Catherine Zeta-Jones: ‘Contrary to public opinion, I have not been under the knife’

CZJ cover

As we discussed last week, Catherine Zeta-Jones is back in action and promoting a new movie, Dad’s Army. It feels like we haven’t seen much of Catherine in years, and I was surprised when I covered the London premiere photos and saw that she looked pretty much the same. I wrote that “I think she’s been worked on, but it’s good, expensive, gradual work. The effect is that she looks somewhat hazy and ageless rather than radically different.” Well, as she’s been promoting the film, she’s been getting a lot of questions about plastic surgery and non-surgical procedures, and she’s been denying all of it. She claimed a few days ago that her “secret” is dousing her skin in argan oil. And she tells Good Housekeeping that she flat-out has “not been under the knife.” Some highlights from her Good Housekeeping interview:

On her 15-year wedding anniversary with Michael Douglas: “It was great. Just the two of us at one of our favourite restaurants, laughing that we haven’t killed each other yet – and that we are still alive! Fifteen years is a long time. You’ve got to keep the home fires burning! It’s a long road and I think people today are so quick to throw in the towel on marriage. You have to give it your best shot and not give up when the first problem arises, because that won’t be the last problem. There will be many more down the road.”

Her bipolar disorder diagnosis: “Finding out that it was called something was the best thing that ever happened to me! The fact that there was a name for my emotions and that a professional could talk me through my symptoms was very liberating. There are amazing highs and very low lows. My goal is to be consistently in the middle. I’m in a very good place right now. A lot of that is to do with the fact that I’m much more knowledgeable about what I call my pain in the ass!”

On getting older (she’s “46”): “You don’t have to be a beauty queen to be an actress. The roles that are coming my way are different and more interesting. But I’m not anti-plastic surgery at all. Contrary to public opinion, I have not been under the knife…yet, is what I say! If I feel like it, I’m going to go ahead and do it! If (surgery) makes you feel better, who am I to tell someone that it’s wrong?”

[From Good Housekeeping UK]

You know what surprised me? That after Catherine and Michael separated and told the world that their marriage was struggling, they found a way to repair their relationship and they’re still sticking with it. I think they truly surprised a lot of their early detractors and they’re in it for the long haul now. And maybe that’s what Catherine means when “people today are so quick to throw in the towel on marriage.” As for her claim that she hasn’t been tweaked by a plastic surgeon… okay. If she says so. I think it’s debatable whether she’s had surgery on her face (it might just be Botox and fillers), but you know what’s not up for debate? Her boob job.

LOL!! Right, another celebrity liar. Google some before and afters … for starters she’s had a boob job. Gawd they’re such shameless liars!!

    • Lama Bean says:

Whoa. I forgot how stunning she was. She’s fine now, but you’re right. No doubt she’s had some work. Maybe not under the knife but under the needle, scissors, scalpel, whatevs.

    • Belle Epoch says:

Pants on fire! She had something done under her eyes years ago. There was an article about how particular she is.

  2. QQ says:

what about under the needle?? The Laser? Over the Zerona or whatevs?? It’s fine girl, Cop out to whatever it is you do!

    • Christin says:

Needle came to mind as well! I noticed some marionette lines or plumper cheek apples in recent pics (not these, which appear to have been filtered and ‘shopped to high heavens).

  3. LAK says:

Perhaps not recently, but I do recall the his and hers ‘refresh’ they had for their wedding. Hers was eyebags.

    • raincoaster says:

Roger that. I thought I was the only one. I think it was the Enquirer that had a cover photo of Michael with the bandages in front of his ears covering the lift scars.

She is gorgeous, has always been gorgeous, but she should really just say “yeah, I got these for my career, and I had those removed for my career, and that’s how it is.” The only part of the movie Notting Hill that I liked was when Julia’s character said she’d had a nose job and a chin implant for her career. Just admit it. And don’t pretend you don’t smoke too. Kate Hudson I’m looking at you.

