Kim Kardashian did a Vogue video revealing her fitting process for the Met Gala

Kanye West, Kim Kardashian West at arriv...

I didn’t really get how Kim Kardashian’s Thierry Mugler “wet look” dress really fit with the “camp” theme of the Met Gala. It didn’t look campy, although tackiness clings to all things Kardashian, so maybe that’s how she fit the theme. One of the craziest parts of Kim’s Met Gala look was the fact that her waist looked soooo tiny. Improbably tiny. Crazy-amount-of-lipo tiny. As it turns out, she had a custom made nude corset by French corsetier Mr. Pearl for the look, and she detailed the journey for Vogue:

She says to camera, directing her comments at Anna Wintour: “Okay, so Anna, if I don’t sit down for dinner, now you know why. I’ll be walking around mingling, talking, but I cannot hardly sit. I can only like, half sit.” I actually did find the fitting of the corset very interesting – she really is cinched in there, and it looks like she should barely even be able to breathe. I can’t even imagine – I used to play around with corsets and I always felt like I was doing damage to my internal organs. That’s what this looks like – like Kim had some of her organs taken out so she could fit in this dress.

It’s not on theme and it’s not comfortable, but they achieved what they wanted. The execution of design is excellent.

    • Char says:

This dress is so well executed and honestly, no one but Kim would pull it off.

    • SK says:

See, I think it is way on theme – just in a more thoughtful, interesting, and creative way than most of the outfits were. It is a take on her recent Vogue cover (this month’s) and also on Raquel Welch in that movie. It is most definitely an outfit that lives in inverted commas and has a sense of humour and tongue-in-cheek attitude. It is extra and uses lots of manmade materials (silicon etc.). Thierry Mugler has always been ultra camp and this outfit is no different. Seriously check out his Instagram which has videos of past shows – camp to the max! Additionally, the construction and design are incredible and are being lauded as such by fashion sites. So clever! I like it and I love that she committed to it. To me it was a stand-out.

      • Caroline says:

I agree. I am no Kimmy fan but I think this is stunning. Imagine if you saw this on a Queen like Violet Chachki. I wish they’d camped up the make up more but I think it is just stunning!

  2. Hunter says:

The fry is just too much. I can’t make it through the whole video.

  3. stephanie says:

Why do the pictures view so weird and stretched out on my browser?

  4. KatieBo says:

It’s a wink to her May Vogue cover. The cover girl going as her cover is definitely Camp.

  5. Mgsota says:

I don’t know if it’s “Camp” but I have to say her whole look was awesome. It really did look like she just got out of the water, droplets hanging off the dress. The fabric, her hair, it was cool. But I don’t see the point of the ridiculously tiny waist.

  6. Ashipper says:

I know everything about her is super annoying but I have to say, I think the way the beading makes it look like water is dripping off her is really cool. I wouldn’t call this look camp though.

  7. JennyJenny says:

I still believe there’s a possibility that some of her ribs have been removed.

  8. ME says:

Can someone explain Kanye’s outfit. I’d love to hear him explain how his outfit is camp. Also, did Kim purposely not spray tan her arms? Maybe because it would rub off on her “law school” notes lol.

    • Anastasia says:

In one video she said he said he was going to “let her shine” and that’s why he dressed down, but couldn’t he have worn a simple suit? As I said on Twitter, it looked as if he was just running out to the store real quick.

Also that dress looks like it is literally made of saran wrap.

    • AnnaKist says:

Mmm… he thought the theme was “camping”…? I can see Kim in an outfit like this for that. Ok, she’d be glamping. While the frock is an achievement, her waist is ridiculous and pointless, not to mention that it just looks as if she’s being cut in half by an extremely tight leather strap rather than shaped by a corset. A corset I get, but this just looks weird.

    • SK says:

His outfit is awful. He used to try! His manus x machina look was awesome!

The dress has fine netting sleeves that the “water droplets” hang off and they hook over her index fingers. So with the reflection of that fabric her arms look a lighter colour than the rest of her.

  9. Cee says:

I wore a corseted dress for my 15th birthday party and swore to never do so again. It’s uncomfortable, you can’t sit down and dancing is not as fun as it should be.

    She can barely WALK.

  10. feralchild says:

The fit, the look of droplets of water, the commitment Kim made are all divine but I don’t know if I’m getting camp from it

I think it’s the best she’s ever looked cohesively

  11. Seraphina says:

Maybe it’s because I’m getting over a cold, but I realized the dress does make it look like water is falling off her. And yes, I agree she may have googled damp and not camp. But it is pretty well executed now that my hazy has been lifted

  12. Nev says:

Her BODY is camp. I think that maybe that was her point. The dress and corset showcased the body.

  13. Karen2 says:

Except that it looks a lot like Jennifer Hudsons much more budget billboard outfit. & JHud looks a lot happier & lovely. Sometimes Kim just overstyles. Ye looked nice for a change tho. Obviously not camp.

