever done more than the absolute bare minium?
“He makes a point of repeatedly asking aides about what he and others should wear during state visits and high-profile events with foreign countries’ royalty”- And yet his clothes for the Banquet was all wrong! Your waistcoat should not be longer than your jacket, sleeves should be shorter and should be looser fitting.

  15. Billbop says:

I love the Queen, she is the last of the royal family who never acts petty or shows how she feels politically. She understands her role (not a president or prime minister), unlike the younger royals.

Once she is gone things are really going to change and that is sad. She is the end of an era of graciousness. It won’t surprise me if the royal family basically becomes obsolete once she dies. Think of everything she has seen and lived through historically. I am in awe of her history!

Charles, William, and Henry bore the hell out of me, all of them are just silly petty men. I wonder if that ever bothers the Queen.

  16. Hermione says:

Also very telling is how nothing was posted on the Sussex Instagram about the State Visit and KP’s Instagram posted pics but didn’t once mention Trump by name😂😂

  17. Max says:

People always say that Harry hates Trump, which I think he does, however, I just think William may despise Trump even more than Harry does. William was extremely close to his mother, and took her side in the divorce. I find the whole family extremely PR driven, and with as much faults as William has, he knows how to keep his mouth shut and stay out of certain controversies.

    • Darla says:

I agree, I think William does hate him more, and because of Diana. I think this has been given such a pass-over by the media and all commentators because they want to critique Harry and of course, Meghan. I think William was and is hard pressed seriously not to throw trump through a window. That guy’s got a temper, he was very close to his mother. I think he would be right to do so, but that’s neither here nor there. The point is, the media doesn’t talk about this. Maybe it’s because they would rather go after Meghan, maybe it’s because they won’t discuss things that show just what a monster America put in the WH, or maybe it’s both.

      • Max says:

Yes the press has overlooked that. Harry and Meghan get more traction so that’s the story they keep going with. William wanted no parts of Trump.

    • Mumbles says:

Not only that, but in 2012 when that whole Kate topless photo brouhaha broke, Trump was tweeting how Kate should just let it rip and show ‘em off.

Maybe I’m missing some of the coverage but who is slamming Harry for “snubbing” Trump? He was there in the morning when the Queen was showing the Trumps the memorabilia. Not going to the banquet – well, he has a newborn. Even if he is snubbing him – and good for him – I just don’t see much criticism. This whole “why do H&M get crap when W&K don’t?” stuff only makes sense when H&M get crap.

And if it’s based on the DM, we all need to accept that that rag is right wing crap who favors W&K because someone in the Middleton camp has been feeding them stuff since the mid-2000s.

    • kerwood says:

I think you’re right. William was close to Diana and shared a lot of her sorrows, even if it was inappropriate to expose a child to all that drama. William is also the one who keeps his emotions in check. Harry was allowed to give 45 the swerve but William couldn’t. So he had to shake hands with the man who leered over both his mother AND his wife. I think 45 is VERY lucky that William didn’t cold-cock him. NOBODY would fault him for it.

It is very interesting how there was no mention of what 45 said about Kate and her nude pictures. But it was ‘nasty Megan’ 24/7. It’s as if the press were trying to protect Kate. On one hand it pisses me off because it shows that Megan is the constant sacrificial lamb in that family. On the other hand, being called ‘nasty’ by 45 is different than having him getting off over your naked body. In fact, being called nasty by 45 is a badge of honour for any self-respecting woman.

      • Fiffy says:

@kerwood I don’t think the press mentioned his comments on Kate as much because the meghan ‘nasty’ thing was more recently and the white house and piers Morgan have kept it alive by repeated mentions and ‘corrections’. I also don’t think mentioning the ‘nasty’ comments have caused excessive bad coverage of meghan either, only from those who loathe meghan and trump supporters (and both). Most news sites rightly disagree with trump

      • 90sgirl says:

Kerwood you are right, the press was trying to make the story about Harry and Megan and Trump. That reporter went out of his way to bring Meghan up, but hardly any reporters mentioned that Trump basically Implied Kate was stupid to go Sun bathing Topless in her position.
No way did the British Royal press want what Trump said about Kate to gain attention too.

  18. Sue Denim says:

Anyone have info on the Queen’s tiara? I read somewhere that it was given to her from Burma to ward off evil… I wonder if there’s more to her choice of jewelry in general?

  19. sabrina says:

I’m surprised that at some point, when Trump was introduced to W&K (surely this happened!?) that someone didn’t take a photo. Not an orchestrated “you stand here, you stand there” photo but a more spontaneous one?

Were journalists explicitly warned about this?

    • Skylark says:

If it happened, and I’m not convinced it did since trump would have been blabbing about it, then it was off-camera, away from the press. That’s the simplest and most logical answer.

    • Mignionette says:

Easy to avoid if the more intimate convos happened in private, especially as protocol dictates that you cannot disclose the contents of private convos with the Queen in public.
So essentially the Trumps have been silenced and can’t use that interaction to score points….

