Tom Cruise’s mysterious, monk-like existence covers the new issue of People

Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio back in their car on the set of 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'

I’m pretty sure EVERYBODY gets a weird vibe from Tom Cruise these days, so my weird vibe isn’t special or notable. But I am getting an especially weird vibe from him these days, for what it’s worth. Tom is still promoting Mission: Impossible – Fallout, and Mysterious Tom got the cover of this week’s People Magazine. There’s a “new interview” which consists of about four sentences, and then People just idly speculates on some stuff and then shuts down their own speculation, and that’s the cover story. It’s notable because for years now, Tom has managed to promote multiple movies without talking about his life at all – he shills hard, he travels constantly to promote his movies, but the man has not sat down for any kind of in-depth interview in the better part of a decade. Here are some highlights from People:

Tom loves what he does: “I’ve wanted to make movies since I was 4 years old. To be able to entertain an audience, that was my dream. I like to learn new things and push the skills I have to the next level. I don’t do anything halfway as a person.”

He’s become more private post-divorce, post-Katie Holmes: “He’s a mysterious figure in many ways,” says Fallout costar Simon Pegg. “People speculate about him and decide the truth about him. He doesn’t really do anything. He steps back from all that.”

He hasn’t been in a serious relationship in years: In recent years, Cruise has spent most of his time on movie sets, living in hotel rooms — chiefly in London, a city he fell in love with while making Legend in 1984. He has gone on dates, but hasn’t been in a serious relationship for the longest time in his adult life.

Where he lives: L.A. is no longer his home base: In 2016, Cruise sold his properties there, including his massive Beverly Hills compound, which fetched $39 million. He bought a penthouse apartment in Clearwater, Fla, just a block from the Church of Scientology’s international headquarters. A committed member of the controversial church since the ’80s, he’s close friends with its leader, David Miscavige, and family members including his son Connor, 23, have also moved to Clearwater. Cruise is finishing up renovations on the apartment, but he has already spent time there, and locals have spotted him strolling with Scientology staffers. “He’s very relaxed when he’s here,” says a local source.

Whether he’s close to his daughters: He’s also close with daughter Isabella, 25, who lives in London with her husband. As for speculation about his relationship with his youngest daughter, Suri, 12, who lives with Holmes in L.A. And New York City, neither star has discussed the situation publicly. “He loves all his children,” says a source. “And each of them has a right to their own story.”

[From People]

“…And each of them has a right to their own story.” I mean… that’s the best way to say it, I guess. Katie Holmes isn’t crying about how Suri never sees her dad. Katie Holmes wanted Tom out of her life and Suri’s life and that’s what happened. It’s less about Tom “abandoning” Suri and more about him respecting the fact that Katie wanted him the f–k out of her life, although that dovetailed nicely with the fact that Tom was probably told to cut off contact with Suri because Suri isn’t a Scientologist.

As for Tom’s mysterious life… obviously, he’s all-in with Scientology and he just prefers to hang out with Scientologists. It feels like he lives a monk-like existence, right? He just works constantly and spends time at his “church.” Very few meaningful personal relationships, no romantic entanglements. But my vibe is… that may change? Because it feels like maybe Miscavige is still trying to get Tom another wife?

    Scientology is evil.

    • Milla says:

And diabolical. He scares me, cannot watch his new or old movies without thinking about his crazy.

  2. TaniaOG says:

I think he should let it go. Stop with the arranged relationships. You do you Tom Cruise. Even if that is something we might not expect.

    • Vanessa says:

But I wonder if he even knows who he is anymore, or if there is a real Tom Cruise in there somewhere.

      • Neva_D says:

I think this all the time! Sometimes it seems like he takes his roles *too* seriously? Almost as though he prefers to live in the reality of the characters he plays instead of living in real life. In a way, I feel bad for him. All the Money and fame in the world, but he’s just seems so lonely and unfulfilled.

(but then I remember how evil scientology is, and all sympathy melts away…)

      • aenflex says:

Yes. Sometimes I’ll curl up and watch Legend, or Risky Business and think about what kind of person he was before he met Mimi Rogers, what kind of person is possibly left in there. He is such a good actor. But I don’t watch his films anymore, apart from old favorites.

