Kelly Ripa & Ryan Seacrest did a juice fast, Ryan says it ‘cleanses your organs’

Ryan Seacrest still inexplicably has a morning co-hosting gig with Kelly Ripa and remains a fixture at E!, where he’s been accused of sexual harassment by his former stylist, which he denies. (For what it’s worth.) Ryan and Kelly, who are both incredibly fit and slender, were recently discussing a “juice cleanse,” they each did, at Ryan’s suggestion. Juice cleanses used to be all the rage but there’s been a growing awareness that they’re unnecessary, unhealthy and can be dangerous. As a result they’re not as popular anymore and celebrities rarely promote them. Enter Ryan and Kelly, who don’t care about any of that and just want to lose weight. They didn’t mention the name of the cleanse but People got the details, it’s one that Gwyneth Paltrow recommended. Ryan claimed that not eating and drinking these concoctions “cleanses your organs,” which is not true at all, and Kelly discussed her changing bowel habits because of course she did.

For the last two weeks, Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest have been doing a mysterious new cleanse — with one of them handling it better than the other.

The juice-only cleanse is iZO’s Superfood Cleanse, and is a favorite of Gwyneth Paltrow. Seacrest’s girlfriend, Shayna Taylor, read about it online and decided to give it a try with him for five days last week.

Cleansers mix iZO’s superfood powders — which include algae, seaweeds, seeds and more — into juice or water for up to seven days.

After Seacrest’s successful experience, Ripa decided to tackle it too — her first juice-only cleanse ever — but she isn’t handling it too well so far.

She opened up Tuesday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan wondering if she can make it past day two of the cleanse.

“I’m going to be honest, I’m not going to make it,” she said. “I don’t think I’m going to make it.”

“You can do it; you have more strength than anybody,” Seacrest told her. “It’s a restart for summer.”

Seacrest, who finished the cleanse the week prior, admitted to teasing Ripa with all the foods — and coffee — he can have now.

“This morning, I had this beautiful, warm breakfast, and coffee,” he said.

“And you sent [a video of] it to Mark [Consuelos, her husband], and he showed it to me,” Ripa replied. “You are a monster too … Mark goes, ‘look at this, Ryan didn’t want me to show you this.’ And he plays it for me, and it’s Ryan eating gorgeous, steaming porridge, and French toast, and coffee.”

“You’ll end up getting through. We did it because it cleanses your organs, and I’m telling you, you’ll feel great at the end,” Seacrest said.

[From People]

Haha it’s so funny to not eat, to convince your coworker not to eat, and then to brag when you can eat again. I haven’t missed anything but idiocy by not watching this show for years. I would say I’m disappointed in Kelly, but I have an incredibly low opinion of her ever since she defended Ryan. This isn’t surprising to me at all. That said, I do think that juicing and smoothies can be healthy and beneficial – when they’re consumed along with solid food. I make a smoothie with kale, banana, frozen fruit, yogurt and stevia in the Vitamix almost every day. There’s no sense in buying powders when you can make it cheap with real food. I also eat a regular breakfast, lunch and dinner because I know that my body can detox on its own without being starved. If I want to lose weight I just cut calories, I don’t quit eating solid food, that’s how you end up so hungry you eat it all back anyway.

i’ll leave the detox to the professionals….i.e. my liver

  2. Tw says:

This is about being thin and nothing else. Do you guys know that Goop had the huevos to claim on instagram recently that she had never heard of orthorexia? Bitch please. She’s been promoting that $hit for years.

    • Apalapa says:

Yes. I saw that. And yes. GOOP is the definition of orthorexia, sans the alcohol and one cigarette she smokes a week (but which are both appetite suppressants).

She is such a beautiful woman, but I have learned more and more that many of my friends who do these liquid only fasts when they are already thin and beautiful like Ryan and Kelly and GOOP doesn’t mean good mental health.

  3. NameChange says:

I’m still mad that Ryan’s creepy behavior had no consequences. The parent company for all of his projects basically cleared him before they’d even investigated anything.

  4. Veronica S. says:

No. That’s not how biology works.

They starved themselves for a week is what they’re basically telling you. A juice “cleanse” is essentially just low-sugar carbs with a water base. Done long enough, it would actually do the opposite of a detox – you’d get ketone buildup in the kidneys from your body having to use accessory metabolic functions.

  5. Jenns says:

I can’t believe they would even let him promote the “it cleanses your organs” BS on the air.

  6. Leo says:

I hate how this “clean-your-body” stuff has been hijacked and taken to the levels of extreme nonsense by celebrity culture.
There’s an organ in you body that takes care of detox. It makes kale look like an amateur by comparison. It’s called a liver. You die if it fails. Very quickly and very painfully.

  7. Jane says:

FFS…just drink some Metamucil according to the directions and a doctor’s advice.

  8. me says:

I think Ryan is just afraid of becoming “fat” again. He was overweight as a child and teen. Now it seems he’s so scared of gaining a few pounds that he goes over-board. I don’t know what Kelly’s deal is but she seems underweight to me. The camera adds pounds so I can’t imagine how thin she must look like in real life. I swear she looked a “healthier weight” when she first started acting in soaps.

