Page Six: Jesse Williams has been ‘seeing’ Minka Kelly since ‘last year’

BET and the NBA Players Association The Players Awards

A week ago, TMZ reported that Jesse Williams’ divorce was not some mature conscious uncoupling for two people who had spent a dozen years together. Allegedly, Jesse had started fooling around with Minka Kelly and no one was exactly positive when it started. Page Six has been digging around on this story too, and they had some sources - likely associated with Jesse’s now-estranged wife Aryn Drake-Lee – that Jesse is nothing more than a performative “woke” poseur who dumped his intelligent, educated (African-American) wife for a white woman. Well, Page Six has another story and now their sources are saying Jesse’s thing with Minka started last year.

Married “Grey’s Anatomy” star Jesse Williams and Derek Jeter’s ex Minka Kelly are “definitely seeing each other,” according to a source close to the actor.

“They started seeing each other last year. He ended things with his wife this year. He’ll be in Paris with Minka later this week. People know [about the relationship], but weren’t saying anything because he was still married,” the source said.

Kelly posted a photo of herself with Williams in France in January, but they have not publicly addressed claims that they’re seeing each other. Friends have accused Williams of trading his family for Hollywood fame since news broke that he is leaving his wife, Aryn Drake-Lee.

“He’s going to wake up and be like, ‘What did I do?’ He has two children. This isn’t Hollywood, where you can say ‘cut.’ [He and Minka] are in lust,” the source said. However, a source close to Williams insists that he only recently met Kelly while working on a video game in France — even though they appeared in the movie “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” together in 2013.

“They were both in the film, but never shot at the same time. They might have been at the same premiere event, but they never crossed paths. They only officially met when in France doing the video game,” the source said. “He’s been separated from Aryn since at least January. That’s when they were officially starting to deal with the process of it all.”

Williams is seeking joint custody of their children. An insider denied recent reports that he wants to withhold support.

“He doesn’t want the court to decide the alimony part of it — that doesn’t mean he’s not paying for child or spousal support. They’re working it out through mediation,” the insider said. The first source said, “Aryn is not at home crying. She’s educated and healthy. She’s continuing to spend time with her family and network of friends while building her name in the art world in LA.” Reps for Williams and Kelly would not comment. Aryn could not be reached.

[From Page Six]

My take on this is that Aryn’s friends are the ones convinced that Jesse and Minka started up last year, because Aryn has probably convinced herself of that. Personally, I have no idea and I’m not going to spend an hour going through all of the internet receipts and blind items. My gut tells me that a man doesn’t just decide one day to leave his wife and then a week later end up in a relationship with Minka Kelly. Like, of course there was some sort of affair. Maybe it wasn’t physical (eh) but… yeah. It’s like, what’s worse? The idea that Minka is a mistress or that she’s his jumpoff? She could be both.

I wonder how Shonda will kill his character.

    • kNY says:

OMG I laughed out loud. #truth

      Really!

      LOLOLOLOL

Please let it be a really embarrassing scenario which can be metaphorically read as poetic justice. He gets a STD which makes his dick shrink and then in an unrelated incident a sky anvil falls on him outside of Seattle Grace as he tries to flirt with a patient.

    • ElleBee says:

He will be killed by a car which is trying to avoid a crashing plane…

    • Originaltessa says:

Lol!!! Eaten by wolves has been done…
Maybe hit by a bus? Wait…

    • Adele Dazeem says:

Or like Dr Drake Ramoray and fall down an elevator shaft…

    • fiorucci says:

Shonda herself chose to be a single mom so why would she judge his relationship status? In htgawm she certainly explores multiple relationship dynamics I don’t thinks she’s simple like that.

      • Squiggisbig says:

That’s all well and good but:

        1) she already killed off dr. Shepherd, arguably the second most important character on the show, because the actor was cheating on his wife in real life.
        2) not sure that it follows that choosing to raise a child on your own makes you sympathetic to people who make commitments and then don’t keep them.

