Rob Lowe, 50, Instagrams a shirtless selfie: would you hit it?

Rob Lowe

I don’t spend much time thinking about Rob Lowe. I’m aware of him as an incredibly pretty person who complains about the injustice of being beautiful. But I saw this photo that Rob posted to Instagram and lost my train of thought for a brief moment in time. This guy recently turned 50, and he could easily pass for 38. The sunburn is a turn-off, but otherwise? The man looks damn good. FYI, the full photo shows blood streaming down Rob’s leg. He put himself into the ER for stitches during a surfing jaunt.

Here’s a new interview that Rob did with HuffPo at the Hilarity for Charity event to benefit Alzheimer’s disease. He’s still gushing about his wife of 23 years, Sheryl Berkoff. Rob recently admitted that meeting Sheryl led him to be monogamous for the first time. I guess monogamy suits him because he’s talking like a teenager:

Rob’s hot for his wife: “I’m going to try to make up for lost time by making out with my wife in the backseat of a car tonight.”

Talking about Alzheimer’s with relatives: “It’s a tacit acknowledgment of aging and mortality. And we don’t want to talk about it. We don’t want to think of our parents in that light and we certainly don’t want to think of ourselves in that light.”

On having two adult sons: Lowe actually shudders at the word “adult” when discussing his children. “It’s such a depressing phrase. I prefer rambunctious. But I can’t really call them kids anymore, can I?”

His early career struggles: “When I was filming The Outsiders, my idea of success was getting the next Martin Scorsese movie. In fact, when Tom Cruise did get the next Martin Scorsese movie [The Color of Money], I was very angry. And then to add insult to injury, it was starring f—ing Paul Newman. So I wanted to kill myself.”

His career outlook now: “Living well is the best revenge. It’s more about how I can live my life with the people I love. And if work doesn’t fit around my lifestyle, I’m not interested.”

He loves surfing & paddleboarding: “Maybe it’s because I’m a Pisces. But whether it’s surfing or just being in the water, I find the ocean unbelievably recharging.”

[From HuffPo]

Do all Pisceans love water? I’m not afraid of it but don’t seek it out. City and mountains are great, but beaches? Nah. I must be on a cusp.

I find it hilarious that Rob was once jealous of Tom Cruise. He’s probably still envious of Tom’s salary, but I think Rob comes out ahead in life. Rob’s been married to the same woman for decades. They’re still madly in love. Tom’s been through 3 wives, just like Ross Gellar. For a throwback, here are some Outsiders stills. (Tom’s teeth are hilarious. Aww, Patrick Swayze….)

    Why yes, yes I would.

    • samtha says:

Yep. The man looks damn good.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Why, yes, I would as well.

    • Ag says:

      who wouldn’t? heretics, that’s who.

despite his “being pretty is HARD” antics, i really like this guy. he seems happy. but do get some sunscreen dude…

    • V4Real says:

I would get low with Rob Lowe anyday. I love men who takes care of themselves at his age. John Stamos is another good looking in shape 50 year old. RDJ is another one; his abs in The Judge was reason enough to see that movie. Oh and let’s not get me started on Pitt and his beauty.

    • Tiffany :) says:

      Absolutely!
I think he is more than a pretty face, he’s pretty talented as well.

      • Sassy says:

He was fabulous as the plastic surgeon in “Behind the Candelabra”, the Liberace bio pix. Also not bad as the cop, Peterson, who had disappearing wives. Oh, yes, in younger days, Hotel New Hampshire. Forgive me if I am off with the titles. It has been a while since I’ve seen them. So – he is a good actor!

    • FLORC says:

It’s an easy YES! And Ugh. Tom’s original teeth.

  2. Jaderu says:

*whimper* Soda Pop! Pony Boy! Johnny! *sob*

  3. Honeybea says:

    “Just like Ross Gellar” LOL

  4. feebee says:

I’d be lying if I said I could easily turn that down.

Being one of his sons must be a blessing and a curse though, no? I mean, genes but then…. dad, put it away.

