Chloe Sevigny on Woody Allen: ‘Would I work with him again? Probably not’

Chloe Sevigny flashes her tongue during the Sundance Film Festival

I totally forgot that Chloe Sevigny acted in a Woody Allen movie. Did you remember that? Quick, name it! My guess is that very few of you can. She appeared in 2004’s Melinda and Melinda, and that was her one and only time working with Woody Allen. But because she’s a woman and journalists only ask women about Woody Allen, Chloe got some Woody questions while she was promoting her latest film at Sundance. Her response was… Sevigny-esque.

From “Boys Don’t Cry” to “American Psycho,” Chloe Sevigny has had one of the most prolific resumes of character parts in independent movies. In 2004, she appeared in the Woody Allen comedy “Melinda and Melinda.” During an interview with Variety on Friday afternoon at the Sundance Film Festival, Sevigny expressed reservations about collaborating with the director.

“I have my own turmoil that I’m grappling with over that decision,” Sevigny said. “Would I work with him again? Probably not.”

That’s all she said? Was there a follow-up question? It’s just an odd way to express that sentiment – “I have my own turmoil…” Like other actors don’t? Granted, Chloe has worked in some bizarre indie films ever since she was teenager, and it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Chloe had some heartbreaking #MeToo stories involving fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kamikaze indie filmmaking. Let’s not forget about Vincent Gallo and The Brown Bunny. Maybe that’s what she meant with “I have my own turmoil that I’m grappling with over that decision.” In any case, I don’t think she’ll work with Woody again, so at least there’s that.

Also: how unflattering is this hairstyle on Chloe? YIKES. These pics are from her appearances at Sundance.

If she likes her hair does it matter if it’s unflattering?

    • Hey Bale says:

Agreed, though I actually think she’s rocking the hell out of it. She’s got a very offbeat fashion sense, gorgeous bone structure, and this gives me the most adorable-but-not-twee Bavaria vibes. She’s always simultaneously looked older and younger than she is, so it works for me because it works on her!

  2. Lucy says:

And no more Terry Richardson either, please. Come on, Chloe. I like you!

  3. tracking says:

Guess I’m in the minority, but I think the hairstyle is cute on her. She always gives me an unpleasant vibe though.

  4. FLORC says:

Can she not say No? These statements given are only self serving. Going with public opinion, but should this movement stop and Woody or another like him be popular they’ve left that door open.

  5. Dorothy#1 says:

Good. I love her she was my favorite character on Big Love.

  6. DiligentDiva says:

Probably not probably means she won’t work with him until all this blows over. But in 2020 if Woody’s still kicking and this entire thing has been brushed back under the rug and she gets a call I’m sure she’ll answer.

  7. OG OhDear says:

She always dresses… interestingly. It’s her thing.

That being said – I’m glad that actors are saying that they will not work with Allen. However, I really wish people would focus more on the producers and executives (e.g. Bezos), since they’re the ones giving Allen the opportunity to continue his career.

  8. AngieB says:

I guess I’m in the minority but I don’t think actors are to blame for working with Woody Allen. Studios keep fininacing and distributing his films. There are only so many paying jobs for actors – his films shouldn’t even be an option they have to consider.

    • Milla says:

Thank you for articulating my thoughts. No matter how many actors we cancel, he is still making movies. And he’s 80sth. He isn’t no gonna face anything.

  9. Valiantly Varnished says:

While I think that people who worked with Allen should be asked this question and be called out on it, I REALLY want one of these actresses to call out the double standard of them being asked while all the actors who have worked with Allen get to skate by on this question.

    • Snazzy says:

Yes I agree. I’d love one of them to answer – “please ask Justin Timberlake that question and let me know what he says, then I’ll get back to you”

  10. Ladykarinsky says:

    EVERYTHING is unflattering on Chloe.

  11. cd3 says:

“Probably” not –> not good enough.

  12. Suki says:

I love Chloe – she’s so quirky. True original.