      • LA Elle says:

I don’t think its relationship status as much as Shonda seems to hold her actors to an expected level of behavior. It’s one of the things I admire about her. Now, if Jesse is still professional on set, doing his job, I do wonder if she’ll get rid of him – I don’t watch Grey’s Anatomy, but my understanding is some of the other actors let go over the years were having problems on set as well as off.

      • fiorucci says:

I haven’t watched the show or followed the drama closely, so thanks for sharing that, Katherine Heigl and a man who said something homophobic also come to mind. I guess when you have a big show for so many years you have to fire a lot of people. It seems pretty common to break up after having kids now. Like it’s not a shocking commitment break anymore. not sure if shonda has friends that are also single moms but at lot of them do choose to leave their partners, just like Jesse.

      • Bridget says:

I thought it was because Dempsey was kind of a d*&k. Like, to the point where he’s well known for it. Doesn’t anyone remember that the whole kerfuffle between Isaiah Washington and TR Knight was actually because Dempsey was late to set again, or something like that?

    • Char says:

      😂😂😂 Best comment!

  2. Tan says:

    Ugh!

Are there no decent man left?

    Marry the smart one
Let her support you when you are struggling

And the moment you find a leg to stand on

Dump her for the trophy arm candy

    • QueenB says:

“left” implies there used to be decent ones.

      • Ck says:

There are a ton of awesome men out there. It’s not fair that because a few guys get wrapped up in themselves, they all will.. I’ve dated losers and ended up marrying a smart, empathetic, loyal person, but when I was with D bags in the past, I knew what I was getting myself into. I just had to stop wanting to fix or change guys I lusted after, and be with someone who I loved and appreciated as he is.

Sorry, I just get irritated by that “nice guy” attitude no matter who says it.

    • GingerCrunch says:

Edit: Dump her – AND THE KIDS – for the trophy arm candy. Can’t cope when this happens and infants are involved. SAD

  3. Alp says:

Woah. So does that mean blind items are actually accurate?

    • LA Elle says:

Some are. I’ve always thought that there are a few that are wholly accurate while many more are false. All the fake ones help hide the legit ones.

I thought there might be something to this one from the start though – neither is a huge name, it’s a very random coupling, and there was a lot of very specific detail.

      • Squiggisbig says:

Blind items are accurate depending on the source and the people involved.

There will almost never be an accurate blind item on someone like Beyoncé or Angelina Jolie no matter how juicy it would be. Because people who have been A listers for a long time have top of the line people working for them and frequently only share intimate details with trusted family members.

Now something about two B listers that people are only marginally interested in? Might be true. I cannot even think of the last time I’ve thought of Minka before this.

  4. Skins says:

    What a surprise

  5. PIa says:

I doubt they met on set of The Butler.

There were sooo many stars in that film, I think everyone would shoot a lot of scenes separately.

Also. she was an OK Jackie-O, better than Holmes, not as good as my fav Jeanne Tripplehorn in Grey Gardens.

    • Blogdis says:

They may not have had scenes together but the cast usually promotes the movie together , there is a group pic of the entire cast including Jesse and Minka and there are online videos with the the entire cast doing the typical press Q & A
It’s hardly likely that they just chose not to speak to each at the events simply because they never shot scenes together ?

  6. JA says:

Typical douche bag. Hope his wife gets her fair share and then some. And who is he kidding, Minka will move on to the next dude who will raise her status. B listers don’t stay together long when one of em is known to jump ship for bigger names.

    • geekychick says:

I’m slightly bummed out that, when he’ll be 60, bloated and alone, he won’t be interesting enough to the press so that I can read his interview where he’ll be crying how stupid, selfish and shortsighted he was. Of course he cheated, of course he “traded” and of course I won’t ever, ever again watch another second of anything he’s in. (Yeah, I’m petty like that.;)

    • fiorucci says:

I agree, i don’t see them as a long term match at all. She seems high energy and ambitious and I don’t get that vibe from him. But I think her reputation (sexist as that is) will prevent her from landing what she wants and she’ll be with a rich dude but not a celebrated one.

