Brie Larson & Scarlett Johansson react to fan tattoos: ‘That looks like Bride of Chucky’

Scarlett Johansson and Brie Larson appeared on Ellen DeGeneres and to be perfectly frank, the whole thing was a delight. Not only do they have a great rapport, they’re incredibly supportive of each other. Brie seems to appreciate that Scarlett is an Original Avenger and Scarlett clapped and whooped when Ellen announced Captain Marvel made $1 billion, without once making a comment about where is her g-d stand-alone film.

Ellen mentioned the OA’s tattoo and that led to a discussion of Marvel fans getting tattoos of both Black Widow and Captain Marvel. Brie seemed floored at the notion that her face appeared on other people, which I imagine would be very weird. Ellen posted some photos of the tattoos and some were very good work while some were, well, let’s just say – not.

Fans have tattoos of all of you. There’s some crazy tattoos that fans have gotten. Like, the entire back

SJ: I’ve seen some of them

BL: The entire back? What?! I’m on someone’s back

SJ: That looks like The Bride of Chucky, remember that one?

BL: I mean, I feel a new sense of pressure, like as a person, to not be a giant embarrassment to someone. Because that’s going to be a lot of work to cover up

I love the progression of this discussion more than anything. It went from Oh Yikes to Hawt! to a moral obligation to live a munificent life so someone else doesn’t regret their 2019 decision for body art. If you watched the clip, Ellen suggested that maybe if Brie messed up, the person could alter their tattoo into another actress who looked like her. To which Brie offered up Angelina Jolie as Maleficent and Ellen’s reaction is precious.

Prior to the tattoos, the ladies talked about their first kisses. Brie could not remember if hers was on screen or real life. Brie thinks this might speak to how unremarkable the kiss was. But it also could be Brie’s memory because when Ellen asked when she and Scarlett met, she couldn’t remember that properly either:

Where did you meet and how long have you known each other? I want to hear the whole story

SJ: You don’t remember how me met? How did we meet?

BL: At dinner

SJ: No!

BL: Yes we did!

SJ: Clearly it made an impression on me but somebody else didn’t care

BL: We had dinner on New Year’s Eve

SJ: We worked together

BL: Oh my God! It’s true.

Apparently, they made Don Jon together, but Brie tried to spin it as she was just a nobody and didn’t think Scarlett would remember her. Sure Jan. Still it was a nice save and clearly ScarJo wasn’t bothered.

Following their segment, they played a game against Ellen and tWitch. The best part is Brie going through each member of One Direction’s names trying to come up with The Cambridges’ kids names:

Takeaway: Always get on tWitch’s team for trivia. I am way behind on my Avengers promo interviews. I promise to catch up, though. Usually my favorite promo circuit duo are the Chrises (Hemsworth and Evans) but Brie and ScarJo might take their place this go-round.

I can’t decide whose Infinity Gaunlet jewelry I like better, ScarJo’s or Brie’s. Can I have both?

The One Direction thing was super cute. I didn’t think I would enjoy this interview as much as I did. These ladies really do interview well together and it seems like they actually like each other as well, which is cool

Those are all really good tattoos. Can’t stand either of these women.

WHY THE HECK does Brie stand so weirdly on red carpets??!! This is the third one I’ve noticed. It’s killing me. Her posture is so strangely forced and uncomfortable looking, like she’s pushing her shoulders forward and one of them down… it just makes my back hurt

I don’t like it when interviewers ask celebrities to react to tattoos and fan art and the like. It’s played for laughs and the actors joke about how weird it is, but like…obviously someone is a huge fan of them to get those tattoos. And you’re making fun of them for it? Sure, it’s not the kind of tattoo most of us would get, but I think it’s so mean-spirited to make fun of fans who clearly adore them.

I agree! I don’t particularly like many of the tattoos shown but celebrities laughing at them seems to be punching down a bit.

“Brie tried to spin it as she was just a nobody and didn’t think Scarlett would remember her. Sure Jan.”

Larson has been saying stuff like this for years since promoting Room, pretending to be a nobody with no money up until right before Room / Captain Marvel although she’s been working steadily since her preteens.

She had a starring role in a Disney movie, a series regular gig for 3 seasons of a TV series and substantial roles in movies like 21 Jump Street and Scott Pilgrim. She even tried her hand at teen pop stardom. I find the false narrartive and half-truths she presents as irritating.

I don’t think Brie deserves that backlash she has gotten for some of her comments, but I also can’t bring myself to really like her. She’s very…odd. She comes across as uppity, sarcastic, and a bit aggressive, but also tries to pass herself off as a humble no-name who suddenly became famous. She’s been a working actress/singer for a very long time.

I always thought ScarJo was similarly uppity and sarcastic, lol, but she seemed nice in this interview.

Here is place that supposedly breaks down her wealth up to 2016 when she won the Oscar. When you factor agent and manager fees, along with daily living expenses her claims might have some validity.

      • Xi Tang says:

Yeah I don’t think she’s lying in particular. Yes she was working but nothing she’s done before Room was mainstream or particularly a box office smash. And no one went to see 21 jump street because of her, lets be real.

I find the constant criticism towards her to be very…odd. I for one am glad that there’s more Brie coverage.

    • MissM says:

I only noticed her attitude during this press tour. The entire cast is so chill and fun loving and then there is Brie who frankly seems arrogant and like she doesnt belong. Shes the adult version of the girl who would remind the teacher about the homework assignment.

      • Case says:

Same, MissM. I thought she seemed nice before but on this recent press tour she sticks out as being stuck up and humorless. Maybe she’s awkward/has anxiety and her new fame is causing her to act different? Either that or fame has gone to her head.

    • Seán says:

I should say that I don’t think she deserves the hate or abuse she’s getting. I think she was great as Captain Marvel and I like the causes she stands for.

But she presents herself as a bit part struggling actress who nearly had to pack it in up until Room even though many of her roles were quite substantial and she had worked pretty steadily since being a child. She also talked about losing out on the United States of Tara role and how devastating that was for her in the THR Actress Roundtable a few years back but she failed to mention that she was actually cast in that role in the end.

I know her previous work wasn’t setting the box office afire and I know she wouldn’t have been necessarily wealthy but I think she tries too hard to present herself as an underdog so she seems more deep.

ScarJo comes off so funny and relaxed and at ease here

Ill give Brie a pass bc her fame arc has been way more crazy
she is still suffering from imposter syndrome
Scarjo has had YEARS upon YEARS to stretch and enjoy her fame and accolades

I can not get ellentube videos to play, it’s so annoying

  8. serena says:

Honestly they were so cute together! Wouldn’t mind seeing more press videos of them.
