Did Charlize Theron gain a lot of weight for ‘Tully’ or is she wearing padding?

True story: I never watched Monster, the film that won Charlize Theron her one and only Oscar. I get that everyone was so impressed that such a famously beautiful woman would “ugly” herself up to play a serial killer, etc. But for my money, Charlize’s best films are North Country (she’s devastating in that) and Young Adult. It always pains me that Young Adult didn’t get the kind of critical love that it deserved, and I always thought that was because Charlize was (once again) brave enough to play such a thoroughly unlikeable character.

Young Adult was written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman. The trio (Reitman, Cody and Theron) have come together again for a film called Tully, which is filming in Vancouver right now. The plot of the movie is this: “Raising three children in the film, Charlize plays the main character Marlo who was gifted a night nanny by her brother, and to her surprise, formed a unique bond with the unique young nanny.” It’s believed that the young nanny is played by Mackenzie Davis. These are candid photos from the Vancouver set.

Do you notice anything odd or unconventional about the pics? According to the Daily Mail, Charlize has allegedly put on a significant amount of weight for this role. The DM theorizes that she could be wearing a prosthetic suit, but they think that option is unlikely. And I agree? I mean, some of this could be padding, I guess, but I think Charlize really did gain some weight for this role – you can see it on her face. I’m not sure how much it is, but it’s a noticeable amount of weight and it wouldn’t surprise me if she did decide to do a body-transformation for the role, just like she did for Monster.

Personally, I get tired of actors doing radical body transformations for film roles, but maybe I’m just tired of people doing the “weight loss” thing. Maybe I enjoy it more when beautiful, size-2 actresses spend a few months gorging on pizza and ice cream for their “craft.” We need more of this!

Neither weight transformations are healthy long term

  2. KittenTime says:

    Her boobs look ginormous!
It must be nice being tall….even if you gain weight, you still manage to carry it well.

    • susiecue says:

      True dat!

    • synnae says:

But annoyingly you need to lose at least 15 pounds for it to show on a taller frame :-(

    • Juls says:

I think she gained it. At her age, it could be difficult to lose it, although I’m sure she will get a personal trainer. I’m about her height and about this size, 34 years young, and I run 5 miles every day. Still pudgy though.

      • Coconut says:

Have you way down on carbs and sugar? I’m 52 and have lost almost a pound a week with no exercise regimen.

      • JudyK says:

@Coconut: More than 30 years ago, at the age of 32, I lost 13 pounds in only a few weeks by watching carbs with no exercise. I got down to 110 pounds and was told not to lose anymore weight. Wish I still had that problem.

      • qwerty says:

She’s not a hundred years old and unable to move. The calorie requirement for her age is really not that much smaller than for a 25 y.o. There is a difference but it’s not that significant.

    • V4Real says:

Her boobs are huge. She gained weight or padding in her bra unless she got a boob job. We all know Charlize chest is naturally small. I would say a small B-cup.

    • QQ says:

Hear Hear the Tall brigade! It’s sooo easy for weight to creep up, cause if you’re tall and Curvy?? a multitude of sins are really unseen (til the clothes come of!)

    • JudyK says:

Her boobs are HUGE, too big…when did that happen? I would not have recognized her.

      • mayamae says:

I’m tall and weight gain always shows immediately in my boobs. And I lose it there last. I’ve gotten down to borderline too thin twice, and never lost a full cup size. I hope Charlize doesn’t have the same problem. I’m a 34 DD, and I have no idea why women pay good money to be my size. I would happily be a B cup.

  3. Narak says:

Didn’t Peter O’toole eschew body transformation for roles saying “it’s called acting.”

  4. Megan says:

I think she must have gained – it’s not that much weight to bother with a fat suit.

    • Kenya says:

Could it be weight gain, ill fitting clothes and lack of spanx making it seem like she put on more than she has? I don’t think she looks bad she just doesn’t have the Hollywood extra to help her.

    • LoveIsBlynd says:

Her face shows it. I believe it’s real weight gain. Method.

  5. Capepopsie says:

    Definitely gained weight.

  6. Chinoiserie says:

If I was an actor I would like to do the body transformation thing once for the graft and for curiosity (and because awards potential…). But she has already done it with a huge success. But while the synopsis does not sound that interesting the team is high profile so I guess this project could be Oscar material. And twice in over a decade is not much, it is when you do it as often as Bale it seems crazy.

  7. Tough Cookie says:

I had a moment of excitement when I saw the movie title…I thought of one of my all-time favorite novels by that name written by Paullina Simons. And I also once had an Irish wolfhound named Tully. And Tully’s Coffee is one of my addictions. But all that aside this sounds like it might be pretty good.
And I too thought Young Adult was under-appreciated.

  8. MAP says:

I, too, am wearing body padding. That’s why I look like this.

  9. Snarky says:

I’m more of being tired of actors acting like the physical transformations are earth shattering. Some people gain and loose weight for work because they are chained to an office desk for 10 hours and don’t have the time to be healthy. And they aren’t paid millions for it afterwards. So shut up about the horrors of your ‘process’ already.

  10. EM says:

It’s a suit. Look at the last image and the leg area.

    • SM says:

That was my impresion also. The weight looks rather unaturally placed in the mid part of her body. And those boobs are not hers for sure. But then it seems that with the current trend of actors getting fat for the art someone may interpret the body suite as a lack of comitment so it’s risky. And the last thing – she is not the age she was when she did Monster it becomes more damaging to the health to do that when you are older and it deffinitely would/will be much harder to loose the weight.

      • Venus says:

Her weight is placed in the same way that mine is — I’m a classic “apple” shape with fine bones, so my arms and legs are fairly thin but I carry my weight in my stomach and boobs. And my wrists are teeny, just like hers.