    • Moneypenny says:

      He’ll wait for J. Lo’s next opening.

  7. annaloo. says:

    Shame.
    Shame.
    Shame.

  8. Jegede says:

She’s a terrible actress with a rota of flops, but I’ve always found Minka Kelly to be incredibly beautiful.

Minka Kelly, Mila Kunis, Alyssa Milano & Cheryl Cole are my only 4 when it comes to today’s brunette beauties.

But the messiness of her love life? Still at this stage………….?
I guess it just goes to show.

    • Kitten says:

Me too. You and I tend to have the same taste but yeah, she is REALLY gorgeous. I’m pretty sure she’s around my age too which is nuts because she looks 25 to me.

That being said, Team Aryn all the way.

    • geekychick says:

it’s always amazing to me how the beauty is in the eye of the beholder: she is incredibly youthful, but I just don’t find her kind of beauty anything special. I live in a country where girls like her are dime a dozen:really. On the other hand, she’s so similar to Leighton M., but her-I love and I admit that I find her body an example of how would I like to look.

    • Twink says:

Agreed. Her face is just stunning!

    • She’s giving me Demi Moore in that pic.

    • fiorucci says:

She is very gorgeous. I love leighton because I love GG and I see the resemblance but minka is even more stunning. Also I know some people working in Hollywood, they work hard and are talented but “flops” are common, whether tv or movie. She’s not the next Emma stone or anything but she is a successful actress, and she does have some education.

      • Jegede says:

I get that. I want to like Kelly

I don’t think Friday Nights Live came to the UK, but the Charlie’s Angel reboot did and just was awful. I saw the Room-mate (paid money for it!!) and she was pants too.

Seems Minka’s has never had a solo, or acclaimed hit in TV or movies, cause I would have definitely checked out something she did that resonated.

She would have been great as second banana in a superhero flick.
But HW is a crapshoot, money talks and at 36(?) the odds aren’t good for Minka.

Her beauty is still so luminous.
She would have looked great Franco Zeffirelli flick.

    • LA Elle says:

She’s pretty but it’s a very artificial pretty (like geekychick, I find her beauty to be very generic). Minka’s had a ton of work done. Look back to her early career (bonus: early career when she was the rumored other woman in breaking up Donald Faison’s first marriage) – she barely looks like the same person.

I’m not opposed to plastic surgery by any means, but given some of the negative comments that have been made about Aryn, I think it’s fair game to point out that Minka has paid a whole lot of money to look like that.

  9. Snowflake says:

Oh boy, it’s gonna get ugly in here……

  10. Margo S. says:

I have to say, that if he wasn’t happy in his marriage and met Minka and felt something really intense and special, then he should move on. He separated and is in the process of divorcing. Even if there was an emotional affair, he did the right thing by ending it with his wife. I know they have kids but staying together for the kids is never a good idea. Let both him and aryn move on and find love else where.

    • lobbit says:

You can’t help who you’re attracted to, but acting on that attraction is a choice – and if you’re married, it’s definitely not the right one.

If he was already unhappy in his marriage, then he should have left before allowing himself to develop “intense and special feelings” for another woman.

      • ell says:

and maybe he did just that? i don’t think there’s enough evidence that he had a year long affair, currently.

      • Anon says:

Personally, I wouldn’t want my husband to stay with me out of obligation.

      • lobbit says:

@Anon, marriage *is* an obligation. That’s just the way it is. And it may not be for everyone, but like it or not, it’s a commitment, and it’s hard work.

      • ell says:

lol no it’s not. we have divorce for a reason, and thank goodness for that! imagine the misery.

20 years together is a very long time, sometimes people change, fall out of love or both. luckily we can start over again and find other people, even the dumpees.

