Angelina Jolie gave Brad Pitt a $3 million vintage watch as a wedding gift

wenn21330030

Yay, Brangelina news. As far as I know, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still in Malta, filming By the Sea. Angelina wrote the screenplay and she’s directing it. It’s set in the 1970s. She plays a dancer named Nessa, apparently. Which already has me giggling. Nessa the 1970s dancer = Angelina Jolie. And Brad plays a journalist or writer or something. His character is named “Roly” which I sincerely hope is pronounced “Raleigh” and not “roll-E.” These character names are important, because they were allegedly inscribed onto a $3 million watch.

He has wealth and possessions beyond his wildest dreams. But that did not stop Angelina Jolie giving Brad Pitt a rare watch said to be worth more than $3 million as a wedding gift. The saucy Maleficent actress bought her man a much coveted 1952 Patek Philippe platinum chronometer, a legendary design by one of the most respected of all Swiss watchmakers.

Angelina’s romantic gesture became known after she had a friend take it to shop to have it inscribed – ‘To Roly from Nessa.’ The couple play these characters in drama By The Sea, a movie they are currently filming in Malta, and which the actress is also directing.

George Farrugia who runs a jewellery shop on the neighbouring island of Gozo, told The Mirror: ‘I did inscribe the watch, it was for Brad and it was a rare one. Oh yes, it was very valuable.’

However the huge value of the watch did not faze the experienced 57-year-old.

He said: ‘I wasn’t nervous about the inscription because I knew I could do the work perfectly.’

[From The Daily Mail]

I think I remember something about Brad liking expensive watches, so this makes sense, I guess. Angelina would give Brad a wedding gift like this. Maybe. I wonder what he gave her? Hopefully some fabulous jewelry. I’ve always wanted them to do jewelry in a big way, like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

Meanwhile, People Magazine had an exhaustive write-up about Brad and Angie’s first month of marriage and what it’s been like for them. Let’s see… they were recently on the island of Gozo, where they stopped by Jack’s Bar and Grill and Bowling with the kids. Everybody was happy and relaxed. They also had a day off on a yacht, and all the kids got to swim and play games. This is my favorite detail:

Jolie likes to lie low on their trip. While on a solo outing, she was recognized by fans but “she just smiled and waved,” another island observer says. Another source adds that she’s even trying to learn the native dialect to fit in: “She has asked for a Maltese translator because she wants to speak with the locals in their own language. How nice she is!”

[From People]

That is nice. I think Angelina probably likes to know some conversational words in many different languages so she can communicate throughout her travels. Anyway, the message that comes across is that Angelina and Brad are doing just fine, they’re relaxed and enjoying this shoot in Malta. Good for them.

How many starving children in Africa would that feed? I dislike both of them.

    • Soulsister says:

She already gives a third of her money to charity and supports a whole load of other humanitarian causes so why shouldn’t she be able to spend the rest of the money that she earns on whatever she wants.

    • doofus says:

just curious, do you complain about all extravagant celeb purchases?

from all reported accounts, Jolie gives a huge amount of her income to charity, probably more than a lot of celebs who also make very extravagant purchases. I hope you’ll complain about the other celebs financial choices as well.

    • starrywonder says:

Is that the rule now? I have money and it must go to kids in Africa? Cause if that’s the case I am doing this wrong as well.

    • Kit says:

They donate TONS of money to charity. They can do whatever they want with what they earn.

      • Someonestolemyname says:

        +1
Angelina doesn’t need to defend buying her husband a costly watch, it’s HER hard earned money.
They can enjoy the money they earn if they choose to, they BOTH give Millions to charities.

      • Dany says:

and DiCaprio gives tons of his own money to charity too but he is not “allowed” to fly in his private jet or party on his yacht

      • Bridget says:

When DiCaprio takes on his environmental causes, he’s asking people to make changes within their daily lives that he himself isn’t even willing to make. It would be like Charlie Sheen doing an anti-domestic violence fundraiser – while it’s great to raise money for a worthy cause, wouldn’t it be appropriate for the person throwing it to at least espouse the beliefs themself?

    • Nikki L. says:

How much does the couple already do for charity? She’s was (is) the Goodwill Ambassdor to the UN, for goodness sake!

If I had millions upon millions and could do something nice like that for my husband as a wedding gift, I absolutely would have.

    • Sal says:

This post is sarcastic right? Just how many starving Africans could you have fed if you didn’t spend money on the internet? This couple does ABOVE AND BEYOND their share. How about you match them?

      • JLo says:

I hope that comment was a sarcastic joke! I usually roll my eyes at the ridiculous amount of money celebrities spend on themselves, but not Brad & Angie. They lend more than their face or name to charitable causes, they contribute millions of dollars of their own money all the time! No snark here.

