Viola Davis in Marchesa at the Emmys: pageant realness or just bad?

Viola Davis is, no joke, one of my favorite people in the world. She arrived to the Emmys as last year’s Best Actress winner and a nominee again this year. She lost to Tatiana Maslany! Which is why I’m a little bit grateful that Viola’s Marchesa gown didn’t get more attention, because this is some pageant nonsense. I love you, Viola, but why are you doing this? YOU DESERVE BETTER. PS… I do love that her husband matched his bow tie to her dress though. That’s legit cute.

I’m struggling to understand why Emily Ratajkowski attended the Emmys this year. She didn’t present, she wasn’t nominated for anything, and I think she just came out to… attend. And be a clothes-hanger for Zac Posen. Posen attended too, as Emily’s date. Good for both of them, I guess, and I understand why Posen wanted this dress in particular to get some attention, because it’s striking and beautiful. But wouldn’t it have been great to see this dress on someone like Viola? I mean, really?

Olivia Culpo also wore Zac Posen. I actually really like this and I think she looks gorgeous.

Viola you remain the Queen, Marchesa remains the devil. 😉

Her husband is adorable in his bow tie.

    • V4Real says:

I’m not crazy about Viola’s dress but her face is absolutely beautiful.

Emily dress makes her look as if she has a small pouch and we know she does not.

      • SKF says:

I don’t love the crappy lace but my god this colour looks amazing on her and her makeup is perfect. Her face looks incredible!!

      • Pandy says:

Viola’s face looks beautiful but not a big fan of the dress. Emily looks haggard – she’s not doing that dress any favours. And I don’t like how structured the bottom half of Olivia’s dress is – it looks too square somehow.

    • Locke Lamora says:

Her face looks amazing. She is one of the most beautiful actresses out there, and that hair and makeup suits her perfectly.

As for the dress, the cut isn’t that bad, but the lace looks tacky and that is the ugliest colour known to mankind. Hands down.

Emily and Olivia look really good.

I’m 100% in agreement with you on this.

She’s one of the most gorgeous people period… actor or otherwise. That dress, though, isn’t doing her any favors.
The blue Posen is stunning; the confetti one is fun and pretty.

      • Janet R says:

I love the color (and her) but do not like darts that end like that.

    • MorningCoffee says:

Oh what an ugly dress. And she has Hathattits in it.

  2. Lucretia says:

I like Viola’s dress, but the matching bow tie screams “prom” and is a no. I once went through airport security behind their family — she’s even more beautiful in person. People in line were star struck.

    • Chinoiserie says:

Really? People were star struck? was under the impression many do not even know who she is. Well last time I talked about her to people not following film industry she was not in tv yet.

The matching bow tie is really prom like, maybe if the color was different for both like navy or something it would look better than this shade of pink.

      • Lucretia says:

There was a lot of whispering and pointing and “is it really her?” But she was also with her kids, and security, so people were also being respectful.

      • V4Real says:

Viola has done more TV than film. She started in television. She had a recurring role on this series called “City of Angels.” She made several appearances on the very popular “Law & Order SVU. She was on another series called Traveler and another called Century City. She has done miniseries as well.

As for films she was quite busy but wasn’t yet a household name. She became popular after her role in 2011 “The Help”. Even before then she was well known in as they say the Black community. A lot of people remember her for her small part in Out of Sight as Mosele. (A small bit of trivia. She has been in three movies with George Clooney). So yeah it is possible that people were star struck and may already knew who she was.

      • Bridget says:

She leads a Shonda Rimes show, for crying out loud.

  3. mia girl says:

Why did Emily Ratajkowski attend even though she wasn’t presenting, nominated, etc?
    Answer: THIRST

    • Kitten says:

I just LOL’d at the pics of her pose-harding the f*ck out of that red carpet as if she’s one of the noms.

    • Sugar says:

And the dress is hideous! Typical over-designed Zac Posen mess. Yuck

    • velourazure says:

The top of her dress looks like a vagina.

