Justin Bieber was a good kid: ‘I finished high school with a 4.0 GPA’

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber appears in a feature for Interview magazine, and the shoot is so bizarre. Bieber licks a knife and puts on a few masks, including a scary clown. You can see the photos here. Martha Stewart does the interview, and I guess they’re tight now after Bieber’s Comedy Central roast. Interview mag features usually contain a whole lot of conversational fluff with few relevant details, but there’s a few zingers here.

Bieber talks about how he met his man-child of a manager, Scooter Braun, who his mom thought was “creepy” at first. Braun also manages Ariana Grande, which is telling. Ariana’s recent behavior reminds me of how petulant Bieber used to act before he started pulling dangerous stunts like drag racing and driving on sidewalks. Scooter would vehemently defend Swaggy but also admitted the kid made him lose sleep. Here’s some excerpts:

On meeting Scooter: “He kind of stalked me, basically. He got in touch with a lot of people in Stratford because he couldn’t get in touch with me. My mom’s last name is Mallette, and my last name is Bieber, so he contacted my great aunt, who I’d never met before. He contacted the school board. My mom was getting all these messages saying, “This guy named Scooter is trying to get in touch with you.” After a while, it got kind of creepy to my mom, so she finally gave him a call to tell him to stop calling. She ended up talking to him for about two hours. They kept in touch, and we eventually made a trip out to Atlanta to see what he’s about and to see what kind of connections he could get.No, I never really dreamed of it. I didn’t know about anything like that. So when Scooter was contacting us, I started to think, like, “Wow, this could actually be my life. I could actually do this for a living and make music and travel the world.” So that’s when I started getting excited. And when I moved down to Atlanta, I met Usher.”

Did he drop out of high school? “I finished high school with a 4.0 GPA.”

His upcoming music: “The new album’s going really well. I’m working a lot with Skrillex and Diplo and this guy named Poo Bear, who’s an incredible writer. It’s just very personal. People will be able to really get in to where my heart is. It’s about my journey in life — stuff that I’ve been through. Maybe I can teach a lesson, certain things that are inspiring.”

Swaggy took a moment to declare himself “single” but adds that he loves cooking breakfast for a girl. Oh, and his drink of choice is 1942 tequila. I think those details are supposed to make him sound grown up. We’re also supposed to be impressed by the 4.0 high school G.P.A., but Bieber was privately tutored. He didn’t duke it out with other kids on a sliding curve grade scale.

Here’s an artsy-fartsy video of Bieber’s new collaboration with Skrillex, “Where Are U Now.”

Bieber just because you had a high GPA doesn’t distract from you being an arse. Some of the smartest people around can still be Aholes.

I bet if a lot of students could afford a private tutor their GPA could be just as high. It’s easy to learn when it’s one on one and all the attention is focused on you.

Bieber was home schooled through high school. All this means is that his mom, or his tutor, was an easy grader. (Which isn’t to say there aren’t plenty of bright and hard working home schooled teens out there, but I’m not buying these claims from someone who’s given so little indication of intelligence or diligence.)

But nice try with the rebranding, Biebs.

Exactly! And god knows what kind of bizarre home-schooling she did. Probably the same one the Duggars use!

I’m pretty sure any formal education he had stopped when he was in 7th grade.

    • lucy2 says:

Exactly. Whoever was tutoring him probably couldn’t wait to be done and just said he earned all A’s.

  3. Snowflake says:

Oh okay, so now since that whole gangster thing didn’t work out, now he’s reverting back to the good boy routine. Quite smart, prefacing it with the apology tour.

  4. BooBooLaRue says:

4.0? Is that IQ or GPA?

  5. FLORC says:

Private tudor on the road and maybe lower the bar a bit to improve overall numbers. I wonder if it was more of a GED style standard?
His grasp on the english language. Word definitions. Math. Science. History… I doubt his 4.0 is greater than my 3.84 for HS.

  6. Lynnie says:

Everyone finishes high school with a 4.0 gpa… and a billion volunteer hours, a perfect score on the SAT/ACT, discovering the secret to world peace…

A 4.0 gpa isn’t special anymore. Especially if you can take classes like P.E and fishing and end up with the same gpa as the kid taking 4 APs.

    • Chibichchai says:

I was about to say a 4.0 is not that hard to get when you’re not graded against others, taking honors or AP courses. He may not have had homework either.

  7. Greata says:

It is way too early for Bieber and his tool mentor’s horsesh*t.

  8. Vampi says:

Hahahahaha! The boy can’t even spell properly and he’s claiming a 4.0?!! I think all this re-branding is hilarious! The only ones that might buy it are the 13 and under set.
Poor Swaggy. If we replace your binky with a big boy sippy cup will you please go away?
Whar that car seat pic of him? Whar??? Lol

  9. Tiffany says:

That comment about Scooter reads like dips*it and his mom are trying to get rid of him.

She has already mentioned that she had an issue with him being Jewish.

  10. Mop top says:

There is nobody who can convince me that this child could write a cohesive paper on, say, some aspect of world history. Conjugate some verbs? Solve for x or y? Nope.

    • Vampi says:

but..but…he knew all about the “Sixteenth Chapel”
      4.0 my flat butt!! Lol!

  11. frivolity says:

As if we needed any more evidence for the epidemic of grade inflation!

  12. thaisajs says:

I’d need to see the transcript to believe that one.

  13. lucy2 says:

“Skrillex and Diplo and this guy named Poo Bear, who’s an incredible writer”
    What….? I mean…what?

  14. grumpycat says:

I knew his tutor. You won’t believe this but she said she found the job on Craigslist in Atlanta. She was a professional tutor. She got to travel all over the world with him. I remember her saying he was a bad student and was never available for lessons and none of his keepers would force him into it. I believe she stopped in 2011.