      • Hermione says:

That’s never stopped blabber mouth before. Wouldn’t be at all surprised if something comes out later on about private conversations.

      • Mignionette says:

True but my sense is Trump respects the Queen.

    • Lightpurple says:

Photography was limited and not allowed after a certain point.

  20. G says:

The Trumps did get one picture of the entire family with Prince Charles and Camila from the dinner they hosted at the US Ambassador’s House.

  21. TheOriginalMia says:

Some are saying the younger royals stayed away because of Trump’s tendency to use royals to promote his properties. He used a meet and greet photo with Diana and Charles to sell condos, stating they or Diana would be purchasing an apartment in one of his towers. It was a lie, of course, but that’s exactly what he would do if he had a current photo with any of the younger gen royals, especially Harry given Meghan’s citizenship.

  22. Cee says:

The Obamas were invited to stay at BP and they met George in the intimacy of the Cambridge’s apartment. The Trumps barely got a nod from anyone besides TQ, Charles and Cam.

  23. Mego says:

Lainey posted a picture of the three of them, all smiles, with the lovely Obamas during their visit.

  24. adastraperaspera says:

The Royals know that the Trump train is derailing soon. The future king is shunning them and their ilk. Also, the Royals absolutely do not want any “Chamberlain shakes Hitler’s hand” photographs out there for posterity.

    • Betsy says:

The Chamberlein pic was my first thought. They were doing all they could not to give any real legitimacy to these pedo clowns.

  25. Thaisajs says:

Seems like there’s a pretty stark difference between how William and Kate acted this time with Trump vs. when President Obama came over. They had the Obamas visit in their London residence and you even got a cute photo of the president meeting George in his PJs and robe.

They won’t even be photographed together with Trump.

  27. Leena says:

What is that strange shadow (?) on Melania’s dress that looks like a belt with a bag hanging down?

    • Erinn says:

I think it’s from a flash – it looks like a head and shoulder silhouette where someone would have been in front of the flash. You can see the light on her bare arm.

  28. Lowrider says:

The whole royal family are a bunch of actors so I don’t know why people say Meghan is “actressy” and won’t fit in. She’s in her element.

The BRF is so powerless and at the mercy of the government who tells them when to jump. If by chance Corbyn becomes PM, I’m curious to see how he will treat them. 🤭

    • Leena says:

@ Lowrider – Aren’t we all, given that he would have to have a weekly meeting with the Queen at BP!

    • Tina says:

PMs usually fall in love with the Queen, no matter their previous thoughts on the monarchy. Tony Blair was mostly a republican before taking office, and by the time Diana died he was trying to protect the Queen. (I think Cherie Blair didn’t succumb though, she’s still a republican). But the Queen is better with men than women, she and Thatcher had an…interesting relationship by all accounts. (May was mostly subservient, which I don’t think the Queen likes either). Corbyn will be a tough nut to crack, but I have no doubt the Queen would manage it.

  29. mycomment says:

I agree with so many other commenters… it’s even more noteworthy that the younger royals had no time for princess complicit and boy blunder… because you know princess was dying to strike up a relationship with any one of them.. and everybody ignores tiffany.
although it would have been awesome had barron been there — because I bet the princes would have latched onto him and been eager to share soccer stories..
and meghan begging off because of maternity leave… had it been the obamas, there’d be a picture album full of shots of the obamas holding the baby… recall ‘the baby whisperer’ and obama’s ability to calm any infant he’s holding.

  30. Seraphina says:

Maybe, just maybe, TQ and PC thought: yeah, we may have to endure this but not the next in line. And to show you how much we dislike you, the young royals not need to be there.

Hmmmmm, brilliant. Makes it seem exactly like what has been said above: we gotta host but it ain’t warm and friendly. Duty to the crown.

  31. jen says:

confused by many things but mostly melania’s dress… is that a shadow across her torso?

  32. Amelie says:

As someone who worked a fancy gala not too long ago full of aristocrats (the Guest of Honor was the Aga Khan and you may have never heard of him but he’s a filthy rich and powerful man), the younger royals avoiding interacting with any of the Trumps was meticulously planned. That was definitely not an accident. I’m not sure if Harry hanging back during the visit of the Royal Collection was planned but I think it was. I don’t think he would have done that without his grandmother’s approval. Andrew took over for him so he would not have to be photographed extensively with Jared and Ivanka. Nobody really cares about Andrew so Ivanka wasn’t about to post him all over her Instagram. Trump may not have realized he was brilliantly managed and restricted by the royal family but that’s fine. They give him a taste of what he wants (a meeting with the Queen and Charles and a fancy dinner) and he’s happy without realizing just how restricted his visit was.

    • NightOwl says:

Amelie, I love your commentary and insights on this.

The photos I’ve seen mostly show Trump unsmiling. Do you suppose he was unhappy/realizing he was being snubbed, or otherwise? (I really want him to feel some despair and shame but it’s probably a lost cause.)