      • Snazzy says:

Yes! There is something strange happening at the top of the dress. Is there a stitch in between her boobs? How does that even make sense? It would have looked much better if it was seamless.

I really like Olivia Culpo’s dress. that’s some gorgeousness right there

      • Poisonous Lookalike says:

Yes! I couldn’t figure out why I didn’t like it, and you nailed it.

Love that color on Viola, would’ve loved a different dress for her in it.

      • Yup, Me says:

That would make me more inclined to wear it. The Emmy’s – featuring me in my Pu**y dress, made from deliciously touchable fabric.

    • MrsBPitt says:

      Can’t stand Emily….so, so, so thirsty…..

    • lucy2 says:

I don’t like the dress and there was ZERO reason for her to be there.

    • emilybyrd says:

Why does her dress pouch so unattractively at the stomach? That pouching effect is always what I want to avoid whenever I get into a dress!

And Zac Posen–the way he poses so intently for every picture. Methinks the guy really wishes he were a model….

  4. Aiobhan says:

I have no idea who Olivia is and don’t care enough to google her, but she looks really pretty here.

This Marchesa dress is not that bad. I love the color and how it pops against her skin. She should have worn a different wig though. This wig is dinner and drinks after work. She needs one for big galas like these types of award shows.

    Emily looks nice, I guess.

    • Chaine says:

I love the color too. The dress overall looks like an early 00′s bridal design, IMO, but it fits her beautifully, and I love that he wore a matching bow tie.

    • Yup, Me says:

Olivia is absolutely beautiful. But she has a big face and that hairstyle makes her head to body proportions look like when I used to push my Barbies’ heads down onto their necks and their faces got really large on a tiny neck.

  5. Esmom says:

As far as Marchesa goes, this is one of the least offensive. I think it looks great on Viola. Her makeup is lovely, too.

I laughed at how Emily and Zac are striking the exact same pose.

  6. Kitten says:

I actually don’t mind Viola’s dress at all, I just wish she didn’t match her lipstick to it.
Otherwise, her makeup and hair look fantastic and can we just talk about her arms for a second? Damn yo.

    • Eden75 says:

Every time I see her on How to Get Away and she is wearing short sleeves, I am blown away by her arms. How freaking amazing are they?? Makes me want to do push ups and tricep dips for hours.

I love her but the best thing ever was watching my hubby watch the Murder episode where she is with her mom and her mom is brushing out her hair, talking about what happened to the uncle. He knew who she was but had never seen her like that. She’s his new fav actress now. She is absolutely unbelievable.

      • Kitten says:

I haven’t seen the show yet but my parents watch it and they said Viola is a FORCE. They said her performance on the show was straight-up one of the best leading performances they’ve ever seen.

    • I Choose Me says:

Disagree. That lipstick shade is fantastic on her. I covet. And although I don’t love the dress, (something in the bodice area is off), the colour is bold and fun. And yeah, *looks at my own noodly arms* Viola and FLOTUS give me serious arm envy.

      • Kitten says:

It’s not that I don’t love the shade of the lipstick on her because I do, but it’s a pet peeve of mine when people match their cosmetics to their outfits. It’s just too cutesy and frankly, dated, for my likes.

Yet, scrolling back up to look at the series of pics, it’s ALL About Viola–the other women disappear. She’s not just beautiful, she’s positively magnetic.

  7. CornyBlue says:

I absolutely adore Viola’s dress and it makes me super super happy when dark skinned woman wear bright colours. From a small age I have been taught bright colours are for fairer epople and darker people should wear muted colours. F**k that bulls**t Viola!!
Also I am so sorry but Emily’s dress is a goddamn mess. What even is the upper part. She is super duper pretty tho and i love the turquoise makeup

    • Kori says:

I was going to post the same thing. I’ve always thought differently about bright colors though–that darker-skinned people just slay in them and they look somewhat cartoonish or beachy on fairer people. (Not always but sometimes). Darker-skinned actresses can rock brights and metallics–silver especially looks fabulous I think. But while this color looks great on her, just not a fan of the overall look.

