Miles Teller was cast as Goose Junior in this horrific-sounding ‘Top Gun’ sequel

“Thank You For Your Service” Premiere

I have not been paying attention to all of the updates on the Top Gun sequel. I never gave a sh-t about the OG Top Gun, why would I care about the sequel after all these years? Well, I’ll pay attention now, because it’s all so hilariously perfect and dumb. The OG Top Gun came out in 1986. It was blatantly an advertisement for the US Air Force Navy. Guys literally signed up to serve in the military, thinking they would become badass renegades like Tom Cruise. The film is terrible. Well, thirty-plus years later, they’re making a sequel. Tom Cruise has been trying to make this happen for a while.

In Top Gun 2, Cruise will be back to playing Maverick, only Maverick is more establishment now. And he’s trying to rein in Goose Junior. Goose was the character played by Anthony Edwards, whose character – SPOILER – dies in the movie. Anthony Edwards is a pale guy with sandy hair, and his wife/widow was played by blonde Meg Ryan. So obviously their child, Goose Junior, would look exactly like a douchier Tom Cruise, right? That’s what happened. There was a huge casting call for SON OF GOOSE and all of the “young Hollywood” dudes were auditioning for the role. Miles Teller got it.

Miles Teller has nabbed the role of Goose’s son in Top Gun 2. Teller will star opposite Tom Cruise in the long-in-the works sequel that sees Cruise reprising his role as the hotshot pilot with the call sign Maverick.

Joseph Kosinski, who directed Cruise in sci-fi thriller Oblivion, is directing the movie, which is also bringing back Val Kilmer’s rival pilot code-named Iceman.

The role of Goose’s son was a hot one and many of young Hollywood’s finest were chasing it, even traveling to Cruise’s home in Clearwater, Florida, for the testing process. Teller beat out Nicholas Hoult and Glen Powell for the role. Dylan O’Brien and Austin Butler were among those in the mix in a previous stage.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

I laughed out loud at several parts of this dry THR report. I mean, can you imagine Nicholas Hoult making the pilgrimage down to the Scientology Dungeon in Clearwater to audition for this role? Can you imagine Miles Teller doing the same?!? I’m worried that Miles is going to be rolling with Xenu by the end of this mess. Obviously, Miles was chosen because he looks like a taller, Millennial-frat-boy version of Tom Cruise. Miles would not ever be “the child of” Meg Ryan and Anthony Edwards. But I guess it doesn’t really matter. All that matters is the Tom Cruise gets to work with his “through the looking glass” doppelganger. The thing is… Miles Teller can actually ACT. He’s quite talented. It’s just that his personality off-camera sucks pretty hard. So this will either be a huge mess, or – as I said – Tom Cruise is going to convert Miles.

Yes, when I first saw this casting, I was like, ‘Is the storyline that Goose’s wife cheated with Maverick and it’s actually his kid because, otherwise…terrible casting pick.’

Top Gun is a hugely important movie in our military family. It was, and remains, my brother’s favorite film, and we must have watched it 1,000 times as kids/teens. We also lived, at the time, in the town some of it was shot in so, yeah, I admit I’m probably gonna see it, even though I know it will almost certainly be awful.

    • annie says:

When is Hollywood going to realize that nobody wants to see a 300 year old Xenu worshipping gnome play a heart-throb?

      • Mrs.Krabapple says:

If they didn’t learn from “The Mummy” bombing, I doubt they’ll learn from this.

Btw, the movie is called “Top Gun: Maverick,” which really is Tom Cruise calling it “Top Gun: ME.” What an egotistical @ss.

  2. NicknameII says:

Navy. Top Gun is Navy not Air Force.

  3. Ankita says:

I just dont get his appeal.. And after this move, i’m pretty sure i wont get the appeal of the top Gun movie series either.. :|

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Someone once called “Top Gun” a turducken of crap. It’s really a gay sex romp, disguised as a Navy recruiting film, disguised as a brainless action movie.

  4. Christin says:

The best thing about original TG was the soundtrack. There were a couple of memorable songs that take me back to 1986. And I’ll confess that Tom was considered a cute actor then, during the TG and Cocktail days of the late 1980s.

