Reese Witherspoon in Mouret at the LA ‘Home Again’ premiere: fine or blah?

'Home Again' Los Angeles premiere - Arrivals

I rarely say this about mother-daughter combos, but I wish Reese Witherspoon and Ava Phillippe had switched dresses. Reese brought her daughter as her date to last night’s LA premiere of Home Again, Reese’s latest rom-com. Reese wore this red Roland Mouret dress which is… fine. I don’t love it or hate it. It’s a perfectly acceptable dress. I imagine it would have looked great on Ava. Now imagine Ava’s animal-print dress on Reese… that would have looked awesome, right? Right. Plus, it would have helped Reese achieve her new brand: blousy, semi-drunk Southern mom in her 40s. An animal print just would have worked!

As for Home Again… I’ve seen the trailer a few times and I think it looks like a cute enough concept for a rom-com. I was SHOCKED when I saw Michael Sheen playing her ex though. What’s he doing there? Did he need a paycheck, or did he just like the idea of playing Reese’s ex?

So it will either be a huge hit or a big flop, I think. Meanwhile, Reese recently filmed A Wrinkle in Time with Mindy Kaling, and they became friendly, so now Reese is doing a guest-starring role in The Mindy Project’s final season. Nice! Wreath Witherspoons for everybody!

And I’m also including photos of Lake Bell, who appears in Home Again. She wore Antonio Berardi and arguably the worst bangs of the year. Her hair stylist hates her.

Reese looks fine — although I’m not a fan of the lace detail — and wow, does her daughter look like her dad.

I love Lake Bell but agree that those bangs do her no favors. Occasionally I think about getting bangs but photos like these make me happy my hairstylist keeps discouraging it! Her figure, though, she is a knockout.

    • Snazzy says:

OMG those bangs. Plus her facial expression doesn’t help. She just looks crazy

    • LizLemonGotMarried says:

I just found pics of the hair I got while pregnant, and it’s heavy, blunt cut bangs with long hair. It looks SO cute in pictures, but I sort of remember how much of a pain they were and how long it took to grow the out (my hair is down below my shoulder blades). I made my husband promise me to talk me out of them if I ever got the itch again, and he definitely did that-he apparently hated that haircut but wouldn’t say it to a pregnant lady 😂

Reese looks even more beautiful as she ages. But her outfits and “style” are incredibly boring and downright horrible at times. IMO

    • perplexed says:

She’s short like me. I think it’s more difficult to experiment when you’re short. Whenever short people dress boring, I figure it’s because they’re, well, short.

  3. Sequinedheart says:

It’s fine. Thats all.. just ‘fine’.

  4. KLO says:

She looks good as she always does. Whats the news story?

  5. Meredith says:

Slightly off topic, but do you know who has the worst bangs? Jillian Harris from the Bachelor. Seriously. The worst.

  6. Pandy says:

I LOVE the description of Reese as a blousy, semi drunk Southern Mom. Seriously, that’s how I picture her now.

  7. Scarlett says:

I don’t get why the media plays up the resemblance between Reese and Ava, to me she is a spitting image of Ryan Phillippe!

Love the red dress, not so much the straps though, but the color is on point!

  8. Millenial says:

Okay so I just watched the trailed and…..I kind of want to go see this movie.

Ugh, whatever, confession time, I like Reese. Drunk, belligerent Reese included. Big Little Lies was really good. Wild was really good. Draper James is overpriced, but cute in a Southern way. She’s not terrible, is all I’m saying.

    • perplexed says:

Me too. Her love interest is actually good-looking, which shocked me, since everyone else currently in that age range (mid 20s?) looks kind of ordinary on film.

The premise seems kind of unrealistic to me (since I don’t know whether THREE 25 year old males would bother fighting over one woman, no matter what her age), but at least these dudes don’t look irritating.

Wild made me re-appreciate her as an actress, and BLL was great. I’m glad she’s producing more projects now too.

  9. homeslice says:

I LOVED her performance in BLL…but I really can’t with her. I think she purposely drags her daughter around with her to get the ZOMG, you could sisters!!!!! lol.

  10. Carol says:

Are all three fighting over her? The trailer hasn’t told me much, but I need a feel-good, escapist film so will definitely see it!

I love the red dress and think Ava looks great as well. I like Reese, too.

  11. Lisa says:

Reese is the more famous of the pair of parents so she’s the one people think of when they see Ava. Actually Reese and Ryan have similar features like a LOT of couples do. Maybe people are just attracted to features that are familiar to them, like their mom’s or dad’s features.

And I don’t agree that Reese choose the wrong dress. the animal print one would be too on the nose for her “blousy, semi-drunk Southern mom in her 40s” brand. Perfect description!

  12. AnnaKist says:

I’m with you, Kaiser. RW and Ava could do with switching dresses. It just make me feel as if RW wants to look closer in age to her daughter, and Ava’s dress ages her. And “blowsy, semi-drunk, Southern mum (sic) in her 40s” – too funny!
I haven’t heard of Lake Bell in years! Her fringe looks particularly bad because of the two faded curtains of hair. Her pose here makes her look harsh; a smile would have softened her face, as I think she’s very attractive.

    • perplexed says:

Her daughter has always seemed kind of reserved to me (compared to other celebrity offspring, anyway — i.e Cindy Crawford’s daughter; Will Smith’s kids). For some reason, I’m not surprised she’d pick that dress. Kind of suits her more, er, mature personality (I have no idea if she actually is mature — she just seems to have a somewhat less out there demeanour).

  13. dodgy says:

There’s no need in my life to ever see a Reece Witherspoon movie, tbh.

    • Jayna says:

She was so good in Wild. The film had a much darker edge than I was expecting when looking back at her character’s life.

  14. perplexed says:

Both Reese and her daughter look fine to me.

    It’s Lake Bell’s outfit I don’t get.

  15. Jayna says:

Reese looks amazing in red with her skin tone and blonde hair. I think the dress and shoes are a nice ensemble on her.

  16. Sarah B says:

They always cross their legs like they have to tinkle.

  17. Velvet Elvis says:

Lake Bell…seriously thought that was Dakota Johnson.

  18. LA Elle says:

I want nothing better than a return of good rom coms, but I’m skipping Home Again. Or as I’ve taken to calling it: Nepotism Again.

The screenwriter is the 20-something daughter of Nancy Meyers. I get highlighting Nancy’s name in the ad campaign, but her daughter’s? No one knows who her daughter is! The only time screenwriters ever get mentioned is when they have successful films under their belt.

Here’s a wild-and-crazy thought: In addition to expanding opportunities for women in general in Hollywood, why not open the doors to those without famous parents and over the age of 30? I’m sorry, but I’m not inclined to believe a young, privileged woman can adequately capture the realities of a woman in her 40s with children and going through a divorce.

  19. serena says:

The movie seems cute but I wouldn’t have seen it anyway if it wasn’t for Micheal Sheen (YAY!).