  8. Jayna says:

I thought she rocked it. I loved that hot pink color against her skin tone. You could tell she felt extra beautiful in that gown. Some stars you can tell when they don’t and aren’t owning what they are wearing. Instead it’s wearing them. The gown was very flattering on Viola.

It’s a thumbs up from me.

  9. paolanqar says:

Emily Ratajwowski is just another one who is famous for doing nothing and having big boobs.
I am so tired of these shells of women who think that ‘empower and feminism’ mean getting naked at any given chance.

That dress is beautiful minus the bodice part. Wtf is happening on her boobs?

  10. Thisisnotyou says:

I hated both of Zac’s dresses on the RC. Emily’ Ratatouille’s looked like a Batman costume & Olivia Culpo’s dress looked like a lampshade from the waist down. If Michael Kors was judging these gowns on Project Runway he’d say “FLOP” for both of them.

  11. Ji-yun says:

Viola: Beautiful lady, beautiful color, awful dress.

I just had a weird realization that Emily Ratajkowski reminds me a little of Matt Bellamy (a modelesque, female version). I think it’s the distinctive nose/weak chin combination. Especially in profile. Once again, the dress is a gorgeous color.

Olivia Culpo looks like she was replaced by an Olivia Culpo robot. Something uncanny valley in those pics.

  12. sun says:

Marchesa is never a good idea

  13. Margo S. says:

I think for a curvy woman, violas dress is more flattering on her. The deep V is beautiful on larger breasted woman. Zac posens dresses will look OK on you if you have a pre teen body. The straight across top isn’t flattering if you have boobs….

  14. Michelina says:

Love Viola and her dress definitely could’ve been better. I think I’m the only one who didn’t like that Zac Posen dress Emily Ratawhatever was wearing. I never realized how petite Emily is. Olivia Culpo’s dress is giving off too many 17th century French/English for my taste. I’m not into whatever is going on in the hip area.

  15. Guesto says:

I love the colour on Viola. She looks absolutely radiant.

    But then, she always does.

  16. QQ says:

Husband Matching Her Is adorable, Her looking Like a Miss America Mall Pageant first heat contestant: Not Cute (beautiful makeup and styling though)

Zac Posen’s Dress Looks like a Fancy Napkin

Last Dress Coulda been Longer but its the winner in this bunch

  17. Pants says:

Sure, Viola’s dress is a bit pageant-y, but she rocks it.

  18. radio active says:

I really want a pic of Viola and Angela Bassett standing together. All that regalness!

  19. Timbuktu says:

I love Viola’s dress and am not fond of either of the Posen dresses.

  20. Applepie says:

If Emily’s dress was pink, the front would look like a vagina!!

  21. lucy2 says:

Viola’s dress is a bit pageant-y, but I love her so much I don’t care. She always looks confident and comfortable in whatever she is wearing. Definitely one of my favorite people too.
Olivia’s dress would be cute if it didn’t have the odd structure at the hips.

  22. Lucy says:

I don’t hate the blue Posen gown, but I don’t understand the weird chest detail/folding on the bodice.

  23. Bex says:

That pink is divine on her.

  24. I Choose Me says:

That second Zac Posen dress is beautiful and Ms. Culpo wears it well.

  25. Lexie says:

I went looking for fashion pics last night and this site Too Fab had Viola ID’d as Regina King. Grrrrrrrr.

  26. AG-UK says:

Is that Olivia Culpo or the City reality Olivia they look v similar.

  27. Josefina says:

It would’ve looked better in another color. The problem with hot pink is it often ends up looking quinceañera-like.

  28. Gaby says:

Viola is just gorgeous in spite of the dress. Emily looks ridiculous

  29. HK9 says:

Love the colour of Viola’s dress tho…

  30. Merritt says:

The Posen dress would have been amazing on Viola. Emily just looks boring.

  31. Me Three says:

Love Viola. Hate the dress. So happy Tatiana won…finally! If you haven’t watched Orphan Black you need to!
