Sarah Hyland and more celebrities are getting shaggy bobs, will you?

Shagadocious bro

It seems to me like Sarah Hyland doesn’t usually venture too far out when it comes to hair. That’s likely a stipulation of her Modern Family contract. But Sarah just posted a pic of herself with a brand new shag haircut. It’s new to her, of course, because the shag itself is a throwback. I love this on her. I think it frames her face beautifully. It’s worth mentioning that Sarah’s TV mom, Julie Bowen, has had a shaggy bob for years:

Apparently, the Shag is one of the top trends in hair for 2019 and celebrities are showing up for it everywhere. Milla Jovovich posted a pic of herself with a new a mullet-like shag:

For the record, of the shag varieties, Milla’s is not one of my favorites, although I recognize she looks far better in it than I would. Representing the soft, long-layered shag team is Julianne Hough who grew her bob out enough to get this look:

Julianne looks crazy-pretty in that shot, doesn’t she? Her makeup is fantastic but that cut is really good on her. Of course, one of the greatest shag supporters, since time immemorial, is Lisa Rinna:

Will you do it? I gotta say, I love this. I love a good chunky haircut and my mom wouldn’t let me have a shag as a kid so I’m doing it now. And we know what the return of the shag means: *whispers so Kaiser can’t hear me* bangs.

I swear, if I lined all those pics above together it would look like The Runaways tribute band. Only, of course, the original Runaway, Joan Jett, is still sporting her own signature ‘do so might as well let her front the band again:

Maybe it is the early hour (4:19 AM Seattle time), but I initially read that as that they’re all getting shaggy boobs and well, confused doesn’t even begin to cover it.

A shaggy bob is almost as unforgiving as a pixie cut and like it, only a few people suit to it really well. Joan Jett gets grandfathered (grandmothered?) in because she’s been rocking that style most of her life.

  2. Erinn says:

I really don’t like most shaggy hairstyles. They can look GREAT on some people, but it really depends on the texture/thickness of your hair. I just find on most people it’s such a dated look.

To me it’s a tiring look. It’s great for a few days, for an event or party, but I can’t imagine wearing it day in and day out. I do really like Julianne’s above but that just looks like a bob with some extra styling.

And Milla can rock absolutely anything so that one doesn’t count!

      • Erinn says:

I agree. Julianne’s is pretty, but it’s just a fluffed up bob with some minor layers that has been blowdried to have more of a big wave to it. Milla looks good too – but on anyone else I wouldn’t really like it.

      • jan90067 says:

I had a shag in the 70′s. I was lucky to have thick hair, so I could wear it w/out looking like a plucked chicken, but damn, the waves/curl in my hair made it SO HARD to manage! I’m not talking “waves” like JH has above, but big enough waves to make you seasick! I spent SO MUCH TIME blowdrying to get it to lay “right”…aacckk! I looked pretty good in bangs, but they had to lay straight, with just the *slightest* bend at the top, with them longer on the sides (GOD FORBID you had bangs cut too straight across! Or too short!). Also, you really need much straighter hair to do it right.

Now, my hair IS much thinner and straighter (due to age and meds), but I’d look like a wet cat/dog with all the layers thinning it out more! lol.

I’ll stick to my jaw length bob (no bangs…for now lol).

    • Bailie says:

@ Erin – Yes, not every hair style looks good on everybody. Bone structure has a lot to do with it and also the texture and quality of the hair. Of course it’s also important to consider how much is one willing to spend on styling their hair time and money wise too.
My coworker was telling me that before she makes a major hair change, she has a rule that she has to have 3 consultations with hair stylists, one with her regular hairstylist that knows her well and two strangers.

    • Carmen says:

I hate them. They look like a five year old did a number on the hair with a weed whacker.

  3. Lucy2 says:

Bob yes, shag no! The shag doesn’t looks good on most people, and I don’t like it on Sarah.

