Jennifer Lawrence vs. Elizabeth Banks in London: who looked best?

Jennifer Lawrence

The worldwide premiere of Mockingjay: Part I happened in London last night. Jennifer Lawrence wore three white outfits over the past few days. The Dorito dust must have taken a brief hiatus. I apologize for overstuffing this post. We’ve got all of the ladies at the premiere and photocall. Plus a few after party dresses. The poor dudes got relegated into the gallery. Josh Hutcherson looks adorable as always, and Sam Claflin either fell prey to wind or Rave hairspray. I don’t know what’s up with Liam Hemsworth’s grooming habits. (Beard, yes. Hair, no.) Oh, and Jennifer told Us Weekly that Josh and Liam were “my angels, my kittens.” Huh.

JLaw has strep throat but toughed it out to promote like crazy. She looked gorgeous in her white Dior premiere dress with a light blue undertone. What do you think of this Dior? It’s better than most of their designs for her. I’m conflicted. The cut of the dress is beautiful. Even the mullety effect can’t take away from the elegant silhouette and slight bustle (see gallery) in the back. The quilted fabric is another story and cheapens the overall vibe of the dress. Jennifer’s makeup game continues improving though. Thank goodness.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer changed into this Mugler dress for the after party. BAM. Slinky and sexy.

Elizabeth Banks wore a dress that Effie Trinket would adore. This Elie Saab couture gown is humongous. There’s just so much fabric, but the gown is so over the top that it works. I love how the floral print of the top melts into the watery colors of the skirt. The cape effect in the back is magnificent. All those embellishments? Delicious.

Elizabeth changed into a crinkly pink frock for the afterparty. Another win.

Natalie Dormer tried valiantly to own this Nicholas Oakwell gown. The dress was a little too busy, but it was fun. If the skirt was solid black instead of revealing a blue underlay, maybe it would have looked better. Nat’s edgy hairstyle (from the side) scores a few points, as does her best accessory: the smirk.

Jena Malone wore a springlike Emilia Wickstead two-piecer with a white bodysuit and a canary yellow wraparound skirt. The runway version reveals the illusion of underwear peeking through the skirt. Jenna’s droopy neckline is by her own design. Not my fave look.

Jena Malone

Julianne Moore wore little black Balenciaga dress with all sorts of sheer paneling and latticework. This isn’t a terribly exciting look, but it’s much better than most of Julianne’s red carpet ensembles.

Jennifer looks amazing in white, LOVE THE SUIT! Channeling Bianca Jagger, so chic.

The dress is okay, she looks amazing, but I hate mullet hems so I just wish I could cut off the back.

    • Nur says:

Yea, me too! But my real issue is with her strappy sandals. Her toes always look so funny in strappy sandals. I just wish she would stop wearing them.

      • bella says:

        +1 on the feet.
and i say this with empathy – my feet are the worst.
she shouldn’t wear this open sandle ever.
her toes/feet aren’t suited for them.
she needs to wear a style that contains those piggies…

    • lucy2 says:

Yeah, the mullet hemline ruins it for me, otherwise I like the dress. And I agree the suit is great.

    • Charlie says:

How tall are Jennifer and Natalie? I mean, Jennifer is listed as 1,75 and Natalie as 1,68 yet here they look like they’re exactly the same height.

      • Lex says:

Natalie’s hair is poofed up and you can’t see the height of Jennifer’s heels…

Also, they rarely get the heights correct for actors or celebrities. Weren’t some websites still hilariously trying to claim Tom Cruise was about 5″10?

      • Charlie says:

In the pictures from the premiere she seems to be the same height as Elizabeth Banks who is listed as 1,64. And they are wearing heels of a similar height. This is so confusing.

      • Etheldreda says:

Seven centimetres isn’t a huge height difference. It could easily be fudged by different shoe heights, hair styles, camera angles, posture, etc. Plus, I always take Hollywood stars’ heights with a pinch of salt. They often claim to be taller than they really are.

  2. Lb says:

I’m sorry to disagree but J Laws makeup here makes it look like she had Botox. I think it’s terrible.

I loved Elizabeth Banks’ caped dress.

    • Brown says:

I agree, her face looks very off here to me.aybr it’s the strep throat.

    • Milena says:

It’s her white eyeshadow! Not a good look at all.

      • bogati says:

Her eyes, the shape of them and the lids demand a smokey eye. She tried to ‘open’ her eye with white/light shadow and it didn’t work.

      • Chris2 says:

Exactly….it’s contrary to all we are told about light = larger, dark= smaller, but here’s an example that really reverses that dictum. Same for me…it just does me no favours and makes my eyes disappear. :(

    • Goats on the Roof says:

It’s not the best her makeup has looked (way too much concealer IMO) but I think that’s because she’s ill.