      • lobbit says:

“Obligation,” as defined by Webster’s Dictionary as “the condition of being morally or legally bound to do something.”

Yeah, that part of a wedding ceremony where you vow to be loyal and faithful in sickness and health and etc? Yeah, that’s an obligation–a promise, a commitment. When you get married you are accepting that you are obligated to that person. “Obligation” is the very definition of marriage. And like any obligation, it requires effort from all parties involved. If you can’t do the work anymore or you don’t want to do the work, then yeah, you get a divorce. But the existence of divorce doesn’t change the fundamentals of marriage.

        Um, obligatory lol: LOL

      • AreYouForReal? says:

Marriage is absolutely an obligation. You can’t yell “divorce” just because.. Newsflash: things get boring and tedious sometimes. People’s romantic ideas of marriage as unicorns and roses 24/7 crack me up.

  11. lobbit says:

Yikes. This is a man who seemed VERY committed to presenting himself as a self-aware, thoughtful, “enlightened” man of color, so it’s pretty wild that he’s allowed himself to fall into a hollywood cliche. How embarrassing.

    • teacakes says:

Exactly. Sure, you can’t help who you fall in love with but as the saying goes….. the optics of this are absolutely terrible. And even more so if he cheated!

    • Otaku Fairy says:

Still not sure about any of this messiness with Jesse/Aryn/Minka yet or what did or didn’t go down but I’ve never agreed with the idea that the way people of color and women handle relationships and fidelity has to automatically be politicized in a way that other people’s divorces and affairs aren’t.

      • lobbit says:

I get it – it’s unfair, but the reality here is that people of color and women live deeply politicized lives whether we want to or not. As a black woman, what I choose to do with my reproductive organs is a political issue. The health care I receive relative to women of other races is a political issue. What I am paid relative to other races is a political issue. The level of education I attain is a political issue, Platonic, professional, and romantic relationships are no different – and Jessie Williams is very aware of that…

      • Otaku Fairy says:

I get that reproductive rights, health care, and pay equity are all political issues, but sometimes people dating, divorcing, or cheating is really just that, and it’s not automatically a political statement on an entire group of people. I agree that people getting judged differently for the same behavior based on what boxes they check off is the reality. It’s just something that needs to be changed, and it’s not progress.

  12. Sigh... says:

I thought she was linked to one of the guys from “How I Met Your Mother” until a few of months ago? THAT would actually make more sense, seeing that this recent…whatever *this* is was 1st thought to have started a couple of months ago.

  13. PlaidSheets says:

    And… I’m done.

It’s amazing how much a messy personal life can muck up a professional image.

  14. Saks says:

Wait, he can be woke and a still leave his wife no? (It’s a serious question, please don’t attack me). I know that Minka being a beautiful white woman makes it cliché, but this thought crossed my mind bc what if all of this had happened with a black woman or from other minority? Like he can have a real political mind and be aware of social injustices and yet being a horrible husband

    • LA Elle says:

I think it’s complicated, Saks. For one, Jesse’s not just leaving his wife – he’s also a father of two toddlers.

I’m a huge fan of MLK’s – and I hate how distorted his legacy is – but there’s no doubt he was not great with women. I still have times reconciling some of his messages with his personal life. And he’s hardly alone – there are any number of famous social reformers who were absentee parents and spouses.

As for Jesse, the thing is – most of his reputation is from what he’s said, not what he’s done. A marriage breaking down has nothing to do with someone’s social or political beliefs – what does is how a person handles the end of a relationship, especially when there are children involved. In this case, it’s not a matter of him getting a divorce and six months later being seen with another woman. It’s that this supposed champion of black women seemed to have stepped out on his black wife for a woman – and a white woman at that. That indicates a lack of respect for his wife and also calls into question his statements – was he just saying them for good PR?

I also think this is happening at time when women, as a group, are becoming less and less OK with excusing men’s failings and chalking it up to “boys will be boys.”