  4. Jayna says:

They always say “haven’t gone under the knife.” Well, I bet Nicole Kidman hasn’t either, but that didn’t stop her for years messing up her face with overuse of fillers and botox and lip injections that blew her lips up to the trout pout. She was unrecognizable, but, hey, she could say, like all the others, I haven’t gone under the knife. LOL The same with Meg Ryan.

    • msd says:

You don’t really need to “go under the knife” to get work done nowadays, cosmetic procedures have advanced a lot and becomes less extreme and invasive, so I think her denial is just a matter of semantics really.

  5. SJO says:

No way in hell she is only 46. She looks great, but she looks over 50 to me.

    • LAK says:

British celebrities can’t lie about their ages.

We have statutory birth registry that requires registry within 42days of the birth. Further, it links family members. Simple check on that will show their real ages.

      And it’s publicly available.

    • Ethelreda says:

I agree. I’m her age and think she looks mid 50s.

That said, I don’t think she’s lying about her age. She’s just one of those people who have always looked ‘mature’ for their years.

      • Christin says:

Mature looking is a good description. Many years ago, some claimed she ‘had’ to be older. To me, she has always looked up to 5 years older than what she really is. I think part of it is her styling.

    • Holmes says:

Her age is easily verifiable. Births in the UK are public record. Even if she was somehow able to fudge that (which she wouldn’t be), she’s been famous in the UK since she was a child. She’d have had to start lying about her age when she was about 10-years-old.

    • dAsh says:

This. I think she looks great but she looks older than 46 for sure.

    • SamiHami says:

Once again, she cannot lie about her age. She was a child star in England. Her age is very well documented and she couldn’t lie about it if she wanted to. She is, in fact, 46.

      • SJO says:

Ok. Point taken. I am older than she is, I look younger. So do many of the women I know at her age. I agree she may just be one of those people who always looks more mature than her age. Its Hollywood so I have always assumed she was lying.

    • erika1985 says:

Not sure where you all live but most women in their 40s don’t look like this. Is there some instantly recognizable change that occurs when one hits 50? I do not believe so.

  6. CLINIQUA says:

    Oh stop it Catherine.

She had so much filler a couple years back, her mouth resembled donald ducks and her pug nose was on her forehead – she looked weird. I also heard she had an eyelid tweaking many years ago to Jack up her hooded lids, in fact the tabloids caught her coming out of her surgeon’s with a big ol head wrap towel thing covering her face. She started early, like mid thirties.

Surgery aside that we know she’s had…

I loathe this parsing of the words where women who have a liter of injectibles in their head, claim they ‘haven’t had anything done.’ Please take a seat Zeta Jones.

Also…how could she ‘bash plastic surgery,’ when her husband has had at least 3 lifts and more and even went out proudly showing his stitches.

    • chelsea says:

So maybe the reason she “looks mature” is long-term tweaking? That I would believe.

      • CLINIQUA says:

Yes, I think if anything, the reason she looks much better today is that, like Kidman, she’s declared a moratorium – maybe her bipolarism led her to do unnecessary things to her face.

If you Google, the tabloids and mags were all over her for getting a blepharasty (sp?) the procedure Renee Zellwegger had last year. Jones had it done when she was 31, and it’s sucking the fat out of heavy lidded or hooded eyes. They caught her coming out of her surgeons.

      • LAK says:

Cliniqua: I remember she had this eye surgery in time for her wedding.

Ditto Michael who went in for a refresher something to tighten his face.

  7. Ethelreda says:

Why do they lie? Same with Christie Brinkley telling us it’s all down to ‘drinking lots of water’ or whatever. It’s painfully obvious CZJ has had work done – she could barely move her face on the Graham Norton Show last week. Obviously she’s been reading the press and doesn’t like what they’re saying about her, but does she seriously think anyone is going to believe what she says rather than the evidence of their own eyes?

    • Boston Green Eyes says:

IKR? Why do they feel to outright, blatantly lie when they’ve had all sorts of things done?