Patrick Swayze’s on blocks? That must be where Tom got the idea for his shoes.

    • Ag says:

oh, wow, they didn’t even bother to hide the blocks. haha

      • V4Real says:

No photoshop back then, LOL. I remember in HS the boys who were shorter than the girls had to stand on objects in order yo appear taller, plus see over the girls heads.

    • Esmom says:

Omg, I never noticed the bricks before. The official shot must have had them all cropped at the ankle, leaving them all footless looking.

Back before photoshop, my BF’s sister got married to a shorter guy and they had him stand one step above her (they posed in front of a staircase) for their wedding portrait. So silly, as if anyone who knew them was fooled.

  5. InVain says:

I would hit it. He looks amazing for his age. His DirecTV commercials crack me up.

    • Tig says:

I think they’re hysterical as well. However, this selfie, along with comment below- hope someone’s not having an aging crisis and does something stupid!

    • Francesca says:

Omg, me too. He is so so fine as himself and hysterical as his creepy version. Love it!

    • Lee says:

He looks amazing FOR HIS AGE. I don’t know but that FOR HIS AGE thing is somehow reverse compliment in my opinion. After 40 you are done. You will be always look good for your age. Not good because you look good but good FOR YOUR AGE.

      • InVain says:

Geez…I think it’s just a matter of speech sometimes. Yes, he looks great, period. He’s clearly taken care of himself…I have experience with and am related to 50 and 60 somethings who haven’t and don’t. I think his age was purposely pointed out in the title and post for a reason.

  6. Birdix says:

He looks great. But he hit on a family friend in her 20s in Santa Barbara a few years ago (she turned him down) so it’s more complicated than the way he is painting it (isn’t it always?).

    • The other paige says:

Many years ago, (20), I was at a wedding in Santa Barbara with various ‘brat packers’ in attendance…after dancing for a bit, rob Lowe and his wife invited me to join them in a threesome…my fiancé was amused. I said no…so I guess their ‘monogamy’ is more complicated.

      • PennyLane says:

Maybe they have their own personal definition of monogamy?

Some people don’t consider it cheating if their spouse is there to… personally, I would call that sort of thing “being faithful” rather than monogamous but that’s splitting hairs.

      • Isabelle says:

Maybe that’s why they’ve been married for so long? ….if it works for them but its still a little skeevy to be asked ….

  7. tifzlan says:

Chris Traeger is/was my favorite character on Parks and Rec. He’s so good-looking!

    • Courtney says:

      Love Traeger!

    • lucy2 says:

He was LITERALLY your favorite character?

I wasn’t crazy about him at first, but the flu episode totally changed my mind, along with the story of why Chris was so conscious of his health and had so much enthusiasm for life. That show knows how to hit an emotional note now and then quite well.

    • Ange says:

Mine too! To be honest I was bummed he stayed with Ann, she was always the down note.

  8. Nev says:

    SOOOOO YUM.

  9. Ollyholly says:

Do people not know what a selfie is? It’s not referring to any picture of someone, it refers to a picture they take themselves. Not complicated.

  10. Angie says:

Aww, would so totally hit it ! If he were’nt married…is human cloaning coming soon?

  11. imsupposedtobeworking says:

In a mean minute I would!

I do have to say, though, that I had a roommate in college who was incredibly beautiful. More than just good looking. Like, drop-dead gorgeous. It did kind of suck to be her (though I would still trade places). Most people assumed she was stupid (she was an engineering major, and even some of her instructors assumed she was dumb), most women we encountered assumed she was a bitch, and most men were only interested in what was on the outside, and did not care to get to know her heart. She was screwed over by more guys who would say and do anything to be with her, and once they were done showing off their conquest, dropped her like a hot potato.

That said, her looks opened doors for her later in life, but it was really tough for her and she had some major esteem issues. She’s doing well now, and I’m glad. She’s really a nice person.

  12. Esmom says:

Love that Outsiders photo. If anyone’s interested in hearing more about his outlook, I’d recommend his book. I really enjoyed it, despite feeling I needed to hide the cover whenever I read in public! I recently discovered Parks and Rec, he’s just as great as everyone else in it, so funny.