    • Carrie1 says:

It sounds like that’s exactly what he is doing already, and good for him. That also saves any other woman from being taken advantage of so that’s also good. I’m glad Katie and Suri are away and out of that mess. Glad for Nicole Kidman too.

  3. Jenns says:

The Miscavige/Cruise relationship has always been bizarre. In some ways, I do feel some sympathy for Tom. After reading Going Clear, I came away thinking that Tom had the exact kind of personality that cult leaders thrive on. Miscavige knew that and took full advantage. I don’t think Miscavige wants Tom to have another wife right now, because I think he wants full control of him. Just my theory.

    • SJhere says:

Yup, I agree. I do feel a bit sad for him, he made his choice but seems to be trapped in that damned cult CoS. What in the world could they possibly have on him to keep him so very under control?
All the money in the world, more than he could ever spend…in his mid50′s, Leave those brainwashing asshats!

I do think he did love Nic and when he was with her, he wasn’t so off the wall batshit crazy.

And yes I agree that Katie needed to go scorched earth to get her and Suri away from CoS.

I have an Ex-H who hasn’t seen our child in over 15 years. This is no loss to her life. He chose not to use his visitation when she was very young, she has no memory of him. At 20 y/o she has many friends and family that care about her.

Remember Christian Bale said he based his character in American Pycho on Tom Cruise, saying “there is no one there behind that smile”

I think that TC is a very damaged person IRL, and CoS has used that to keep him, like many cults/churches they only want their members to be involved with others within the church.
I’ve lost a dear cousin and her children to a born again fundie church and she will not keep company with folks that don’t belong her church. I try to stay in touch but, she has been pretty much lost to her church.

  4. LaraK says:

Still believe Nicole is the love of his life, but he chose the church, and now he’s stuck.
    He just seems so brainwashed.

That said, I feel about 10% sorry for him, and 90% screw him – he made his choice.

    • Meg says:

Yeah, he loved Nicole. Katie was his mid-life crisis breakdown.

    • lucy2 says:

I lean towards screw him too, because he is profiting greatly off the slave labor of the cult.

I don’t doubt that he has struggles and a lot of unhappiness (most of the COS people seem deeply unhappy to me) but he knows what they do, and he stands by it.

    • Jambo says:

Totally. I knew someone who caught sight of them frolicking in the rain in their backyard at a Toronto rental they had while filming in the city, back in the day. There was obviously some real passion, which is interesting because there was a lot of “contract marriage” talk going on then. But there are quite a few non-media stories of it being a deep connection. Very sad!

  5. Snazzy says:

The new MI movie actually looks good. Too bad I can’t go see it in the theater because I don’t want my money funding scientology.

    • Rescue Cat says:

Good for you. I don’t get Fox because I don’t want my money funding climate change denial and all other manner of right-wing BS.

  6. Indiana Joanna says:

There is something so sad about this guy although I’m not going to waste any energy thinking about it too much. He’s wealthy, has a job he loves, and feels safe with the Scientologists, so I guess that’s plenty.

  7. RBC says:

If Nicole or Katie were to ever write a tell all about their relationship with Tom, it would be a best seller. But both are probably prohibited due to divorce agreement or want to maintain a relationship with their children.

    • Millenial says:

I would read that so fast. I’m hoping when they both get in their 70′s they totally stop giving a sh-t and start talking about what happened. It happens often enough with other older actresses who decide to start spilling some tea to sell a memoir or whatever.

My guess is if nothing else, their “friends” will start telling the details eventually.

  8. Redgrl says:

I’ve long stopped reading People. Their softball, cheerleading interviews with Cruise, Travolta and the Duggars give a dangerous normalizing platform to abusive cults.

    • Snap Happy says:

Me too. The way they kept giving covers to those Duggars after the whole brother abused the sister thing really pissed me off. I won’t see this movie. He is in a cult and is a deadbeat dad.

    • minx says:

Same. People prints any kind of public relations drivel. I was finished with them after the Duggars.

