Hilary Swank adds her engagement to the growing list of summer splits

Actress Hilary Swank and her professional tennis playing beau, Ruben Torres, have called off their engagement. This is the latest celebrity breakup on the heels of celebrity couples Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama and Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris – among others.

The 41-year-old Oscar winner and the tennis pro had been dating since July of 2015. They got engaged during a Palm Springs trip this March. It would have been the second marriage for Hilary, who was married to Chad Lowe from 1997 to 2007.

Hilary quietly removed her engagement announcement from social media and was photographed sans her diamond and emerald engagement ring at the 2016 French Open on Saturday. Hilary posted photos from the event on her Instagram page as well.

Hilary hasn’t stated why the relationship folded, but sources are implying that she wanted to devote her time and attention to her ailing father. She was recently quoted as saying,

I’m his sole caretaker right now. It’s a certain amount of time, but in a lifespan it’s a blink of an eye. There’s been job opportunities I’ve passed on, and things that I said I can’t, but really what we’re here for is our family.

There is nothing I want to do more other than being with my dad in this time of need. And if it wasn’t me taking care of him, I think I would always look back and regret that opportunity to be able to care of him and help him through this extraordinary time.

[From Daily Mail]

If that’s why she and Ruben broke up, that’s admirable. She seems to be holding up quite well, even posting an inspirational quote on Instagram that reads, “Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.” Sounds like she has made the right choice for herself. Good for you, Hilary.

That being said, there must be something in the water, huh? Even my boyfriend and I are “on a break” (and we all know what that means). Does true love still exist? Of course, this was another of those accelerated relationships, wasn’t it? Regardless, breakups suck and I wish nothing but the best for Hilary and her family.

Sorry to hear you’re on a break. I hate breaks. They feel horrible AND non-permanent and stressful. I’d rather break up to be honest.

  2. Katie says:

Being a caregiver isn’t for the weak. She’s wonderful for taking care of her father when she probably has the resources to pay someone else to do it. I work with caregivers everyday and I hope she has a support system for her own needs as her father’s disease progresses. She will need people to hold her up too.
    Bless her.

Totally agree. And sadly this is a subject not really talked about: the challenges of aging, not in the context of wrinkles/beauty, but in the context of how it can bring so many challenges and struggles to our lives and our families:/

  3. Miss S says:

I don’t want to be judgemental, but what kind of partner loves you and can’t handle family responsibilities? What about for better and for worse?
It seems that the relationship was a bit fickle to start with, no?

    • Snazzy says:

This is exactly what I thought
I would hope that in my relationship, if I found that I had to care for an ailing parent or whatever, my partner would do it with me, as opposed to having to break up so that I could do it. Otherwise, what kind of relationship is it?

    • Alix says:

A crappy partner, that’s who. Good riddance, I say.

Swank is a two-time Oscar winner and yet you virtually never hear about her. Does she ever work? Does she have money? Hope she can afford good help for her dad.

      • Miss S says:

Maybe she was the one who ended it, who knows, but on principle, yeah I would say he was a crappy partner.

I’ve seen photos of her on fashion/brand events I think, the sort of thing that looks paid. But it is actually something I wonder, why isn’t she working? I went to her imdb page and she had two films out in 2014, a tv series for 2017 (10 episodes) and one movie filming and another one where she is going to do voice work. But she is too discreet maybe? Nothing was that successful for us to remember I guess.

      • Bey says:

she took a huge hit after getting hired by a dictator. i dont know how it really works. JLo got away with it.

      • Bridget says:

She doesn’t work a ton because outside of a very narrow niche (hard scrabble parts) she really doesn’t sell.

    • Nic919 says:

Same thoughts here. I have a friend where she got closer to her boyfriend, now husband, because he really stepped up when her father was dying. Prior to that they had broken up many times, but since then they have been together and happily so for well over a decade.

If your significant other can’t be there for you when things like this happen, and it inevitably will because that is life, then they are a shitty life partner.

    • tealily says:

Yeah, better to find out sooner than later, I suppose. Although I do wonder if the two are even related.

  4. Rhiley says:

I lost a lot of respect for her when she took $$ from a war crimes president. I never liked Seal or Jean Claude Van Dam, but I did like HS. She handled that whole thing terribly and kind of came out the other side looking like a greedy liar. So while I can relate to what she is saying, I think there is more to the story.

  5. Snowflake says:

I don’t think the breakup is related to the taking care of her father. Who would have a problem with that? If it is, good riddance to him.

  6. Jag says:

Many of us thought it wouldn’t last due to the strange way – very standoffish – that they were kissing in their engagement photo. This doesn’t surprise me.

    I wish her dad well.

  7. Tourmaline says:

Wasn’t she is a pretty long term relationship with another guy right before this relatively short relationship with Ruben?

    • holly hobby says:

She was dating her manager. He had a wife and young child whom he left to be with her.

  8. Steph says:

Corey, I feel you! My ex and I tried to work it out for about 2-3months after he broke up with me and…it was so difficult. I’m sending you love and hugs from Austin!

  9. CarolinaBelle says:

Someone who can’t handle it when a loved one in your family is unwell is not likely to stick around when you yourself get sick–something that is inevitable for each and every one of us.

  10. neocleo says:

Lifelong relationships / marriages have gone the way of the Dodo I think. It makes me sad, but I’ve tried my entire life to have just one special relationship and at 60 years old, I’ve just given up. I’ve been married twice and been in 5 different long-term relationships. It’s just gotten exhausting. Right now I would settle for a decent roommate.

  11. LuckyZeGrand says:

Dammit ladies,I’m the biggest believer in love and all your stories are just making me wonder if in today’s age is possible to find true, everlasting love.
I’m still looking for our soulmate so any vote of confidence would be super good.

  12. Vv says:

Long time lurker here but yes this is the season of breakups. Sadly, im going thru one myself and it sucks. I’m only 31 but I am losing hope..

  13. Cali says:

This just makes me want to curl up and watch P.S. I Love You.

  14. Caz says:

It’s better to be single than be in a crappy relationship. Better to find out now than later and waste time, effort & $$$ on someone unsuitable.

  15. Amelia says:

My boyfriend just broke up with me last week after a year and a half together. Breakups suck, indeed! Hugs!