    • minx says:

Yes, I love most bobs. Shags, no.

      • London says:

Yes, I love my ” to the collarbone long bob “.
It’s very easy to style and I can still wear it up or down or in a half up-do, which is my favorite style.
Neither too short or too long.

  4. Dina says:

I think Sarah’s hair usually looks like that? She wears extensions on the show. I like it either way!

  5. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I’ve always had shag. Multi-layers, long, no bangs. My hair was always so dang thick, the massive layering was needed to tame the lion. Now my hair has thinned so much, the lion is a wet Persian lol.

    • jan90067 says:

LOLOL. I said basically the same thing. I always had SUCH thick hair I was getting it thinned out at least 3 times a year. Now (due to age/meds) my hair is about 1/4 as thick as it was, and boy, do I miss it!

For a “visual”: My ponytail used to be as thick as my wrist; I could barely get a scrunchy or a covered rubber band around twice (I had to reeeeally pull it). Now, it’s about the width of two fingers pressed together lol. How time changes things! 😊

  6. teehee says:

I think you need to fully accessorize the look otherwise its just “unstyled” or messy / or at worst, “badly cut”. So… it seems high maintenance to me.

  7. Alexandria says:

    So, PMK included?

  8. Eliza says:

I donated hair in late fall and it was cut into a bob basically (longer in front style bc i wanted to keep length and the ponytail-donation cut makes it shorter in back). I do miss my long hair because I feel like it’s a mom cut – I got it post partum. Now it’s growing in, it’s a shaggy lob, still shorter in back, but I didn’t have layers in the original cut but now it does, because i guess my hair grows at different speeds. I’ve been very self conscious about it being a bit different of a look…

Long story short – I’m accidently on trend.
[No bangs though, they're not my friend]

  9. Anon33 says:

Nope, just like I won’t wear neon, mom jeans, or “updated” fanny packs. All still ugly as hell.

  10. Fhmom says:

Too Jane Fonda in Klute. No thanks.

    • BeanieBean says:

Funny you should say that. I wore my hair long until mid-high when I told the hairdresser I wanted a Jane Fonda in Klute haircut. Looked good on my 14 YO self!

  11. Pandy says:

Having worn a shag in the 70s, I will stick with my lob, thanks.

  12. styla says:

Ok this is what my hair does naturally. And its hideous and I live for my extensions. I am dumbfounded anyone would do this willingly.

  13. Lizzie says:

i had a shaggy bob last year and it looked amazing but it is such a deceiving cut. to get it to look unstyled you have to use a lot of product and spend some time on it – otherwise it looks like a mullet. the highs are high and the lows are low with a cut like that. similar to a short cut.

  14. Basi says:

I hope so! And I hope the regular folks follow suit. I am so sick of the long long hair trend. I was just with my 19 yo niece for a week and the long long hair is so gross and unattractive.

    • LoveBug says:

      @ Basi :
THIS, that very, very, very long, long, long REAL HOUSEWIVES
fake as heck hair extension look will hopefully go away soon, but not soon enough.
I actually have no issue with hair extensions, but when FAKE screams FAKE, I can’t stand it.
At least make some effort, so it doesn’t look so unrealistic, like ERICA from REAL HOUSEWIVES
OF BEVERLY HILLS. Her long fake ugly blond color hair is so incredibly awful. Her hair color is bad enough without the fake extension look.
My girlfriend just got a great haircut, the same one Kristen Doute from VanderPump Rules has and she looks really wonderful.
I’ve seen some excellent shaggy bob haircuts, but like bangs and all other hairstyles, it has to complement the bone structure of the person and the type of hair someone has should be considered and how much time are they ready to spend on styling.

      • Kitten says:

I think REAL long hair can be beautiful but extensions are so 2013. I don’t understand why women are still using them.

      • BeanieBean says:

Gross, right? And all those ‘real’ housewives are always playing with their long fake hair. That’s what grosses me out, all that constant touching, and flipping, and smoothing. Gah!