    • Deedee says:

The soundtrack made the movie. Also, the volleyball scene was so “rewindable” back in the day, and we were so happy to have VCRs. But when the shirts were off, it wasn’t Tom we were all watching, but Iceman and Slider.

    • Zapp Brannigan says:

      Watching every motion
      In my foolish lover’s game
      On this endless ocean
      Finally lovers know no shame
      Turning and returning
      To some secret place inside
      Watching in slow motion
As you turn around and say
      Take my breath away ✈️✈️✈️✈️

      • Christin says:

Berlin! That song and the beat of Danger Zone will be in my head all day.

I played a cassette of TG until it was nearly worn out. Just found out they have done two reissues with more songs.

  5. Kara Zor-El says:

I looooooove that stupid movie. It kickstarted my Tom Cruise crush back in middle school. :D

I’ll probably end up seeing this. I find Miles Teller weirdly sexy despite the fact he’s a douchebag.

  6. Becks1 says:

The original Top gun is awesome. I’m sure if I saw it now for the first time I’d be like…..whats the big deal? but it really is just such a great movie. It’s cheesy and over the top and I doubt its an accurate portrayal of Navy life (because it is about the navy, lol, not the air force) but its so good.

    The volleyball scene alone!! haha.

    the soundtrack!

Anyway – that said – this sequel sounds stupid all around.

  7. Mia4s says:

Wow, way to make doubly sure I’ll never see this movie. 😂

So I was thinking the other day about these way late (20+ year) sequels. Have any of them other than Star Wars and Indiana Jones been unqualified hits? I mean, Wall Street wasn’t, Ghostbusters was a flop, Terminator failed (twice, and is currently filming another almost guaranteed failure), etc. What were the huge hits beyond Star Wars and Indy? Is it really just because of those two (which are special cases anyway) that we are stuck in this mediocre and lazy, late sequelizing hell?

    • Deedee says:

Well, this reminds me of the casting of Shia LeBeouf as Indy’s son, so that doesn’t bode well at all.

  8. damejudi says:

My nephew (on XH side of family) is named Maverick b/c his dad worshipped this movie.

    That’s all I’ve got.

  9. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Teller kinda looks like Tom Cruise, Nicholas Cage and Richard Gere had a baby. I remember major eyerolling when I watched the original show. The only thing I liked about it was that song sung by Berlin which was one of my favorite bands in the 80s. Berlin’s Sex was everything lol.

  10. KBeth says:

This movie sounds like a terrible idea.
Miles Teller is not cute & has very serious douche face.

    • K-Peace says:

Yes he does, with a douche personality to match his douche-face. Can’t stand this guy. He did some decent acting in “Whiplash”, but I’ve seen him in a couple other movies and thought he was terrible. I personally don’t understand why he keeps getting cast in movies. Yuck.

      • Alisha says:

K-peace I agree. I have found all of his acting very one-note and think he is majorly overrated.

    • mom2two says:

Hollywood will never give up in it’s quest to make Miles Teller happen. He’s a total douche.

  11. Anon55 says:

Top Gun is actually about Navy Pilots, not Air Force.

  12. Jamie says:

Ryan Gosling should’ve been case as “Goose Jr.”

  13. SamC says:

My friends and I all LOVED Top Gun and as someone else said, that volleyball scene (whew!) and the other when they serenade Kelly McGillis’ character! And what person of a certain age still does that up down handslap after a good anything? If I catch it while channel surfing will always stop to watch a few minutes, was just a fun, popcorn summer movie. Doubt I’ll see the new one because Tom Cruise’s influence now will mean it’s all intense looks, action scenes and fights.

    • AMA1977 says:

LOL. It was on TV the other night, so my husband (who was one of the young, gullible teen boys who thought he was going to be a badass Navy pilot when this came out!) stopped to watch it. It has NOT aged well. The volleyball scene is still hot though, and everyone is right, Lil’ Tommy C. has NOTHING to do with that.