    • Christo says:

I totally agree. It almost looks like Jennifer Lawrence and Renee Zellweger have exchanged faces. That white makeup around her eyes actually makes her eyes looks smaller and squinty like a clinched fist as opposed to opening up her eyes with darker eye make-up.

    • Adrien says:

She looks bloated. Her eyes are teary, so yeah, agree, she’s ill.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I think Elizabeth Banks looks amazing, she owned it.

JLAW looks great too in white, but her makeup is not great… ,the heavy rimmed eyes meh..

    • FLORC says:

Banks styling is bad. And she’s usually a win. She’s running on goodwill here.
JLaw looks great. And she’s hot and miss.

  3. paola says:

This shoving JLaw down our throats every single day is getting out of hand and very annoying.
I honestly don’t see the hype in this girl. I am puzzled because i really can’t see it.
Her dress is horrible and the shoes look even worse. Her feet keep trying to escape. They look really uncomfortable.
I love Elizabeth Banks’ dress.. she looks great in it.
And Natalie Dormer.. I would pick her anytime instead of JLaw. She really is a badass.

    • pretty says:

you can’t see it? you are puzzled? LOL how edgy.

she won an Oscar. she plays a character from best selling book series, Catching Fire grossed more domestically than Iron freaking Man 3. Does this still puzzle you? I’m more concerned on you then.

      • paola says:

Winning an Oscar doesn’t mean she is a great actress. I can give you an endless list of people who won awards and never really deserving them. Or other way around: many deserving people who have never won an Oscar.
Gary Oldman? Julianne Moore? Glenn Close? Annette Bening? Sigourney Weaver? Liam Neeson? Ralph Fiennes?

The Oscars are all about who has the best campaign, popularity and very little about actual talent.
JLaw isjust a normal girl with a great PR team. Nothing exceptional about her apart from the people who work for her.

      • Luciana says:

I’m with Paola. Reese “American Citizen” Whiterspoon has an Oscar and she’s far from being a great actress. Decent actress? Maybe.

      • Catie says:

This “she has an Oscar so she’s the best” and “do you have one, loser” arguments of her stans are completely out of control. Though the best one is” “jealous much?”. If somebody deserved this Oscar it was her PR team (like in many other cases it’s thanks to publicity and nit the actual talent).

      • pretty says:

haahaha, i said she won an oscar in response to your “i’m so puzzled why she’s getting shoved down our throat” comment. she won a freaking oscar. that is why she’s getting shoved down your throat. she is the star of a huge movie franchise. that is why she is everywhere. who said anything about her acting skills?

      • Jbap says:

Every time J-Law appears on this board, someone pops up to say she’s over-hyped and over-rated as an actress, even as the rave reviews from critics and peers build up and she gives one top-drawer performance after another. ( I see she’s getting more stellar reviews for Mockingjay, even if the film is getting some mixed ratings.) Of course, what counts as good acting is always an subjective matter: but I’m curious as to how long her critics will keep on slagging her off as the evidence of her talent grows and grows with each passing film.

She is looking very classy in those photos, by the way – she’s moving upmarket in her look, and pulling off the transition well.

    • whatsmyname? says:

How is she getting shoved down your throat unless you’re reading everything about her? It’s easier to just move on if you don’t see it because you won’t, I feel the same about certain people. I realized it’s just easier to leave it at that.
I have a hard time properly articulating myself in english sorry if I don’t make any sense :p

      • Liz says:

Honestly if you take time to read an article and then add a comment about any actor or actress, you cannot then claim that PR is shoving that person down your throat. You choose how to spend your time or waste it if it’s someone you dislike.

    • bogati says:

In that last more casual group shot of the women, with Jlaw in a white pant suit, and Moore in the blue dress, you really can’t tell who’s the 24 yr old and who’s the 53 yr old. That’s no slam on Lawrence it just speaks to how slammin Moore and Banks are.

I’ll never understand why trolls like Aniston get back slaps for looking barely passable when there are actual true beauties in Hollywood her age and older that slay, and do it seemingly naturally. It’s that ‘attagirl,’ sympathy factor she’ll get from now and until because of you know what and you know who I guess.

      • Sullivan says:

Yes, Julianne and Elizabeth look wonderful. Aniston and her p.r. team have been ramming her ‘ageless beauty’ down our throats for years. Meanwhile, Julianne just goes about her business and doesn’t ever try to convince us she’s beautiful and aging well.