  9. adastraperaspera says:

Who knows what nuttery he’s up to there in Clearwater with the Xenu lovers. Miscavige makes Tom think he’s a god–for real. Tax churches to stop this kind of idiocy.

  10. Jane says:

“Katie Holmes isn’t crying about how Suri never sees her dad. Katie Holmes wanted Tom out of her life and Suri’s life and that’s what happened.”

    I find this so weird.

Katie has been so suspect to me ever since she happily claimed Nicole’s two oldest children called her ‘mom’.

So unless Tom is abusive (emotional, physical) to Suri, why wouldn’t a mother want her child to have a relationship with her father and again no mention on if Suri sees her brother and sister.

The whole thing is strange, strange.

    • Eleonor says:

Kate was involved in the cult, but after a while she understood and run away, it’s not strange for me.

    • Kitty says:

Yeah pretty sure Katie was brainwashed or some shit. And if Tom wants a relationship with Suri, he would have one. If my child’s father was like the number two in a cult, I would run as far and fast as possible

    • Millenial says:

Well, she probably saw that Nicole got cut off from her children due to the cult and realized that Suri could either have a relationship with her or her dad, but not both. So, she obviously chose to get her kid the heck outta there. I don’t find that strange at all.

    • jwoolman says:

If it were me, I would be glad to have Tom out of Suri’s life simply because otherwise, he is likely to try to draw the child into Scientology. That should be a very real fear. Best to have Tom and the Church write her off completely. He wasn’t actually around that much when they were married, so I think Suri was used to his very long absences.

When they escaped, Suri was getting to the age when Scientologists get pretty serious about auditing and such, and even have put children into billion year contracts and separated them from their parents. The prospect of intense brainwashing was very real. Tom did it to his older children with Nicole and they got to the point where they didn’t want contact with their mother. A witness to the auditing has related how they were turned against their mother this way.

  11. Muffy says:

He did sit with Nerdist for a podcast that was pretty interesting in 2014. Cruise has had such a long career that you can talk about it for an hour and not get into his personal life.

    • lucy2 says:

I still remember that one, he sounded like a programmed robot. Especially when he talked about how he loves movies, but couldn’t name one he actually loved.

  12. Meg says:

He didn’t give an interview to People. These quotes are taken from his Mission Impossible press tour. Remember when Jannifer Garner called out People? Good times.

  13. annie says:

will never forget when Tom and Katie separated, his son Connor posted a pic of his sister Bella and Tom on his instagram with the caption …”my family”. no mention of his little sister Suri, like she didn’t exist, they were her brother and sister, from the minute she came into the world.
suri is not part of their world, and they don’t deserve to be in her world.
i still remember the disgust i felt when i saw that instagram!

  14. Christin says:

Tom was on Fallon’s show this week, and I have to admit that his charm is still evident.

My personal take is similar to what a couple other posters have already said. He’s a bit sympathetic to me, simply because I think he’s been manipulated.

I guess as long as his movies pull in money, he’ll still be their number two. My concern would be once the money slows down, getting older, etc. Even the founder was shipped away once he became infirm.

    • Agreed on the charisma, I have never found him sexy in the slightest , even in the Top Gun days, but he does bring the charm when promoting.
Worth noting, if Tom Cruise can completely fly under the radar for decades, it can be done. Which also makes me skeptical of reports that he is estranged from Suri, it is easy to believe because he is so damn strange, but he and Katie are both on lock as far as discussing their personal lives.

      • Christin says:

Good point about how he’s managed to stay hidden for years. No daily or weekly pap strolls, no daily word on his movements, even when the divorce was such big news.

        It can be done.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Im not skeptical. He was forced to admit in a deposition for a journalist he sued that he hadn’t seen her in years.

      • Dont get me wrong, I am not promoting him as father of the year and the deposition did say he had seen her like 10 days total over a six month period not long after the great escape. He talks about being good on the phone and Skype so no, I don’t believe he is doing any of the parental heavy lifting.
He sued over headlines accusing abandonment and it was settled out of court.

