Winona Ryder is pretty convinced that she for-real married Keanu Reeves in the ’90s

Here are some photos of Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves at the photocall for their new film, Destination Wedding. It’s a romantic comedy about two somewhat terrible single people who are forced to spend time together at a destination wedding. Seeing Keanu and Winona work together again after all these years makes my ‘90s-Girl heart sing, I won’t lie. I think they still look great and they both seem impossibly cool. Something else that makes my heart sing? Winona is pretty convinced that she and Keanu are actually married, and have been married since the ‘90s. For good reason.

Winona Ryder and Keanu Reeves might be married…in Romania. While promoting their upcoming rom-com Destination Wedding, Ryder revealed to EW that their movie love might extend off screen because she’s not entirely sure the pair didn’t have a real wedding back in 1992 while filming Bram Stoker’s Dracula.

Musing about her feelings on weddings alongside Reeves, Ryder told EW, “We actually got married in Dracula. No, I swear to god I think we’re married in real life. In that scene, Francis [Ford Coppola] used a real Romanian priest. We shot the master and he did the whole thing. So I think we’re married.”

Reeves took the news in stride and joked, “It’s lovely to see you again.” But Ryder reminded him that they went through the entire ceremony and said their “I dos.” When Reeves asked, “We said yes?” Ryder responded, “Don’t you remember that? It was on Valentine’s Day.” This left Reeves no choice but to conclude, “Oh my gosh, we’re married.”

[From EW]

It’s SO Keanu and Winona to not even realize that they actually got married in Romania. And of course it hasn’t come up since then, because they’re both famously unmarried peeps. Winona and Keanu have both been in serious relationships of course, but no one can accuse of them of bigamy because maybe they secretly knew they were married all along, and so they never married anyone else. No, I don’t think that’s actually how it works, of course. There probably was a somewhat legit church service, but surely there would be paperwork to sign and such? They’re only half-married and it’s not legal. Still… they should get married for real. I would love it.

Step away from him woman – Keanu is MY husband 😤

  2. Missy says:

Don’t you need to sign a marriage license and what not

    • FuefinaWG says:

Yes, you do. I know this because my niece was married 2 weeks ago and the officiant forgot to bring the license with him. They were married on a Saturday evening and there was a mad scramble on Sunday morning for the bride/groom/BM/MofH/Officiant to all meet at a designated location to sign the license before they left on their honeymoon.
I thought it was super funny. Mom and Dad, not so much.
Who even gets married these days?
I’m a firm believer in not getting married unless a partner is filthy rich. Then I would def get married and shop at Chanel all the time.

      • CairinaCat says:

Here you do sure, but in Romania in 92? that’s a whole other ballgame and they could really be married

  3. Maum says:

Would make for the most awesome real life rom-com!

They’re not legally married but they are in the eyes of the Orthodox church…

    • Mac says:

Coppola may or may not have used a real priest, but he definitely used real vampires. What else explains their lack of aging?

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I’m pretty sure the orthodox church requires the marriage be consummated before it’s final. So unless they hooked up during filming, I don’t think they’re married even in the eyes of the church. . . . But I don’t recall their statuses back then – did they hook up?

    • pottymouth pup says:

they were married as their characters, I don’t think this counts as really being married in the church

also, the Greek & Russian Orthodox churches don’t allow Jews to be part of a wedding party and requires both bride & groom to be Orthodox to perform a wedding ceremony – something I found out when my friend, who was converting to marry her husband, was told I had to be kicked out of the wedding party – she stopped her conversion & they married in her families church. The couple was also told that their marriage in the Lutheran church was not considered valid so she had to undergo conversion to baptize her first born child to avoid him being considered a bastard (and they had to back-tithe to the church to cover mandated tithes from their Lutheran wedding to boot). I doubt the Orthodox church in Romania is more liberal

  4. Spark says:

Not gonna lie, if I looked like her I would spend 99% of my day in front of a mirror.

    • Kitten says:

She looks so beautiful. I don’t know if she’s had work done but if she has, it is very subtle. Just a gorgeous woman.

  5. Andreea says:

Nah, in Romania the priests can’t legally marry people, only the civil servants can. So no, K & W are absolutely not married, but I agree it’s a cute story :)

  6. H says:

I would totally love it if they were married.

  7. Kitten says:

I kind of want them to be for real married.

Sigh. Keanu is so handsome and I love Winona’s look here.

    • Jegede says:

More than handsome, Keanu is a legitmately good dude.

      Take my word for it.

Another one whose actually kind and humble is – drum roll – …….. Ben Affleck!
(But I won’t go into that).

      • Kitten says:

Lols those are fighting words around here, Jegede!