    • Josephine says:

She’s promoting a movie, and a blockbuster at that. I also disagree about her acting skills, and so does Hollywood. She is in high demand by directors. She was amazing in Winter’s Bones and has played a variety of characters since then.

I don’t love her “I’m more like a dude schtick” but I do enjoy her evolving style. She doesn’t look fake, and she doesn’t look like an oversexed barbie doll.

    • lucy2 says:

She’s the star of a HUGE franchise. Of course she’s going to promote it and be in the public eye for a bit while she does.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

I don’t really get the hype with her either, I don’t think she’s beautiful like some of her fans rave she is , but she is a good actress and she sells tickets to movies ,so the studios will continue to work /promote their hot commodity.

  4. Splinter says:

Elizabeth Banks has an amazing dress!! Looks stunning and can be used as a tent as well. Win-win

  5. Nya says:

Jennifer looks like a Real Housewife. Elizabeth looks amazing.

    • Esmom says:

She does somehow look older and harder than she should from some angles. Elizabeth in the Elie Saab is just stunning from head to toe.

    • bettyrose says:

      Julianne Moore FTW!!

      • Chris2 says:

Yep! I like JM in black ( and this is spot on, not ‘gowny’)
I think the classic redhead/porcelain skin combination is always chic with black, while the traditional green makes me think of those ‘Colleen’ dolls at Shannon airport!
One thing about Moore though is her predilection for spindly sandals. I’d love a substantial block-heeled court, preferably with a round toe and slight platform, just a bit edgy. Her exposed feet always make me feel cold on her behalf, but mostly it’s that they (sandally stilettos) don’t live up to whatever she’s wearing, in terms of impact.

  6. Dingo says:

Effie aka Elizabeth for the win.

  7. Kali says:

My kingdom for that Elie Saab gown! Holy bejesus, Elizabeth Banks is killing it in that. Could you imagine swishing that cape around?!?

  8. Sabrina says:

Is it just me or does Jennifer look very different than she has in the past? In some of the pictures of the premiere she looks unrecognisable to me from her past self.

However, since I have not been following the Mockingjay press coverage it’s possible that she looks the same as she’s always looked and makeup is the cause for this premiere look.

    • Forthelasttime says:

Either she’s put on weight or she’s had some work. She’s very puffy! Maybe she’s been crying over “the break up”

    • Luciana says:

She looks puffy. It could be bad makeup.

      • Gill says:

She’s probably put on a bit of weight, since she hasn’t been filming for several months. Not that it makes her look any less hot – her body in that Mulger dress is something else.

    • Josephine says:

She’s sick, so that might explain the puffiness. I also think she has the type of face that hairstyle and make-up seem to change a lot.

I’m not getting the intense scrutiny by others in this thread.

  9. AG-UK says:

    Elizabeth Banks…. she looks beautiful.

  10. Holly says:

Those shoes are God awful. They look like Payless knockoffs. She also has reverse raccoon concealer eyes.

Now to say something nice, lol, love the suit and the quilted northern dress is pretty.

Elizabeth Banks wins, though. The cape dress is awesome.

    • RobN says:

I think that, because she’s sick, they used something they thought would brighten her eyes and it went all sorts of wrong.

  11. Milena says:

I really like Natalie Dormer, but that first dress is a hot mess. It looks like she’s wearing two poorly made costume rack castoffs, one on top of another. Her second look is cute though.

  12. Forthelasttime says:

Dress is too bulky on her. It looks like shes wearing a quilt for goodness sake! Not flattering… And her toes! Oh dear…. Get a decent stylist, girl! Love Natalie Dormer. She’s so cool and elegant and not try-hardy.

  13. Isa says:

The last photo reminded me of sex and the city.

  14. Kiddo says:

Natalie Dormer in profile is the best look, but I dislike it from the front. She also looks fetching while smiling, much better than the fish-face expression.

  15. Anne tommy says:

    Julianne looks tres chic..

  16. aligoat says:

I actually get annoyed looking at Jennifer’s shoes. The “these shoes have no support and are really uncomfortable and my feeties want to escape” trend has to end. A simple black or metallic pointed pump would have worked better I think.

    • RobN says:

Really, is it so important not to wear a half size larger that they’d rather have their toes pouring out the front? I realize people’s feet slip forward a bit when they’re standing a long time, but a well fitted, well designed shoe doesn’t look like this.

      • Celia says:

If you look at the photos closely, the shoes are actually too large for her which is why her toes are pouring out. In some photos I saw there was almost two inches of extra space between her feet and back of the shoes.

  17. Josefa says:

Elizabeth’s dress is the only one I like. Natalie’s looks cheap and weird, and the rest are all very forgettable.