My point is only that this guy is a ghost when he wants to be and we really know nothing about his personal life or relationship with Suri.

      • Mia4s says:

Sorry @TheTalkingEd, I don’t buy for a second he has a relationship with Suri. Not one photo. In SIX years?! I often complement stars on flying under the radar with kids, but the truth is even stars who do, like Cate Blanchett or Christian Bale (who never even confirmed his children’s names!), well, I can google a picture of them with their children in about two seconds. Recent pictures too.

Also given the poor publicity Cruise received (and the fact the Suri is photographed fairly often with her mother) don’t you think if he could he’d have one simple photo with her outside a restautant? At Disneyland? Hell, at the dentist? But nope, nothing. He has no relationship with his (alleged) biological daughter, I’m more sure than ever.

Oh and if he cut her off for Xenu? F**k you Tom.

      • minx says:

He used to give interviews all the time. I think the reason he has flown under the radar since his divorce is because he’s afraid a rogue reporter will ask “When did you last see your daughter?” There is no good way to spin that, no way to make him seem like a good guy, and I think he’s petrified of that.

    • Nic919 says:

He benefits from slave labour. He’s a modern day plantation owner so I will never financially support anything he does. And I can’t feel bad that he chose the church of slave labour over his child. He did this because of his ego. So it’s all his fault. He could quit tomorrow. Leah Remini did. Paul Haggis did. He doesn’t want to because his ego is more important than anything else. So eff him. Human lives are being abused because of his ego.

  15. TaraT3 says:

Legit question: Are there any *new* celebrity members of Scientology? I mean, I know in this age of tech they have a harder time recruiting members because their BS is exposed all over the place… But, once the OG celebrities of Scientology get too old to be useful to the church, there isn’t really anyone to replace them. I know everyone hopes for some big exposure piece that shuts down the church, but if Going Clear and Leah’s show haven’t even put a dent in them, maybe just time and having less notable members will? I vaguely remember reading that Co$ is super cash poor, but their assets keep them chugging along.

    • launicaangelina says:

I wonder the exact same things.

    • Jane says:

I think IF CoS recrutes new celebs its through their drug rehab program. But there haven’t been any recent recrutes. New celebs of CoS are often second generation cult members, who don’t know any better.

    • LP says:

They arent “new” but Laura Prepon, Ben Foster, and Michael Pena are all deep in it :( I felt awful paying to see the ant man movies and really enjoying Michael Pena in them, since we all know COS is getting a big cut. The other two I can avoid a little more easily thank goodness

      • Jane says:

Michael Pena? I didn’t know that. He is not a second generation cult member. Laura Prepon got in thanks to “That 70′s show” co-star Danny Masterson (alleged rapist).
I heard that Ben Foster was almost out of the cult when he was in a relationship with Robin Wright, but he got pulled in again when he got together with Prepon.

    • CuriousCole says:

Tarat3: Elisabeth Moss is a Scientologist, but she prefers to keep that under wraps.

  16. Boston Green Eyes says:

“Monk-like existence” in Hollywood parlance = gay.

    • tracking says:

I have it on good authority this is correct. I’m glad he’s not torturing himself or us with any more fake relationships, hope he keeps that up.

      • Boston Green Eyes says:

Yeah, I’ve heard it, too. I guess color me surprised that anyone still thinks he’s straight.

    • Dr Mrs The Monarch says:

I think it is more of a nun-like existence. He is “married” to the church (cult).

    • minx says:

      Yep.

    • Ladykeller says:

I gotta be honest, I’m more inclined to believe the gossip that says he’s asexual. He is definitely charming and has bona fide movie star charisma but I just don’t see him getting sexy with either gender. In his case I think he may truly be a monk.

      • nicole says:

Wasnt he in the early days thinking about becoming a priest, I think he is asexual too, he just seems to centre his life around films sets and sceintology, he seems to live a very sad and boring life to me, but everyone to there own thing if that makes them happy.

    • cf86713 says:

Or he could just be asexual not everyone is into sex.

For some reason that’s worse than being gay to some people.

  17. Wood Dragon says:

Considering how deeply indoctrinated he is with that Cult do we really want an in depth interview from him?