Ben might have a messy personal life, but as a Bostonian, I’m familiar with his generosity. He filmed in my neighborhood and went out of his way to make the locals comfortable: holding meeting so we could be apprised of filimg schedule, parking restrictions etc, giving local townies parts in the film. I’ve never heard a bad story about him in terms of how he treats people in the service industry, his team, etc.

      • Dee Kay says:

Re: Ben Affleck: people can be more than one thing. I totally believe that Affleck is great in many aspects of his life. I think there’s a ton of evidence that he is, for example, an excellent friend, loyal and generous and kind and follows through on all his commitments, and sets aside time to hang out with the people that he deeply cares about. And I’m glad if he’s professional on set and a good producer who does community engagement well. We’ve never heard stories about him as a director that we heard about his younger brother as a producer. He seems to love his kids. BUT it seems like Affleck is messy messy with women and with drinking. He slept with his kids’ nannies and that shows bad parenting judgement, he was only thinking of himself not his kids (let alone his wife). Ppl can be very complex and have contradictory traits.

      • Veronica S. says:

A fair number of addicts I’ve known generally are pretty decent when they’re sober. The addiction periods are what bring the narcissistic qualities to the forefront because their entire life revolves around the addiction AND it provides an outlet for negative feelings that allows them ignore actually dealing with their problems head on.

  8. Digital Unicorn says:

Watch out Winona, Halle might come at ya if you believe the ‘PR’ romance from the set of John Wick 3.

Love both of these guys – neither seems to have aged. I recently saw Heathers on the big screen, that movie doesn’t age either.

  9. Maria_spain says:

mmm i think that the ones married are their character, the priest didnt say “do you KEANU ACCEPT bla bla bla bla”

ps: they should have done it for real thou

  10. Cait says:

Oh I love this story. It’s still the 90s, I never grew up, recent political history never occurred, and Keanu and Winona are married *squeal*!

  11. Laura says:

Winona Laura Ryder is one of the most beautiful women in the world 😍 I loved her in “Girl Interrupted” and will see her new movie 🎥

  12. Lightpurple says:

That’s not how it works, Winona, but it would be great if the two of you did marry.

  13. maggi says:

    Keanona 4EVAH

  14. Astrid says:

    Cute story

  15. Jerusha says:

He’s one of the few 80s/90s stars you don’t have to be embarrassed to fangirl over. A lovely man. Don’t blame Winona for holding on to that fantasy.

  16. Faithmobile says:

My 90’s teenage self is basking in the glory of these two reuniting. And my fellow Sonoma County gal Winona is rocking a Tom Waits t shirt whom I was super into in the 90’s and oughts. Little known fact Tom lives just 20 minutes away from Winona’s childhood home. NorCal realness!

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

Story goes as a teen a friend of Winona’s babysat Tom Waits kids. Winona went babysitting with her friend not knowing this and got the surprise of her life to meet him. He gave her a tour t-shirt as a gift for helping babysit.

    • ravynrobyn says:

      @ Faithmobile:

      I’m a NorCal real gal too 😘

  17. Maum says:

I wanted to be Winona in Reality Bites. I even crushed on Ethan Hawke in those days.

  18. Diane says:

Wynona is not just wrong, but really. In Romania it is actually quite a process to get married. You have to fill out all of the paperwork first in multiple copies and have all the forms, then wait 10 days, and have a civil ceremony. The Religious ceremony can only happen if you are married with all the document and paperwork filled out. It is step 8 in a long process. Wishful thinking on her part….even if her saying this is for the movie she’s a little cray cray ima

    • jessamine says:

I mean … I took this as tongue-in-cheek on her part and more about her teasing Keanu than than trying to be scandalous for publicity’s sake?

  19. Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

    Hahaha! Thanks for covering this.

What’s Keanu’s ethnic composition? I’m curious because he’s beautiful and ages well, like Lenny Kravitz.

Edit: Wikipedia said that he has some Asian in him, so that satisfies my curiosity about this beautiful man. <3

  20. toni says:

Does anyone know if Keanu’s sister is still alive? She was sick, had leukemia years ago.

  21. paddingtonjr says:

Squee! My 90s’ self is crying tears of joy. As much as I would love to have Keanu all to myself, if I have to share, I wouldn’t mind sharing him with Winona! They both look great and I’m looking forward to seeing their new movie.

  22. Dee Kay says:

They strike me as very different kinds of people who would be incompatible in real life, but I think the contrast in their personalities might make them screen gold! I hope so.

  23. Ellie71 says:

    Johnny Utah… Sigh!!!!

  24. launicaangelina says:

I love them. I was a teen in the 90s and they’re forever #PeakCool in my heart and mind.

  25. Maris says:

OMG Johnny Depp must be dying.

  26. serena says:

I’m more shocked about Keanu doing a romcom, but whatever if it has them in I’ll watch anything.