      • Layla says:

Agree. Most models are apple shapes – Charlize included. Most women are not apples – and I think that’s why it looks so odd to people who are used to seeing the weight go to the hips and a$$,

    • Payapa says:

i too think it’s a suit mostly because her ‘fuller’ face is still not in proportion to her fuller body, and her arms look thin.

      • Mari says:

Look up some recent photos of her (not on set) from say July through August. It’s definitely weight gain, unless she started wearing a padded suit in her every day life. Hopefully she can lose it just as quickly. It looks like she gained fairly significantly, at least 20 lbs from what I can tell and in a pretty short amount of time, which can be devastating to your internal organs, ligaments, and joints.

    • Capepopsie says:

Well, sadly I’ve gained weight during the last six months, due to à
medical condition, and it looks à lot like hers!
      😒

      • Justjj says:

I think it’s a suit too. It looks funny around the knees in the bottom picture. If it’s not-good for her! I thought she was okay in Monster but the reason she won was 70% the physical transformation and 30% acting. I think she was great in Young Adult. That movie definitely didn’t get the attention it should have and dealt with subject matter that is little addressed in film.

  11. Neelyo says:

She was amazing in YOUNG ADULT but there was no way she would have gotten Oscar notice. She didn’t ugly herself up and wasn’t playing a historical figure.

By typical Academy standards, if you’re not doing either of those things you’re not acting.

    • kennedy says:

Not true. Rosamund Pike was nominated for a similar unlikeable female in Gone Girl. The issue is that Young Adult didn’t follow the traditional anti-hero arc – there was no redemptive portion which is what made the film AMAZING. Mavis Gary was an unlikeable figure through and through – which pissed off Academy members during a year where The Artist and Hugo were winning awards left and right. I mean… Albert Nobbs had an acting nomination which is a joke considering the movie is just shambles. Theron should have not only been nominated but won. Loved that movie.

      • mayamae says:

Rosamund Pike seems to have a reputation of being warm and sweet. Charlize seems to have a basic image of being cold and unpleasant. It’s not fair, but maybe some believed she was simply playing herself in Young Adult, and therefore didn’t deserve recognition.

  12. Pat says:

padding for the tits, real beer gut for the belly

  13. Azurea says:

Maybe it’s both. That way her face looks fuller, & she doesn’t need so much padding, so it looks more realistic….AND she doesn’t need to gain then lose so much.

  14. Tris says:

I think she looks amazing and relatable like this. She looks like a person instead of a Barbie.

  15. Jag says:

Is the movie about bad bras and too-tight undershirts? Because that’s what I’m getting from these pictures.

  16. bcgirl says:

I kind of…refused to see Monster for years too. I was never a fan and thought the role was just bait-y. I finally saw it last year and found out I was wrong about her / that Oscar. It was really one of the best performances I’ve seen. I will see Kaiser’s other 2 recommendations too now.

    • mayamae says:

She was great in The Burning Plain, where she played the older version of Jennifer Lawrence. She was a guilt filled self- harmer is and she made me cry.

  17. Betti says:

She is a good actress and deserves a least another Oscar nom, she has proved that she has the acting chops to do it. Fluctuating weight at the speed actors are expected to do it in is very unhealthy, didn’t Renee Zelwegger refused to put on weight for the new Bridget Jones movie? I know she said that losing it all again after filming the first 2 was really hard for her. Also didn’t Christian Bale almost make himself sick after quickly having to gain weight and muscle for the first Batman movie after he filmed the Machinist (where he was super thin).

    • manta says:

The problem for Bale is , that contrary to other actors who’ve done it once or twice in a career, his weight fluctuations for roles were extremes in a short period. For the roles you mentioned, but also for The Fighter and Rescue Dawn. He and Jeremy Davies were emaciated in that one.

I’ve always wondered how and if his organism recovered.

  18. manta says:

A personal favorite for me is her performance in The Burning Plain. And because I’m a huge James Gray fan, I’dd add The yards.
And her role in Young Adult didn’t have extreme physical transformation, didn’t display some tour de force monologues/hysterical yelling arguments or crying, so of course wouldn’t be on Oscar voters’ radar.

  19. kennedy says:

THANK YOU for pointing out that Young Adult is not only a FANTASTIC film but didn’t get the recognition it deserves. I just watched the fabulous show on Amazon called Flea Bag and it reminded me SO much of Young Adult. I believe it is Charlize Theron’s defining performance and one of the best anti-heroine films of all time. I LOVE IT!

  20. kimbers says:

That pic of her face looks like either make up or cheek addition to fill out her face

  21. Nibbi says:

i agree with everyone saying it’s a combo. she looks fuller around her face and neck but the boobs are def a bit much & she’s never been super “booby.”

have to admit it’s kind of nice seeing someone famous and gorgeous the way she is kinda looking… like me. like some extra here and there, kinda frumpy jeans, but nothing like grotesque or obese…

i wonder how long til her next red carpet appearance back to looking like a stunning ballerina again.

  22. CharlotteCharlotte says:

She looks gorgeous. I think this suits her.

  23. Susan says:

If she’s playing a mother of three, she looks appropriate, suit or no. Comfy mom bods unite!

  24. Rhianon says:

Those who are saying boob job… Some women really do put extra weight on their boobs; I’m one of them. Look at her abdomen- it’s fairly well hidden, but she’s put on a decent amount of weight, my guess is 30 lbs or so. When I gained 30 lbs, I went from a medium B-cup to a DD in no time. I also put weight on my lower abdomen and butt, like it looks like she did. I don’t feel she’s wearing padding or had surgery.

  25. Raoul Duke says:

What?!?! No shots of Mackenzie Davis???? She’s so adorable in “Halt and Catch Fire”!!!

  26. Londongal says:

She’s padded but she still looks gorgeous.