Jen’s sporting some weird makeup here. She looks like she either gained weight or had some work done.

  18. amanda says:

that is the CHEAPEST 90′S-LOOKING dress I’ve ever seen in Lawrence.

It’s so tacky. black embroidered flowers on a quilted white dress? No thanks.

She also seems to have a reverse panda look with the light makeup on and around here eyes.

If you see other photos of her standing, you will also notice that she seems to be slipping out of her shoes, theres about 2″ behind her heel in the shoe, which looks terribly uncomfortable helps make this outfit look terribly budget and last-minute thrown together (IMO).

Banks killed it with the caped dress, but Sunday’s photo call she seems to have lost her will to stand up straight…

  19. whatsmyname? says:

Julianne should continue wearing not exciting dresses it’s better then what she usually wears.
Jennifer should have worn the mugler dress to the premiere or atleast worn the silver sandals with the Dior dress the black ones aren’t working.
Natalies dress is terrible at least the bottom part and Jenas is alright in this angle, the slit is too high. And I love Elizabeths dress but I kind of don’t like it on her.

  20. Ninks says:

In the pictures, Jen looks older and I can’t figure out if it’s the makeup she’s wearing or perhaps because she’s sick. I think some of it is attitude too. It’s her first really big public appearance since the theft of her personal photographs and I can’t imagine that it’s easy to stand in front of all those photographers and people imagining what they’ve seen and wondering what they think of you. But in the interviews on the red carpet, I thought she looked her age and appeared to be quite happy and her usual self so what do I know.

    • Veronica says:

She struck me as pretty nervous on the red carpet and only started to ease up once the interviews started and the game face went on. There was one INCREDIBLY AWKWARD interview where the guy hedged around the issue of the nude pic leak, and you can tell from the way her face fell that she wanted to bolt. (Who could blame her?) She seemed a lot more relaxed in the interviews with Hemsworth and Hutcherson today.

  21. Luciana says:

I know it’s an unpopular opinion but I adore Natalie Dormer’s look. It reminds me of Helena Bonhan Carter gowns. The rest look fine. Elizabeth overkilled it IMO.

  22. It is what it is says:

    Natalie Dormerrrrr :D

  23. Lily says:

Jennifer is the star so why isn’t she dressing like it? That would be a boring dress even for an interview. Elizabeth looks gorgeous as always. She takes risks and I feel like she’s been the breakout fashionista of the films.
Seriously what happened to that JLaw in the gold Prabal Gurung for the very first premiere?? I want her back.

  24. Jlee says:

Elizabeth looks fabulous – never seen her looking so good. J-Law was also smoking hot in those dresses, especially the after-party Mugler: difficult to pull off unless you have a body like hers. According to the British media, she was sick as a dog in the run-up to the premiere, which probably explains her pallor under the make-up.

  25. Greek Chic says:

I don’t like the Dior dress at all… It looks cheap and like a duvet cover. Her feet look weird too, like they want to escape! On the other hand the Mugler dress is amazing and her boobs look fantastic!

Elizabeth Bank’s cape dress is gorgeous.

  26. Lexie says:

    Banksy FTW!

  27. Sarah says:

I like that Natalie Dormer wore a poppy at the waist of her dress. Very fitting.

  28. Dany says:

    Love the first dress.
The Mugler dress looks good when she stands…but when she sits it looks horrible cheap. And the slit on her right breast would drive me crazy. At some point the dress will shift and then everyone sees your nipple…

  29. Diana B says:

God, Elizabeth is perfection. Both dresses are a win. I liked Jen’s look. The fabric of the premiere dress sucked but it was a pretty dress. Also, the hair, liked it both on the photocall and the premiere.

  30. bettyrose says:

What’s going on witj Natalie Dormer? She is absolutely stunning on GoT and just sort of hHollywood blah here. Why the fried blonde hair and Barbie makeup on someone so naturally pretty?

    • Someonestolemyname says:

She is blonde, that’s her real color. She died it for the Anne Boleyn role.

Also the shaved cut now was for the film.

    • Etheldreda says:

Yeah, I love Natalie but she looks SO much better as a brunette. The blonde washes her out and detracts from her unique features. And I know she says she’s a natural blonde, but there’s nothing natural about that colour.

  31. lucy2 says:

I like Natalie a lot and think she is really a head turner, but that blue and black dress is awful.
I love the top half of Elizabeth’s dress. She can get away with some more unique fashions, and always looks great.