  33. blunt talker says:

The Trumps got micromanaged and didn’t know it until the second day. They got outplayed by Charles and the Queen. This state dinner was in the planning stage for almost a year. It took 6 months to plan the banquet on Monday. The stuck on stupids want to say the royals did not k now what was happening in regards to the younger royals. They executed it in low key fashion. The senior royals did not want the younger royals images used for political purposes in the up coming usa elections. The Trumps do not work in some charities that the royals do. Do you see them talking about helping with aids in the world body.(like Africa) Can you see them picking up a child born with aids and giving that child comfort? Please people put on the thinking caps-the royals are looking out for the things they work with and care about. You can take that to the bank.

  34. Casey20 says:

There is no doubt that the Trump Children expected to meet with the young Royals. Trump said it himself….His children would be meeting with the young royals to have a next generation discussion. I believe the Royal Family communicated to the WH this would not happened. Either Trump got the message and chose to ignore it or he wasn’t told. The Trumps are the type of people that ignore the rules so I believe they felt they would make it happened regardless. The Royals prove to be a force that the Trumps probably didn’t expect. They even surprised me. It was great to see to see this coordinated approach by the RF. But it also speaks to the fact that the RF work together as a unit, there’s no mistaking that.
Having said that it must be stated that Harry was once again treated terribly by the British Media. In particular by Emily Andrews. She is the first person that wrote an article about Harry fuming in a corner refusing to meet Trump because of Meghan. Yet she said nothing about William. It’s another example of how the 6th inline who will never be King (as we are reminded daily) should do something that the one we are told is the future King (preparing to be King) isn’t expected to do. This double standard must be called out. Yes we all despise Trump and didn’t want any young Royals to meet with him and his family but we must recognize the narrative that was coming from the British Media. The repeated attacks on the Sussex’s must be called out! Since the birth of his child Harry has been labeled as a father that neglects his wife and child by the media. Never once was William given this label. We have been told that the reason Meghan/Harry are a target is because Meghan is a divorcee, Actress and American. Yet we watch the British Press show complete adulation toward Trump…an American, divorcee twice, wannabee celebrity that married a nude model. A man that stated he grabbed women by the puss*. A man that cheated on two of his wives. A man that cheated on Melania with two women, one a playboy model the other a porn star (one of which while she was at home nursing a newborn). A man that took the playboy model to his home that he shared with his wife Melania. This scum was paraded through the streets of London with high honor and cheered by the very same people who can only find fault with Meghan. So why do they hate Meghan…… tell the truth!!!

    • Tina says:

Ah, Casey, back to our old tricks I see. Trump was not “paraded through the streets of London” with high honour, he was kept as far from the British public as possible. We protested him, we didn’t cheer him. And even the UK press didn’t give him “complete adulation,” they reported all of the stupid things he said accurately.

      • BayTampaBay says:

Tina, Thanks for all your hard work protesting the disgusting individual.

      • Tina says:

Thanks Bay. We’re a basket case of a country in a lot of ways, but at least only 21% of us support Trump.

    • Leena says:

      @ casey and breathe.

    • sabrina says:

Casey, didn’t he cheat on all three of his wives?

    • Casey20 says:

Tina: My focus really was on the British Media and their treatment of Trump vs. Meghan. Also the Brits who claim to dislike Meghan because of the things I listed but still find love for Trump. No disrespect to you and sorry if you read it that way.
Leena: I have soooo much more on Trump. I’m frustrated because I have been boycotting reading anything about him but his visit to the UK just reminded me of why I despise this man so much. He’s an embarrassment to the US.

    • mercury says:

i dont detect any lies in what Casey has said

  35. Carolind says:

There is no reason for William, Harry etc to have much to do with Trump. On state visits years ago it was very much the Queen handling everything, with Charles although heir in a minor role. Charles only has so much prominence now because HMEIi is so old and Philip is retired. William and Kate didn’t even do state banquets until a few years ago. Andrew probably accompanied Trump to a couple of things such as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, because Andrew has done active service and also because he is a golf fanatic. No reason for the younger royals to accompany Trump’s children. They are not on a par.

    • Casey20 says:

Suggest you google the Obama’s visit William/Kate at their KP Apartment. So they have gone beyond for a POTUS. Also remember they met the Obama’s after their wedding. So I would say they avoided Trump….BIGLY!

  36. T not for Trump says:

Hi everyone, been reading you all for years and yep, adore you all. Thank you Kaiser and CB for following this Trump Kushner debacle. I grew up around the Trumps, and still do have places next to them. Simply put, they ARE really that awful. Let’s get back the Senate, vote BLUE and end this nightmare already! LOVE. (and apologies, if couple mistakes logging in :-)

  37. JanetFerber says:

I’m here to say that Trump looks really pasty and grossly overweight. I wonder if his “strenuous” job (wink, wink) is aging him as it does the more conscientious presidents (Obama aged, Bush 2 did not). Or is it lack of sleep from tweeting jags and endless Burger King?

    • Casey20 says:

He has become the 400 lbs. guy lying in bed tweeting he talked about in the Republican Primary.