    • Pandy says:

OK, that made me LOL – you make a great point! I do have sympathy for Tom. Not sure why, but I do.

  18. Jane says:

the really interesting part of this article is that TC moved into an apartment in Clearwater. Also his son lives in that CoS infested city. This is news to me. TC is also really so deep in the cult with staffers being with him all the time. Leah Remini said something note worthy in an interview. She said the reason why TC and also Travolta don’t leave the cult is only partly because they are scared what CoS might reveal about them. The most important reason is that given their status in the cult they get pampered with all those free of charge staffers who they can boss around. For them the cult is super convenient.

    • Christin says:

If these celebrities fork over a lot of money, why wouldn’t it be more cost effective to leave and hire their own helpers? I assume it’s because of how subservient the lower rung ones are?

I still remember the GC documentary interviews and descriptions of non-celebrity higher-ups being locked up and forced to do menial chores in the hardest ways. Yet several left. I don’t understand why celebrities stay, because they have so much more visibility and options.

      • aenflex says:

I think the auditing has a lot to do with it, the secrets. If someone is gay, or a pedophile, or asexual, or transgender, etc, the church knows it and will absolutely leak it. That, and they’ve completed audited out their identities.

  19. Amelie says:

He won’t give interviews or talk about his personal life because of his epic divorce from Katie Holmes and how widely publicized it became. We all know he doesn’t have a relationship with Suri. He was seen with her a few times post-divorce but nothing since then.

I remember reading a story about a childhood friend of Cruise’s who ran a fan page Facebook group. He apparently asked her to have the members of the group to stop posting pictures of Suri because she was no longer part of his life. His friend then told the group and said Cruise told her Suri was no longer in his life and to stop posting pictures of them together. I doubt Katie is the one who is stopping Tom from seeing his daughter. Tom doesn’t want a relationship with Suri because she is a “suppressive person.” I always wonder how much it must eat at him that he didn’t get primary custody of Suri, that he wasn’t able to keep her like he did with Connor and Isabella when he divorced Nicole Kidman. If he didn’t leave Scientology so he could have a relationship with his own biological daughter, he’ll never leave IMO.

I also don’t think he has much of a relationship with Isabella. I always wondered why she went off all the way to London, how she got married to someone who is not in Scientology. I think she did that to escape her father and Scientology. I don’t think he talks to her either. I think the only kid he still has contact with is Connor, the only one still in Scientology.

    • Jane says:

Yeah agreed with the thought that the only kid he still has contact to is Connor. I doubt that it’s a traditional father son relationship as Sciebots see children as little adults and often parents don’t show much emotion towards their own kids as they are being “raised” in the cult often also physically separated from their parents. Cruise never had much time for his kids anyway given that he has been a workaholic for decades.

The facebook group tea about not posting any Suri pics their is interesting.

And yes the media storm about his divorce from Katie is the reason why he stays away from too much PR about his private life. He plays the victim now, but he and his PR were the ones who pushed interest in his private life for years.

    • lucy2 says:

That’s good to hear that Isabella might have gotten out. I hope so, and that if possible, she can reestablish a relationship with her mother again someday.

    • jwoolman says:

They were acting as if Connor was the heir apparent some years ago. He was very much involved with ceremonial stuff his dad was doing. Don’t know if that is still the plan, but sad to hear he’s now in Clearwater. I thought he had a chance of getting away from them . But he has always seemed very close to his dad.

      • H says:

Connor works as a fishing boat captain in Clearwater. Rumor around town is that his father bought him a house there so he could go to CoS services anytime he wants. I used to live near Clearwater and still go back once a year to visit friends. The locals hate Cruise and Scientology with a passion. So it doesn’t surprise me that Cruise sold off all his properties to move to their Mecca.

      • holly hobby says:

I thought Conor wanted to be a DJ? So he quit that and is now into fishing? Tommy didn’t go to Isabella’s wedding. I think the brother did but neither of the parents did. That was very telling. Maybe he didn’t like it that she was marrying outside the cult?

  20. Tiffany says:

    Wow, this is just……wow.

