Lupita Nyong’o in white, feathery Dior at Cannes: gorgeous or uneventful?

71st annual Cannes Film Festival

I’m glad Lupita Nyong’o didn’t just come to Cannes to try to sell Jessica Chastain’s 355 project. Lupita has modeling contracts too – she’s one of the faces of Lancome, and women with those big beauty contracts are often invited to attend some of the premieres and events around Cannes. Lupita attended Night #3’s premiere of Sorry Angel and she wore this… interesting gown. This is Dior. She’s only worn Dior a handful of times throughout her career, to mixed reviews. I give her credit for knowing what looks good on her body, and this Dior is cut well, better than the crap they give Jennifer Lawrence. But is it GOOD? Or do we merely think it’s good because Lupita is wearing it? I mean, a feathered skirt isn’t revolutionary (nor is this skirt all that well-made), and a cage-like top is kind of… meh. I don’t know. But her face is perfect.

I don’t even want to tell you how closely I zoomed in the high-res images of Irina Shayk in this Versace dress. I did it for research, I swear. I wanted to be able to write definitively that she was not wearing ANYTHING underneath this “New Safety Pin Dress.” I can say with certainty: she was not. She was going commando. Better her than me! As for the actual dress… I’m not really into it, but my qualms are not about safety pins and panties. No, I think this shade of red is bad. It’s too orange-y. I think it should have been more of a blue-red. Also: her jewels are Chopard. I think that’s why she’s in Cannes, to shill for Chopard.

Chloë Sevigny in Chanel. Peeps…. I laughed! I have blinds with the exact same drawstrings!!

Stella Maxwell is a real model who gets paid to model clothing and jewelry and such. She’s also Kristen Stewart’s girlfriend. And I feel like K-Stew’s general lip-biting angst has rubbed off on Stella, because she looked very grouchy on the Cannes red carpet. Maybe it had something to do with this really cheap-looking custom Roberto Cavalli gown.

Aja Naomi King in Zuhair Murad Spring 2018. This looks like Zuhair Murad, in that I could totally imagine Jennifer Lopez in this. It’s got that J-Lo vibe to it. That’s not a slam: I’m a defender of boringly pretty dresses on a red carpet. But she could have and perhaps should have taken a bigger risk!

  1. Alix says:

Lupita could rock a paper sack, but this dress is pretty wretched.

    • Char says:

Lupita is a gift, she transcends any dress, any jewelry, that said, the dress is simple.

      • Felicia says:

You know what struck me? The lining on the top is flesh tone for a WOC. It may not be the best dress she’s ever worn, but if Dior is starting to specifically include something like the lining of a dress for a WOC, I’m not going to criticize the dress. I’d rather encourage the Dior to continue in that direction.

    • citney says:

Lupita’s beauty is unworldly, I hope she gets the big break she really deserves.

  2. Clare says:

Lupita is just next level beautiful.

    That’s all I have.

    • Rescue Cat says:

Gowns don’t move me. I look at them and feel nothing.

Whoops. That wasn’t suppossed to be a response to your post.

    • Lilly says:

I didn’t have high hopes based on the header, but when I clicked through my first thought was: “OOOOooohhhh, it’s lovely and so is she.”

  3. Veronica T says:

Would have loved that Zuhair in red or dark purple. Boring as it is.

And I usually despise Dior, but I do love this on Lupita – yes, she elevates everything she wears! But I like the idea of hard cage up top and then soft feathers below. It kind of appeals to me. Don’t know why!

  4. MI6 says:

Lupita raises everything she wears to the Next Level.

  5. Becks says:

Lupita looks amazing. Would the dress look as good on anyone else? Probably not. But it looks perfect on her. I love her red carpet style.

  6. lightpurple says:

Lupita looks very pretty. The dress works.

  7. Maum says:

    Nope.

    To all of them.

  8. Jayna says:

I thought she looked amazing in that dress. I love it on her.

  9. Astrid says:

Even if I was model thin, I wouldn’t wear a safety pin dress let along a dress that doesn’t conceal underwear.

    • Tessy says:

It’s even missing one of the pins on the bottom. She must have lost it and didn’t have time to find another.

  10. lower-case deb says:

no time to shop for more fabric,
    no time to sew.
    ask the concierge
    for some safety pins.
    get the hole punch
we’ll do it the Craftcation way.

  11. lucy2 says:

I don’t care for any of these.
Lupita is gorgeous, but the top and bottom look like two different dresses, or like someone couldn’t decide what to do. I like the skirt better than the top.

  12. Pineapple says:

It should be illegal to use the words Lupita and uneventful in the same sentence.

  13. KLO says:

I just love Lupitas hair right now. it is so heavenly and fluffy. :)

  14. Veronica S. says:

I think she looks lovely. It helps that she has such a deep skin tone – it creates a beautiful contrast with the cool white tones of the dress that you wouldn’t get with lighter skin. I consider her easily one of the most stunningly beautiful women to hit Hollywood in a long time.

    • tracking says:

Yes, I realized that was partly why I liked it–her skin tone looks so beautiful behind the semi-translucent bodice.

  15. Slowsnow says:

I could never go commando with a dress or anything for that matter because… how can I put this? Leakage? I’d be too worried.

These ladies are all gorgeous and have amazing bodies, each one with a completely different body type.

    • Polly says:

Yeah, I know what you mean. She may not be going commando. Some of these dresses have built in undies, or she might be wearing one of those weird looking c-strings that kind of just clip on. Either way, the dress is tacky.

  16. minx says:

Irina still looks exhausted. Get some sleep!

  17. lobbit says:

I think the Dior is AMAZING on Lupita. To ask whether the dress looks good because it’s on Lupita or because it’s inherently awesome…is overthinking it, imo.

  18. Grant says:

I don’t hate Lupita’s dress but I think it needed to be more fitted in the bodice.

  19. smee says:

    Double slits never look good.

  20. RabbitOne says:

Lupita and Irina, I can’t even look at them. It’s like looking at the sun. They are two of the most beautiful humans ever to have lived. I wonder if they just get up in the morning, look in the mirror and stare in awe? Irina’s dress, I hate it though. Lupita’s dress? I’m conflicted. On first glance, I hated it. But look at it for a few minutes, i am sort of intrigued.

  21. Linn says:

I like Lupita’s dress, but I hate how her eyeshadow and Lipstick are so matchy-matchy.

  22. Taxi says:

Lupita: White doesn’t accent her look as well. Should have been a clear, bright color. Nice lining for the bodice.
Chloe: I thought the same thing – pulls for shades. She looks like a child who has to pee. I hate that crossed-leg pigeon toed thing. Melania mouth.
Stella’s dress doesn’t fit her chest or bust properly & the necklace is wrong.
Irina: OK, you’ve gone commando. So? Like Zoe K @ the Met Ball. Why?

  23. Juu says:

So many beautiful women! Oh, and Chloë Sevigny…

  24. babu says:

Lupita rocks like noone else that conceptual birdcage thing.

I love Sevigny’s dress and the pendants, but not like that. Over the dress with a short statement necklace on the decollete.

    The pin dress = no.