I’m a Pisces and while I was a competitive swimmer I can’t say I love or enjoy the water. I had a real ambivalence about swimming because while I generally hated it, it was the only sport I was good at so I stuck with it so as to not to been completely extracurricular-free. And when it comes to the outdoors, vacations, etc, I am much more drawn to mountains and forests than to water.

Although I am not a fan of cities that aren’t situated on a major body of water, so who knows what that says about my sign.

    • Ag says:

i read his essay a while back about them sending one of their kids off to college. i was BAWLING, imagining that that will be my fate in 16+ years. haha (yes, i am clearly insane, haha.)

      • Esmom says:

I probably shouldn’t read it…I’m the one who bawled in Toy Story 3 when Andy goes off to college, my kids were mortified. And I have been mentally preparing for that day pretty much since they were born, knowing how heart wrenching it will be.

  13. rentho says:

    sure would TWICE!!! :)

  14. Shahrizai says:

He looks great! I’d enjoy watching him on the beach (yeah, I’m a Pisces and I prefer the beach, but will gladly take a mountain lake or stream) but I wouldn’t get down with him. :)

  15. TotallyBiased says:

Like Birdix says, it’s always more complicated. Many residents of Santa Barbara and Montecito have a rather different view of him.

  16. sarah says:

I read his first book ‘Stories I Only Tell My Friends.’ He’s a talented writer. He’s in love with his family & has a successful career, lots of money (he co-owns Miramix) is in great shape. He’s winning. And his quote about having a hard time because he’s beautiful has merit. He discussed in detail how directors would tell him that because he was pretty like a girl they were reluctant to hire him. Sometimes controversial quotes have merit once you get past the shock or eye rolling. I still love the West Wing. He left at the perfect time!

  17. Leftovers says:

I’ve just googled “Tom Cruise teeth” and I do not know what to do with my life going forward. It is unfortunate and not something a young person can necessarily control, but wow.

    • lucy2 says:

Just that photo alone is enough to make me avoid any further googling. Kind of funny how he later became known for his great smile, but I recently saw someone point out that his two front teeth are off center, and I can’t see anything but that now.

All of those guys look hilarious in that photo. It’d be like having your worst high school pictures famous forever.

  18. Ginger says:

He is beautiful. I adore his new commercials for the DirecTV sattelite dish. They crack me up every time. Anyone that can make fun of themselves is OK in my world. As for the Picses/water connection…For some reason my life is full of Pisces and Cancer folks. I’m a full on Earth sign (Taurus on the Cusp of Aries) supposedly we are attracted to water signs. Must be something to it since I married a Cancer (then divorced him) and then married a Pisces. My best friend in the world is a Pisces and she adores water. My husband is really into all things fish, fish tanks, diving, etc. and refuses to eat fish.

  19. silken_floss says:

Mmmmm yes please! He and Keanu are on my Older Men to F*ck Bucket List :)

  20. Dragonlady sakura says:

    Short answer…Hell yeah!

  21. kri says:

He must have cold bottles of angel plasma delivered daily to his door. Between him and Keanu, I swear they have some wizardry going on. He seems genuinely content…maybe that’s a big part of looking good.

  22. Adrien says:

He could pass for Ian Somerhalder’s brother. He’s hot but I cannot get that Lucille Bluth in Liberace look out of my brain every time I see him.

  23. Quinn says:

I’d hit it twice, HARD!!! My lust for Rob began in Oxford Blues and Hotel New Hampshire…I’d have to, just for nostalgia sake.

He still looks amazing- in real life, I could never marry a guy prettier than me.

  24. Etheldreda says:

His body is amazing and he does look good, but I’m surprised nobody has commented on the amount of work he’s had done to his face. If this was a 50 year old woman, nobody would be talking about anything else.

    • Buddha bear says:

Totally agree. It is precisely because of this that I don’t find him hot anymore . Too Raquel Welch.
I like men who age a bit more ruggedly. Some work is fine, but he is looking waxy.