The dumbest thing Tom Cruise has ever done was cut ties with Pat Kingsley. If it was me, I would give her whatever she wants to have me back as a client.

    • holly hobby says:

If I remember correctly from the Going Clear book, he cut her because Miss. Cabbage asked him to. Kingsley was not a $cibot and she was the one who told him to keep his religious beliefs on the down low. I remember how his sister was the spokesperson and all sorts of things went wrong at that time.

  21. Meg says:

I don’t believe Tom is single. Publicly single-YES, but i bet he has a lady in his life. He’s always been in relationships. It’s just that this time he’s private

  22. Bridget says:

Even 13 years later, Tom is still keeping his head down and working to repair his career and reputation from the era of couch jumping. Because it wasn’t just the big relationship sell, it was also when he wanted to push Scientology hardcore. He never should have fired Pat Kingsley, but she wasn’t on board with the Sci rollout.

On a superficial note, I can’t with all of the fillers he puts into his face. He’s still trying to look like he’s in his 30s and it looks weird and puffy now. It’s okay to age a little bit.

    • holly hobby says:

It’s true what they say. No matter what you put in your face, the neck and hands are a dead giveaway. You can see his age on his neck and hands.

  23. Mo' Comments Mo' Problems says:

Was the E! scripted series ‘The Arrangement’ based on his life and such?

    • Amelie says:

It was definitely inspired from Scientology. E! can pretend to be coy but they aren’t fooling anyone. I watched a few episodes of the first season, it was enjoyable in a stupid kind of way. Michael Vartan plays the David Miscavige figure/head of the cult and it was so funny to see him in that role!

  24. ChipnSticks says:

His teeth are grossing me out.

  25. perplexed says:

“Because it feels like maybe Miscavige is still trying to get Tom another wife?”

Who would want to be with him after the Katie Holmes debacle.

She may have been naive, but I have my doubts the majority of people are that naive.

Being with Tom means being a Scientologist, and when even Jada Pinkett Smith is going “uh, no” I can’t figure out one person who would be willing to convert for him. (I know there are other Scientologists within the organization that he can be with, but he likes his women attractive in the face and over 5’7″).

  26. minx says:

Tom, ditch the stupid platform shoes. You’re not fooling anyone. Embrace your height, whatever it is.

  27. Cara says:

There is no question that Tom is creepy and very likely not the nice guy he wants us all to think he is. However, that being said, I do feel sorry for him. He has devoted his life to something that isn’t even real. I Just wonder if he knows that and is just in it for the power, like that freak show David. Either way, it’s too bad. All that potential for “real” good and he chose the wrong team for sure.

    • aenflex says:

I’ve read interviews and listened to podcasts from high ranking ex-members, and it’s been said that when Tom finally made it to OT 8 (or whatever level) where you get to find out about Zemu, he lost it for a bit and there was a lot of worry that he would blow. I feel like they had to have something huge on him, something that he felt was too damning to ever get out, to reel him back in then.

  28. Skippy says:

I have always liked Tom Cruise movies since The Outsiders. I haven’t seen all of them as I read reviews. But I have a number of them on DVD. I am not much interested in his private life and I am happy he is not sticking his nose in mine. When I enjoy a performance by an actor/actress, I wish them well as they have brought enjoyment in my life.

    • I don’t care about Tom or his private life because he’s a Zenu worshiping $cibot. I’m just glad for Suri that he doesn’t come around her with his cult of crazy zealotry.

  29. SJhere says:

If Nicole writes a book about Tom and their years together…she could charge $50 a copy and still have it be a huge bestseller. Cruise has been a major movie star for decades, now in his mid 50′s and every female between 45-65 who remembers him at the height of his career used to think of him as The Heartthrob.
Honestly, Cocktail was a stupid movie but Cruise and Brian Brown were gorgeous.
Lots of us went to almost every movie of his back then. Hell, my GFs and I would hit the bars and then went to see Cocktail just to ogle Cruise, 3x over one summer.
Sad how his life has turned out.

IMO, all churches should be taxed. And CoS is a cult. Period.