    • SK says:

I disagree, it absolutely meets the definition of camp as described in Sontag’s essay. It is humourous (a take of her wet beige look on the cover of this month’s Vogue), it is clever, it is tongue-in-cheek, it is extra, it involves manmade materials, it lives within quotation marks. Tick, tick, tick. Camp is pretty broad – it’s not just Elton John and Cher. Thierry Mugler is one of the kings of camp and if this is his definition then, hell yeah, it’s camp!

  14. Justme says:

What I love is that Kanye is actually wearing a Dickies Eisenhower jacket (see here: https://www.dickies.com/outerwear/unlined-eisenhower-jacket/JT75.html?dwvar_JT75_color=CH#start=1 ) I’d bet you anything those are Dickies pants as well. He sort of looks as though he is going camping, rather than “camp”

  15. Snowslow says:

I don’t understand why the aesthetic of the K’s is always to fight their bodies. In a painful way. Also she makes it sound like she’s Kanye’s doll. But whatever.

That said I think that minus the tiny waist and the horrible make-up the dress was interesting.

  16. prissa says:

I couldn’t imagine being surrounded with such sycophants. Just constantly gassing your head up about how great you are and beautiful and everything about you is so avant garde. UGH
The fakery is just off the charts.

  17. Originaltessa says:

I think she looks cute in the video with half the makeup and her hair pulled up loosely. She’s so pretty, but sometimes all the smoke and mirrors makes you forget.

  18. BeanieBean says:

She looks so young & pretty–even with the obviously fake lips–without makeup.

  19. duchess of hazard says:

I like these videos. It’s lovely to see the thought and craft that goes into these designs. I can see why Anna likes Ms Kardashian West. Kim comes across as charming with wicked soft skills.

  20. Some chick says:

Seems to me like someone got jelly of Cardi’s star turn in Mugler vintage, and is trying to get in on some of that shine.

Mugler is awesome and amazing. I’m not surprised to see Kim hire them, and I don’t want to judge them for dressing her.

It’s head and shoulders above the glovey upholstery thing that Kanye’s (rumored) French boyfy foisted on her that other time!

And BOTH of those lewks were head and shoulders above the Not Even Trying I’m Just A Toff column dresses and boring tuxes.

    Joan Collins certainly topped this!

    • SK says:

Mugler is amazing!! His Instagram is a rabbit hole worth falling down. Videos of his shows that were just quirky, amazing works of art. So good!

To be fair, Kim has been wearing a lot of vintage Mugler of late – even prior to Cardi’s fabulous turn. I think this collaboration was long on the cards.

I am so pleased with the fashion this year. People really went for it! Not as many Boring Betty’s and Brads as usual!

  21. Anilehcim says:

Funny how her deep adoration of Mugler only came about when Cardi wore it first. Just wondering if Kim has an original thought in her head.

Her fake baby hairs are so stupid. She had her hair lasered off. That’s a really stupid length to go to to try to dabble in someone else’s culture bc you so desperately wanna be “down”

    • SK says:

Nah, KKW has been wearing vintage Mugler pieces all year – since before Cardi’s Star turn. Some of those looks were covered here – she really can’t pull a lot of his stuff off! And some stuff looks almost pornographic on her. Think some of the crazy jumpsuits and the dress that only had thin bands covering her nips.

Diet Prada did a whole series about Kim wearing vintage Mugler and Versace pieces (most of them work by Naomi Campbell in the past!) and Fashion Nova releasing rip-off versions a day later. They’ve heavily inferred that Kim has a dodgy deal with Fashion Nova and let’s them know in advance what she’ll be wearing so they have the copies ready to go.

I also follow Mugler on insta and he and Kim have hung out a lot. She went to his retrospective exhibition earlier this year as one of his special guests.

  22. zazie says:

“I trust them with all my soul“. She’s pathetic.

  23. Ana says:

I feel much better ~and skinnier~ now that I know it takes three grown men to stuff kimmy in that dress.

    • SK says:

Right?? All that dieting and plastic surgery and exercise and endless beauty treatments… sounds exhausting and mega expensive!! You have to invest a lot into looking this way, and then you still need three men to stuff you in, a special way to pee, and a stool and pole to hang onto instead of seats! Not for us normal folks. Love the lewk but would never go any of this to achieve it 😂🙈

  24. Luci says:

She ( and JLo), went through all of that trouble, like they always do, to show us their naked bodies, and get all of the attention. But, they failed miserably; as so many of the other stars and their beautifully-creative camp outfits out-shined them one-hundred times over.

    • Yes Doubtful says:

I agree, they were more concerned with showing off their figures instead of following the theme.

  25. Case says:

This look is really stunning to me. I don’t think it fit the theme but it was just fascinating to look at.