    • Apalapa says:

I mean, some people are just little naturally. I think Kelly is. As for Ryan, I wonder about people who were fat as kids or teens because I had many friends who were fat before they sprouted really tall.

I wish I had more friends who don’t hate their bodies.

I have a really nice friend who I love. I feel sad when she is talking about not having a flatter stomach or being out of shape and fat and ugly when she works out and is beautiful. A tall thin yoga teacher.

It didn’t matter how many times someone tried to reassure her she had zero to worry about.

But, I want to say to her- if you would not use those words for your best friend or daughter, why do you use them for yourself?

I hope she can figure out why. it is hard to be around someone who is always finding criticism with themselves.

I wouldn’t want to work with Kelly and Ryan for that same reason. Just, get some therapy. Please. You are fine the way you are.

      • me says:

We always treat ourselves worse than we treat others. We hate ourselves the most don’t we? I have seen old footage of Kelly and she was probably 10 pounds heavier when she was in her 20′s doing soap operas. She is extremely lean now but I am sure she diets and exercises A LOT.

      • ChillyWilly says:

Nope, Kelly was curvy when she was a teen and on Days of Our Lives. She was very cute and healthy looking. She looks like an anemic raisin now.

  9. barrett says:

I like that so many body types are celebrated today not like when I was a teen ( just the supermodel or waifs) but my exercise addicted body dysmorphia ping goes up with her after pictures on the daily mail last week.

I’m assuming this is how she deals w being in the celeb world but ping!!!

  10. Arpeggi says:

Smoothies are a great way to eat lots of fruits and veggies but… They’re also a great way to gain weight since they don’t fill you as well and for as long as the solid form (think about it: when will you eat 1 apple, 1 orange, 2 cups of berries and 2 of kale and a cup of yogurt and then have eggs on toast?) Just like fresh fruit juices, they need to be taken in moderation.

Juice cleanses are a plain no though. There are not scientifically sound, they’re often a way to hide your EDs and they can damage your kidneys, liver and microbiota. We have teeth for a reason: we can chew our food.

Seriously, there should be more mandatory science classes in schools. And people should stop taking health advices from people without a life science degree.

  11. Natalie S says:

How do these two have an audience? They’re so empty. Who wakes up in the morning and thinks, “I want to know what Kelly Ripa and Ryan Seacrest have to say!”

  12. Xtina says:

Hoping Ryan’s days are numbered. After the Roseanne and Lauer disasters these big networks need to vet these troublesome “talents” aka narcissistic divas.

  13. megan says:

I really can’t stand Kelly Ripa – her demeanor just screams “look at me” with everything she says and does. Someone as tiny as her certainly doesn’t need to be doing a juice cleanse. Methinks she has body issues. And I hope she isn’t passing them along to her daughter, who already doesn’t want her mother posting anything about her on IG.

  14. DiegoInSF says:

In the header preview, she looks like she’s wearing that aging makeup for when actors play someone decades older or a future self. 😱

  15. Anastasia says:

I was with my husband at the VA hospital and they had this mess on the TV in the waiting room, turned up VERY loudly. Ripa is so incredibly VAPID. Literally for the first 20-25 minutes of their show, all they talked about was this cleanse. Ripa was gross and talked about how much it was making her poop. Then she went on and on about how hungry she is. I’m looking at this rich, rail thin woman who lives in a modern advanced country talking about how she’s intentionally making herself hungry, and all I can think is how incredibly insulting and tone deaf she’s being.

Made me so glad I don’t even turn on the TV in the morning.

  16. raincoaster says:

Does anyone on the planet think that Kelly Ripa needs to eat less food? She probably swells up by osmosis when she stands next to a fat person.

I did a juice cleanse, because although I know the science, I just wanted to lose some fucking weight. I didn’t lose a pound during the three days, but the day I went back to regular eating I lost three pounds. But of course it all came back on over the next week. Pointless.

But interestingly, fasting advocates talk about this “clarity” you get after a couple of days, and I definitely felt that. Not sure if I was actually more perceptive or if that was a hallucination from consuming about 300 calories a day for three straight days, but it was very real and very interesting. I might try it again just to get to that state. Everything felt clear, everything felt like I was perceiving it on multiple levels. It’s the state of numinosity, the feeling that we are all connected to everything, and the divine is in everything. I’ve had it before, under other circumstances.

  17. Brittany says:

Kelly Ripa is nearing that age when an extra 10 pounds would really benefit her face… I am not trying to body shame, but since this woman is promoting not eating…

  18. jana says:

Kelly is going to find out really fast that the skinnier you are at 46 or 47, the more Botox, fillers, etc. she’s going to need because you lose all the fat in your face as you age, thereby causing wrinkles…it’s like the old adage, after 40 you need to choose…. your ass or your face. Whichever you choose, the other suffers! Luckily for us, we are in a time where a big ass in no longer such a bad thing!