  25. Deb says:

I absolutely would. Beautiful, yes, but he can be very funny and self-deprecating in interviews and on Twitter too. I’ve always had a soft spot for him.

  26. Vampi says:

Gimmie! Yesssss! And… I SOOO WOULD! Over, and over and OVER!

  27. Rhiley says:

I’m a Pisces and love the water. I compete in open water swims. own 2 kayaks, and paddle board whenever I can. As for Rob, he literally has some of the dreamiest eyes ever.

  28. Christin says:

Rob looks great. And I usually like what he has to say. He is an example of rolling with the flow of life. Twenty-plus years ago, Rob’s career and image seemed to be derailed, but he stayed in the game. Maybe Tom commands more money, but I think Rob has fared better in what matters (work/family priorities).

Patrick is my bigger crush, though. Within the last week, I watched one of his movies and enjoyed a hilarious skit he did with Jan Hooks on SNL. He seemed like such a genuinely nice person.

  29. alexandra says:

I would hit that 6 ways ’till sunday

  30. Elle says:

I have to say, after seeing him on Parks & Rec, I do think his looks hurt him. Because he does comedy really well, and it seems like Hollywood operates on this (incorrect) mindset that beautiful people can’t be truly funny. I’d seen him in a lot of other roles before, but even the “funny” ones seemed based off his looks.

He has great timing and he doesn’t seem afraid to do what it takes in the service of a joke. I never thought I’d say this about Rob Lowe of all people, but I’d love to see him in another sitcom.

  31. KC says:

Tom Cruise’s teeth…..WOW! They’re the reason I’m posting. I just don’t understand and want to know if anyone else knows how in superficial Hollyweird he was even able to get his TOENAIL in the door to become a reigning heartthrob???!!!! I mean did he start off playing the token unattractive/goofy guy and make enough money to get them fixed and all of a sudden casting directors saw him differently? SERIOUSLY questions y’all.

  32. shay says:

not to nit-pick, but that isn’t a selfie

  33. Stephanie says:

I would hit it like a house on fire!

  34. Happy21 says:

    You know it!

    Sodapop Curtis 4EVA!!!!! xoxo

    ;) :p

  35. may23 says:

What is happening in Tom Cruise’s mouth?

    • Etheldreda says:

I’ve just googled pics of ‘Tom Cruise teeth young’ – yes really – and the only pic of him with bad teeth is the same as the one above. In other pics his teeth seem OK. I wonder if he was ‘in character’ and the snaggle tooth is prosthetic?

      • Ange says:

Nah, he had pretty ornery teeth in Legend too, though even then they’d been fixed a bit.

      • Petrichor says:

I was just reading about The Outsiders on IMDB, and according to the trivia section there, he removed a cap for the movie. So I guess the tooth had been fixed, and he “unfixed” it for the role.

  36. Vita says:

Rob Lowe is Not Monogamous. At all.

A friend of mine hooked up with him in Miami a few years ago, when she met him at her hotel. She was drunk – I don’t know about him – but the story was pretty wild, especially since he showed no concern about stepping out on his wife and/or messing around with a random person.

I don’t know whether these gushing interviews are overcompensation to sell the “perfect family” story or whether he is trying to get his wife’s forgiveness for cheating on her, but I’m not buying what he’s selling.

  37. vv007 says:

He needs to chill on that statement about Pisces and water. I am technically a Pisces but born on the cusp with Aries, and I hate, hate, hate the water. In fact I am pretty sure my hate is a mask for my fear of water lol

But other than that, he looks great for his age!

    • Boxy Lady says:

@vv007 Pisces is one of the water signs in astrology (Cancer and Scorpio are the others). Maybe you have more of an Aries birth chart (since you’re on the cusp). Aries is a fire sign.

  38. zannadoo says:

He slept with my sister’s friend in London in the 90s when his relationship with his wife was relatively new. He wasn’t monogamous when he was in fresh new love …I think it was ’93. Not sure of the exact year, brain gets cobwebs…but he was in town for a play.