Personally, I think there is something that the truth worth of anyone – man or woman – is in how they end a relationship. And Jesse leaves a lot wanting in that regard.

      • blogdis says:

        @ La Elle
I am a little bewildered by the race obsession after all his mother is white , He is half white and has never denied his white ancestry he is on record stating that he is biracial/ multi racial he even speaks to the privilege it has given him
Also his parents separated as a child and I remember seeing somewhere his “woke” father who he takes after apparently went on to another white woman . So apparently Jesses Dad is one of the socially conscious black men who “coincidentally ” only dates white women ( which is his choice ) so why would Jesse be any different ?
Where we do agree is the age of the kids involved and the way one decides to leave a relationship IMO says a lot about you . not a good look here

      • LA Elle says:

blogdis – I think part of the ‘race obsession’ is that Jesse does seem to identify more with his African American side than his white side and has been outspoken on social justice issues. His speech last year about black women earned him A LOT of goodwill among black women, so for him to then ditch his black (biracial?) wife for a cookie-cutter white girl … it makes him seem like a hypocrite.

And to add to that cavorting around and acting like a single guy while his wife is home with the kids? As an acquaintance said to me: It’s like he’s living some Southern fantasy of having fun with the Southern white belle while the black maid watches the kids.

  15. QQ says:

Q: what’s worse? The idea that Minka is a mistress or that she’s his jumpoff? She could be both.

A: Moving on from your ride or die to Minka Kelly is what’s worse (I Bet Beyonce wishes she had this line for Hold Up, in Hindsight)

    • detritus says:

I think jumpoff is way worse.
Its hard when you convince yourself that your partner values your drive and intelligence, and the next piece he picks is all hotness and no substance.
At least with cheating you can convince yourself he’s still a decent dude, just with a zipper problem.

The second makes you rethink your entire relationship.

      • Neens says:

You’d still considered a dude with a so-called “zipper problem” a decent person? Men have it so disgustingly easy.

  16. Mar says:

At the end of the day none of this is for us to judge. Another one bites the dust.
Would everyone like him more if he was dating a black girl?

    • Geekychick says:

      Yes.

    • blogdis says:

I am somewhat annoyed by the focus on the race of Jesses alleged mistress as it would have the same mess if he was dating a Lupita look alike ( and I am black )

I get it marriages fail but there is a way to move on IMO the real crime here is the alleged cheating regardless of the race of the fling and that there are two toddlers involved
Personally Jesse needs more people as apparently so a not to make him look like a cheat they are back dating the separation but this is worse as it means he left his wife with a then two year old and a newborn ?
Let’s be real there is no real coparenting from separate homes with kids that age , they wake in the middle of the night , need to be fed put to bed whilst you are trying to bath one , one is getting lotion on their hair etc. this needs two present parents

Since they had years together and didn’t break its not off to think perhaps the stress of parenting is A part of the toll on the marriage if that’s the case you work it out you don’t bolt with some Twinkie
Right or wrong people are seeking this as something that speaks to his character, integrity and decision making skills not just well you must stick it out in an unhappy marriage that is oversimplifying things
For someone supposedly so intelligent he handled this poorly

      • NewKay says:

If you don’t get the race issue then you are clearly not a black woman. Lainey’s website had a great blog on this.

      • Blogdis says:

        @Newkay
Well specifically I said I was ” annoyed , by the race issue especially as the man has a white mom but it’s good to know being black Woman all mylife that I am no longer one because I do not share a monolithic view on this issue . LOL

I notice from this and the other thread that people are conflating Jesses outspokenness on racial issues with him identying only with his black side.HE.Has. Never. Said. That .He is on the record multiple times stating he is bi/multi racial. Furthermore anyone , white , Asian or biracial etc. is capable of contributing to the discussion of racial injustice / white supremacy and the fact that Jesse used his platform to do so doesn’t make him any less biracial
IMHO, Some black people really need to get rid of this archaic JIm Crow ” one drop ” mentality or thier feelings will continue to get hurt , as most biracial people even if ” woke ” clearly have allegiances to BOTH sides of the heritage

And yes I get the whole ” When he get on he leaves your A$$ for a white girl ” but here the man has chosen what his own black father choose and what his white mom is, so to be focusing on race and not on how he allegedly dogged his wife and broke up a family with two toddlers to me seems misplaced .