    • Eden75 says:

Some of us have really really long hair and love it.

Granted, mine isn’t extensions, it’s the real deal.

  15. brutalethyl says:

Sorry ladies but nobody’s ever going to wear a shag like David Cassidy ;)

  16. Bettyrose says:

Holy 80s! That hair makes me wanna squeeze into some acid washed jeans.

  17. Bluedreams says:

I have to comment on this because my hairdresser gave me a shaggy bob recently when I was trying to grow out a choppy bob and it’s horrendous! I’d urge anymore who wants to do this, Don’t! Step away! It’s crazy hard to style and my bangs kept curling under and over. Bad. It’s a great idea for a celeb who can pay someone to regularly style their hair but no no no currently patiently waiting for mine to grow out

  18. BANANIE says:

Julie Bowen doesn’t have a shaggy bob on Modern Family. She has a really cute lob. It’s not shaggy at all.

  19. KidV says:

I’m going to get the Carol Brady shag.

  20. Katherine says:

Omg don’t seduce me. Had this a few years back, loved it for a week. Still want it back. I just don’t think it works for me or smth…

  21. Usedtobe says:

I was all about the shag as a kid in the 80′s and then again in the late 90′s, early 2000′s when hair wax was a thing.
And I must say I’m loving Sarah’s hair to the point that in 2 weeks I get my hair done and I may just have to bring that photo!

  22. Kay says:

I wish I could participate in this trend but my hairstylist won’t let me, my hair is super fine and a shag cut won’t have the look without a ton of styling which she knows I am too lazy to do every day

    • LoveBug says:

Hey Kay, maybe consider the cut Kristen Doute from VanderPump Rules has.
My girlfriend just got Kristen’s cut last week.
It sounds like you have of her type of super fine hair, she says it’s very easy to style and it looks great.

    • Lalaland says:

Kay – try to take BIOSIL and Advanced B Complex, it helped to thicken my hair.
You are right about layers in very fine hair, it takes away the little volume we barely have.

  23. Ms Petit says:

I’m growing out a very short hairstyle and it’s unintentionally turning into a shag cut.

@Hecate, if you haven’t had bangs in awhile, you should probably make sure you REALLY want them! They’re always in my eyes but not long enough to pull back into a cute clip. Most of the time I’m walking around the house with the bangs gathered in a rainbow loom rubber band looking like a I just sprouted a baby unicorn horn.

  24. kim says:

A shorter style ALWAYS trendy in the spring, while beach waves is ALWAYS trendy in the summer. The shag boob look isn’t THAT retro, ladies have been growing out their pixie and early 90s cuts for a few years now. These bobbs seem like an annual event, and is only getting a spotlight this year because, why not?

  25. Elizabeth Rose says:

OMG. I thought that the heading said that Sarah wanted saggy boobs when in fact it said shaggy bobs. Initially I was like, “is this a new trend now? Women preemptively giving mother nature the finger and choosing saggy boobs.” Lol.

  26. Suzieq359 says:

I thought it was saggy boobs and thought leave that poor girl alone, she’s had 2 kidney transplants! Then I saw she mentioned and thought OK she’s fine with the saggy boobs talk, then I started reading the article, duh!

And I thought Milla J was Taylot Swift. Looks like that new cover Tay did.

    • Rebecca says:

That’s what I read at first. I thought it was just me. I’m glad I read the title twice. 😊

  27. raincoaster says:

I got a shag earlier this year, and I love it. I don’t need any product to look great, but a little of the right product makes it look FABULOUS. I call this particular version “The Aragorn.”

  28. Summer says:

I love long bobs, just a bit past my collarbone.
Not too long to be a hassle to handle and not too short to be stuck with the same hair style every single day.
I can easily have an up – do, half up – do or a ponytail.
Few highlights twice a year and certified organic jojoba oil treatment at home once every 3 months.
    Easy.