  32. Ginger says:

Jennifer looks fantastic. She looks so young and fresh on the red carpet then sexy for the after party. Sweet to sexy, very cool! I don’t like either of Elizabeth’s dresses. She’s such a gorgeous woman and it’s hard to detract from that but the first gown when I saw it I thought she was wearing a weird butcher’s apron or surgery gown…the way the red cascades down looks like blood to me. Or maybe I’ve been watching too much of the ID channel? I don’t know. The second gown looks like colored tin foil. Or maybe the survival blanket in my emergency kit. It’s blinding me! Julianne looks heavenly. I love, love, love Natalie’s hairstyle!

  33. Mean Hannah says:

I know everyone loves Elizabeth Banks but here’s an example of why I don’t: her dress at the premier. If you didn’t know anything about the movie, you’d think she was the star, not Jennifer Lawrence, with her giant, statement-making dress. If you do know about the movie, then it looks like she’s trying to upstage the star. I always get that vibe from her. Always wanting more is okay, but I don’t know why I don’t like her for it.

In another series of photos from the photo call and the premier I saw yesterday, Natalie looked much better than here, but more importantly, it looked like she was having a blast. Maybe that’s why she looked so good to me, because she looked like so much fun and the other women seemed to love her company. And I love the blue print dress on Julienne – she looks so great in that color.

  34. sarah says:

Both of the outfits look cheap to me esp. the 2nd one. Reject prom dress from the 90s.

  35. Gill says:

From the photos, everyone looked as if they were having a great time – which doesn’t surprise me, given the combination of women involved. Classy, smart and fun, all of them.

  36. kri says:

Banks wins it all. That Saab dress is glorious and I want it so that on my next red carpet trip to the grocery store, I will be fabulous. I adore that back-it reminds me of the dresses of the mid 18th century. I want to say…Watteau was the court designer in Paris, but I could be wrong. Anyway, it’s awesome, and I love it.

  37. A Fan says:

Elizabeth Banks always wins. She has great style. She wears the clothes, not the other way around.

  38. SillySimone says:

My fave is JM’s black number. I like JLaw’s Dior gown, but the styling is horrible. She looks like she fell into a pot of flour.

  39. Courtney says:

Elizabeth & Julianne both look amazing.

  40. Veronica says:

The makeup was better than it’s been, but you need to look at some of the other shots to see it still needs work. The bronzer was patchy on the one side, and the brightener they used around her eyes was lighter than her foundation. These are amateur mistakes, and it is mind boggling to me that it keeps happening to somebody as big as her. Clothing wise, though, the game has finally stepped up. The Mugler looked great, so I was crushed when I saw that it didn’t survive a car ride unscathed – there was wrinkling all around the pelvic area. (A shot of her in the car with Lorde also made it clear the dress was best viewed from the side and standing – otherwise it was total boob squish.)

Banks was the winner of the night. The after party dress was a little prom-y but still fun enough to work. Perfect for Effie Trinket! The problem for Dior is that when J. Law stands against a look like that, it makes it glaringly obvious how much they’re holding her back even when they do better by her.

  41. Katenotkatie says:

Lorde was there too! And she killed it. Three cheers for everyone’s favorite teen witch:

  42. Lucy says:

They all look great! Elizabeth’s gown is my favourite, and it looks like something Cate Blanchett would wear, right? I just wish you had covered Lorde’s pantsuit!

  43. rudy says:

I liked Jennifer’s gowns. Particularly the white quilted number. Looked very comfortable. But the pant suit was the best.

Did not like E. Banks’ dress. Looked like a Grateful Dead gown with a cape in the back that wouldn’t quit.

Juliette has always been a favorite of mine. The movie Safe was incredible. Her part in The Hours was heart breaking. She is an amazing actress. Her fashion is unique. Maybe because of her fair skin and hair color. Her body rocks. The black spiderly dress was very cool but I really liked the blue shazam skirt and top. Juliette wears clothes that no one ever sees anywhere ever. Kind of like Maggie Gyllenhaal.

  44. LAK says:

I love Elizabeth Banks. And Julianna Moore. Can do no wrong in my eyes.

  45. Bee says:

Why does Jennifer always look so puffy? Her makeup is awful and her shoulders are sooo broad(
Elizabeth Banks can pull anything off

  46. sam says:

No, I’m sorry but that pink crinkly dress on Elizabeth is NOT a win. Agree that Jen’s makeup looks less than stellar (although also agree that it may be that she’s just not feeling well) and the mullet dress with those shoes is wrong. For the premierr Elizabeth wins (I think the cape is a little much but from the front that dress is absolutely stunning). After party, Jen hands down. The fabric on the pink dress is terrible. It basically looks like she is wearing a dress made from dyed aluminum foil. Just bad.
