Janelle Monae at the Grammys: ‘We come in peace, but we mean business’

60th Annual GRAMMY Awards - Arrivals

Janelle Monae’s appearance at the Grammys wasn’t actually about her appearance. Still, we should say a few words about her Dolce & Gabbana suit – it was awesome. She looked incredible, and it was a relief to see her wearing something with actual color! Anyway, Janelle was invited to present Kesha’s performance of “Praying,” and Janelle ended up giving a wonderful speech about Time’s Up and women not taking any more sh-t. “We come in peace, but we mean business.” This is good too: “And just as we have the power to shake culture, we also have the power to undo the culture that does not serve us well.”

Anna Kendrick in Balmain. I mean… I get it. I get that Anna Kendrick isn’t going to show up to the Grammys in a giant, fluffy dress. I get that this year was more serious, even for the presenters. I get wanting to wear a suit. But THIS suit? This suit is terrible.

Jaden Smith in a MSFTSRep top and G-Star pants. What are we even doing here? How do we know 1 + 1 = 2? What if there’s another planet within this planet? What if we are the metaphysical content of a duck? These are the Thoughts Going Through Jaden Smith’s Head At the Grammys.

Joy Villa is the same a–hole who wore the MAGA dress last year, and this year she wore this anti-choice dumbf–kery. She wanted attention, so here it is.

i didn’t know what a Joy Villa was so i looked her up and she is a right wing Scientologist? that explains a lot actually. hard pass.

  2. Lori says:

    Monae is amazing.

Villa, whoever she is, has horrible taste.

  3. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I can’t roll my eyes deep enough for the Smith kids (and I’m a professional eye roller). Jaden needs to hop into a time machine of his making and go to school, be made to do actual homework, have expectations and parameters and volunteer at homeless shelters on weekends. A positive note? If those pants are the kewl and expensive thang…. I’m showing my son so we can make ‘em. Soooooooo easy!

  4. adastraperaspera says:

Villa surely gets a big check every time she does this kind of thing. I wonder who’s paying?

    • Olenna says:

Must be a private right-wing donor. She’s a real piece of work. Honestly, I thought the right cut her loose after she filed sexual harassment or assault charges against one their own. Then, someone dug up photos (can’t vouch that they’re weren’t ‘shopped) of her past escapades in a sex club or something like, and the deplorables tore her a new one over them. Anyway, she looks tacky.

Right on Janelle Monáe – great speech, love the suit, too. Awesome moment. I’m now wondering about the song she introduced…Praying.

  6. browniecakes says:

It’s perfect. I get the feeling from men friends I have that women are on a rampage. We just want to do a job and have that not include a man hitting on us and making our presence not about the job. We come in peace. But we mean business.

  7. Miranda says:

Did Joy Villa let her Sunday School class paint all over her sample sale David’s Bridal couture?

    • Juls says:

The white dress and the tiara speaks volumes, right? Be a virginal princess. Don’t have sex until married, and then only for procreation purposes. Then, pop out babies Duggar-style.

  8. Tanesha86 says:

Joy Villa is totally irrelevant, who even invited her to the Grammy’s in the first place???

  9. Aerohead21 says:

Jaden and Joy look really bad, but apparently that’s signature for them? Regarding the rest, Anna Kendrick’s look is a little late to the party. That was a popular style a few years ago. And Janelle’s look is another that is perfect, but only on her. If someone else wore it, we’d be like WTF?

  10. lucy2 says:

Janelle looks amazing, and is amazing.
No comment on the rest. Grammys fashion is terrible, and all these posts just remind me how not into popular music I am anymore, LOL.

Joy Villa is hell in a handbag. Idk how, but a few months ago I ended up on her Twitter page and wanted to *claw* my eyes out.

On the other hand, Janelle Monae is this otherworldly being. We are not worthy Janelle!!

    • Pandakeeper says:

IMO, Janelle has one of the most beautiful faces! You can’t fake brows like that. Up there with Halle Berry. I used to have brows like Janelle’s, but I plucked them thin once upon a time because they looked good on an actress I liked. Huge Mistake!

I’ve seen Monae perform in an intimate setting. Loved that show. Love the woman.

  12. Dr. Mrs. The Monarch says:

Love seeing so many more suits on ladies! It is so classy and elegant and feminine without the restrictions that come with a lot of designer dresses (tripping over trains, skirt blowing up, boobs falling out etc).

Jaden…well….he is his own special category of special.

The choose life dress looks like it is trying to incorporate the pride flag…so…does it support marriage equality?…adoption by same-sex patents?…LGBTQ+ people are born this way? This dress would work on Gaga, or almost anyone anyone else other than Joy Villa. She clearly missed her own point.

  13. Malako says:

Monae’s suit is ridiculous. The jacket looks like it was tightened to make her boobs stand out but without a hint of decolletage. The trousers are bulgy in contrast to the jacket. If that is supposed to be a Marlene suit it doesn’t hit the nail on the head. And then somebody decided to put some sticker flowers on that suit to cover up for the design flaws. And I don’t like her hair either: half black half blond? I don’t get it.

Anna Kendrick’s suit is impeccably cut. And that corsage underneath does provide the sexy touch which is necessary for a glam event like the grammys. And her hair is just wild.

  14. Dendenden says:

Janelle should have been Mary Poppins. She has Julie Andrew’s regal bearing and voice.

  15. sunshine gold says:

Janelle is seriously beautiful. Also love the eye makeup.