Jesse is proving no different from all other famous ” pro black ” men who all eventually coincidentally have white spouses, Harry Belafonte , Sidney Poiter, James Earl Jones , Van Jones , Nate Parker , Kanye , Toure , Elridge Cleaver, Frederic Douglas , Henry Gates, Cornel West and I could go on ..No surprises here not for me anyway

      • geekychick says:

Blogdis, sorry but Jesus Christ, every comment you make is about he’s half white. He identifies as black. He said so himself numerous times. it doesn’t matter what color his mom is: he thinks of himself as black and black culture is his culture.
Yes, the grossest thing to me is that he cheated. then the fact that he had a lovely, competent, intelligent wife who went through thick and thin with him and he abandonded her first chance he got. the third thing is the fact that he obviously, emotionally or otherwise, sheated. the fourth is the fact that even 40 and more years after Harry Belafonte said to Eartha Kitt that he doesn’t want a black woman because black woman can’t raise his profile, a black man is once again choosing a white woman as more desirable AFTER a black woman helped him get where he is now.

      • blogdis says:

        @ geekychic
Well it is a fact that his mom is white why does that bother you ? As for your comment that Jesse thinks of himself as black ( Only ) and black is his culture ? when did he say that ? Or is that how You and others decided to see him? As whenever he speaks on his identity and being black in America, he almost always acknowledges his white heritage as well , and I have been taking note if him of him from he spoke up on Travonn Martin long before he blew up so to speak , and since then I have admired his activism but also seen him as biracial (the two are not mutually exclusive )

I am a black woman who does not believe In the one drop rule , who believes that biracial is a legitimate identity I am therefore a black woman who is not all in her feelings when a biracial man shows me his true self that he is also connected to his white side .Black men went through the same wailing and moaning over Halle Berry LOL

But don’t mind me , black people and others can continue to cling to the outdated one drop rule for dear life , they can continue to claim biracial people as black , ignore their other half , put them on pedestal and they will continue to cry these internet tears
Like I said. I get the historical and cultural significance of the angst but IMO the focus here is the wrong place

See below, one of many times Jesse has spoken of his identity
        http://thegrapevine.theroot.com/jesse-williams-discusses-biracial-privileges-and-social-1790887173

    • Neens says:

He put himself out there to be judged when he positioned himself as the face of woke America. His speech at the BET awards seems laughable now.

  17. Cherrypie says:

Is it Minka that is ex of Derek Jetter and Captain America?

    • LA Elle says:

Yep. And the rumor is she dumped Captain America for Derek Jeter but then went back to him after Jeter dumped her. There are also rumors that she was the other woman in the dissolution of Donald Faison’s first marriage.

Her personal life is kind of messy.

  18. Sandy says:

Minka is well known in Hollywood for dating actors to keep her career alive, it’s funny because the guys she dates always move on to marry other people, who takes her serious as a mate with her track record, he just dropped down from his wife, it won’t last, Jessie is too intelligent for this to be long term, didn’t you hear the reason he was with his wife, minka has none of that. He will regret this, maybe not now, but years from now, lust indeed.

  19. tracking says:

When you think about it, they’re well matched. Both very pretty faces with no real acting talent. I hope Aryn will find a good man who is loyal and appreciates her.

  20. Denny says:

you know what Dr. Phil says “If they will do it with you, they will do it to you”

  21. G says:

I don’t know much about him, but Minka is super shifty and how anyone can stand that baby voice of hers is beyond me.