To play the devil’s advocate tho – what can they say? “Oh yeah, I’ve been under the knife so much you might as well call me a plate!” Seriously, they are sort of stuck between a rock and a hard place – especially when no one else admits to the surgeries, either.

      I guess it’s a no win situation.

      • Ethelreda says:

But do interviewers flat out ask celebs if they’ve had work done? It doesn’t seem the case in this interview, at any rate. Catherine seems to be just freely offering the (mis) information. Like I say, I reckon she’s stung by all the talk of her immobile face. I think it’s just that so many celebs are extremely vain and can’t stand the thought of people knowing that their look is at least partly due to the surgeon’s skill. That’s why they’re so defensive about it.

    • Snowflake says:

Ikr?! Why can’t they just say I’ve got a great doctor or dermatologist. At least acknowledge you’ve done something. We have eyes, yes!

    • Pandy says:

I read Christies book. She says she uses lasers and fillers on her face. She says she doesnt like Botox on her face but she uses it on her neck to tighten it. And she’s very disciplined about her diet and exercise (she’s vegan). I believe her. She’s owning it.

      • Jaded says:

Both Christie and her daughter had major cosmetic surgery together about 5 years ago. Daughter had rhinoplasty and possibly some chin work. Christie got a total face lift and was quite honest about it in the media. She said that was it for her, and would rely henceforth on non-surgical ways to stave off old age.

  8. minx says:

    Nose job, among other things.
We have eyes, we can see the difference.

    • Sugar says:

Yes, she definitely had a nose job. Her nose used to be much wider. Still, it’s ridiculous that female celebrities have to discuss their plastic surgery. No one asks Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise about their (very good) face lifts.

  9. paolanqar says:

Catherine Zeta Jones and JLo have the best plastic surgeons out there.
They look a million times better and younger than when they started their career in the showbusiness.
Their faces are mesmerising. I find JLo’ obsession with over-lining her lips ridicolous but she is incredibly beautiful anyway.

  10. BengalCat2000 says:

Slightly ot but I like what she said about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. This illness cannot be discussed enough.

  11. Robin says:

Maybe she means an actual kitchen knife. Cuz she’s definitely had work done with a scalpel or five.

  12. holly hobby says:

Yup she has had work done. Not overly done but done. I saw the Mask of Zorro a few nights ago and she was stunning. Yes she was younger but if she did not fool around with her face, I bet she still would have looked stunning.

She started looking different after she married Douglas and they had his and her procedures (that was reported by the press).

  13. Grant says:

I just watched Side Effects on Netflix and she was really great in it.

  14. TrixC says:

Since the context is about ageing, I think she’s talking about not having had facial procedures to look younger. I suspect she’s not counting the boob job or nose job, things she had earlier in her career.

  15. lizzie says:

my bff is a trainer in NYC and CZJ goes to his gym. he said it was months before he recognized it was her (someone had to tell him) because she is unassuming and comes and goes quietly. he doesn’t know anything about celebs so i asked how old she looked. he would guess early 40′s based on her face with no makeup. he also said she is really really thin. i would guess she’s experimented with fillers but i don’t think she ever looked young. i watched high fidelity last weekend and she looked about 100 next to john cusack and they were both in their 30′s at the time.

  16. Sarah01 says:

Why lie, I mean it’s obvious she’s had work done. Just don’t say anything if your not going to own it. She does look older than age I thought she was in her mid 50′s.
I’m happy she’s shedding light on mental illness and shes in a great place.

  17. Dinah says:

Smoking, tanning and drinking destroy anyone’s looks. I’m still stunned at how old and graven George Clooney and Colin Farrell are. The decline is sad and steady, but most bring it upon themselves with their choice of lifestyle. After 40, your body gets you back for every naughty thing. As well it should.

  18. Brasileira says:

Ok, hun. We all believe you (just not at all). Now, take a sit, please.