Miles Teller is a douche-bro who thinks he’s the second coming. He and Tommy are either going to be BFFs and Miles will be recruited, or they will HATE each other and the movie will be a steaming pile of terrible. Well, the movie will probably be terrible either way, but I can’t wait for the dramz I think the clashing egos of DoucheBro Miles and Crazy Tom will produce!

  14. whatWHAT? says:

I guess I’m the only one, but I think Teller was well cast. If you look at pics of Edwards from Top Gun, Teller actually does look like a dark-haired version of young Goose. to me, anyway.

Still won’t see this movie, though.

Hope the IMDB link is OK.

    • Spicecake38 says:

Yep,the heavy lidded eyes, and the shape of their mouths, and a certain expression they share makes him a decent choice as Goose’s son.

  15. JeanGrey says:

Good gracious! Great Balls of Fire! What is this blasphemy??

I LOOOVEEEDD that movie the first time I saw it. I was about 9 yrs old and fell in love with being a fighter pilot and unfortunately, due to my astigmatism and no Lasik available at the time, my hopes were dashed lol. And OH MY! that cast was sexy! As much as I can’t stand Tom now, I have to admit he was hot back then. Val Kilmer as well. And Adrian Pasdar who played Nathan Petrelli on Heroes was so young and beautiful back then. I even though Tom Skerrit was a very good looking older man at the time. I bawled my eyes out when Mav lost Goose. Loved the rivalry between Mav and Ice. I can recite so many lines from that movie still, it’s ridiculous. The sound track was amazing.

As for Miles, he’s a “meh” for me. But i can see him as Goose’s son if he dyes his hair a sandy blonde. I also thought Zac EFron would make a good son of Maverick and Charlie. I always wanted a sequel, but at the place Tom is at now and him being so Xenu, I’m afraid it will get effed up. SMDH

    • Birdix says:

My boyfriend at the time actually went for it—joined ROTC at Stanford, went to flight school, top of his class. Ended up flying helicopters because nobody got jets the week he graduated. Dreams dashed by logistics. Spent a summer at the base in Pensacola—so beautiful but so different from California. Total culture shock.

  16. tealily says:

Anthony Edwards was the only good part of Top Gun, and I’m still sad about Dr. Green from E.R. on top of it. Can we not do better to honor the memory of not-actually-dead Anthony Edwards??? This casting is shameful!

  17. holly hobby says:

I’m sure he had all those guys go down to $ci central to convert as well as audition. I can probably write the storyline too. Maverick goes all out to save careless Goose Jr. blah blah.

I watched the first one and it nearly put me to sleep. I’m skipping this one. Not putting money into that cult.

  18. smcollins says:

Love the OG TG. My middle school bestie & me nicknamed ourselves Maverick & Goose (I was Goose because I’m more of a sidekick than the lead). But….I think a sequel is a terrible idea. Seems like a desperate move on Tom Cruise’s part to relive the glory days, so to speak. Some things should just be left alone.

  19. Gail says:

After watching Set It Up, I now want Glen Powell to be in everything. That being said, maybe it’ll be better for him career wise by not being a part of this.

    • Dr Mrs The Monarch says:

I like Glen Powell too! He should take the next-generation Iceman role. I have no interest in this film based on the casting choices so far, but if Glen is in it I would watch.

  20. Harryg says:

I can’t stand him! Why is he cast so often????

  21. Miss M says:

All three actors are talented. Two out of three have charisma for days. One out of three could look like Goose’s son.
I think they chose Teller because they know if they chose Glen Powell, Tom Cruise would be upstage by looks and charisma…

  22. Berry says:

For the sake of realism… If Maverick was supposed to be in his early /mid 20′s in the original Top Gun, that would make him early to mid 50′s now. Would a man that age still be able to fly a fighter jet?

  23. IMUCU says:

Never seen Top Gun, but kinda disappointed to hear that Tom has a permanent house in Clearwater because most of the other major Scientologist celebs with homes here have been into where my husband works, but not Tom yet (who is the one my husband would like to see in-person :-p)…Well, at least this will give him hope, lol.