    • Janet says:

How many starving children would the Amalooney wedding feed? Why didn’t they give all that money to charity and just buy a ladder and elope?

    • Mermaid says:

funny, how comes it that nobody complained about lets say, liz taylor before she died? with all her diamonds, she could have helped so much but instead she just watched at them for decades. nice. She did charity too you know. or clooney, he had a very expensive wedding and i dont believe that her parents paid that. but he does charity too. he paid 13 million for a wedding? how comes single woman like aniston buys mansions for 40 million dollars. why does a single woman need a mansion of 40 Million? Nobody blamed her.
So all the rich people like Bill Gates too, should stop giving money to charity now because its shallow minded of them that they dont give EVERYTHING they have to charity, right?
Whatever they do with their money, if they give money to charity, thats ok to me. every dollar helps. so start by yourself honey

    • Steph says:

      Boo! I think she rocks

  2. Someonestolemyname says:

Awwww, so sweet. I just adore them together.

  3. Abbott says:

But whyyyyyy weren’t they at any of the 587 Clooney wedding events? Did they buy him a gift? There’s still Tupperware on the registry!

  4. aims says:

That seems like an ungodly amount of money for a watch. But I don’t have their money and I can’t yell out give it to charity, because they’re one of the most charitable people on the planet. I feel like the jester is similar to Taylor-Burton relationship.

  5. Jill says:

She should give him some Timex and these 3 millions donate to charity.

    • Sal says:

She already donates more than her fair share as it is.

    • Someonestolemyname says:

She doesn’t need to defend buying her husband a costly watch, with HER money.
      She donates Millions, to charities.

    • Santolina says:

If this is a true story (DM?), I agree that it’s an obscene amount of money to spend on a piece of jewelry. She can do whatever she wants with her money, AND I reserve the right to have an opinion about it.

  6. blue marie says:

Guess I’ll be returning the matching Swatches I got them.

  7. BengalCat2000 says:

That engraver is my new hero. I could never be that cool and calm. *reaching for xanax bottle*

  8. The Original G says:

These are investment pieces. This watch will only get more valuable. Sourcing it would be a trick and a half.

Why do people feel they have to justify their personal gift to each other? Seems that they saved 10 million compared to Clooney.

    • Alice says:

I think the Daily Mail made this up completely. The watch (at least the one they showed in their pictures) is a one of a kind piece that was custom made for an American client in the ’50 and was sold to an investment fund in 2012 for $4 million at a Christies auction. The photo the DM used was pulled directly from the Christies catalogue. As you noted, these are investment pieces and it seems very unlikely that they would have sold it for 25% less than they bought it for, they note on their website that they expect a 15% increase per year. They have an obligation to their shareholders which probably doesn’t include selling a (by their own estimates) $5.3 million dollar watch for $3 million to anybody.

The language thing seems a bit exaggerated as well. Almost 90% of the population speaks English as it’s one of their official languages. One of the reasons that it was (maybe still is, I’m not up on their current laws) a popular destination for tax haven seeking Brits.

      • Alice says:

Also, could be that the jeweller guy is just trying for free publicity. I would think that if Angelina had paid that sort of money for a watch, she’d have Robert Procop or an official Phillipe Patek representative oversee any engraving she wanted and not some stranger she’s never dealt with before. The woman is no idiot.

  9. Christine says:

I think she does quite enough charity work to allow her to splurge on her husband and family without being shamed for it, Jill. Can you say you do what you can?

    • Jen2 says:

Yeah, they give more to charity than most, and they had a relatively inexpensive wedding, so they can spend the rest of their money how they want. Funny that this couple is not allowed to spend money on themselves without the “give it to charity” mantra but others are. He likes vintage watches and cameras, so this seems like what he would like.

    • FingerBinger says:

You have to admit that 3 million is a lot to spend on a watch. Just the other day people were talking about what a waste it was for Katy Perry to spend 4 million on a birthday party.

      • Jsilly4 says:

This! I agree Fingerbinger. Everyone is always going off on celebs (who also give to charities) for spending obscene amounts of money. I was curious if anyone would notice the double standard when it comes to Pitt-Jolie.

I personally feel if any person, celeb or not, has the money and is not hurting anyone, they can do whatever they want with it. I also feel that people should stop with the “they should give it to charity”. You don’t know how these people donate or how much. While I may never spend such money on a party, wedding, watch, etc. many people do.

      • The Original G says:

A watch and a birthday party are two entirely different things. This watch becomes an actual asset and will accrue value over time.

A party is just blowing money, though I suspect their might be some PR write-off there.

      • Sal says:

The thing is Jsilly4, no other celebs are ever called out. Only Angelina and Brad are. You are right there is a double standard; one that sees no other celebs criticised for what these 2 are criticised for. The Original G, exactly. It will be an investment and passed down to one of the children. A lot different from some little birthday party.

      • FingerBinger says:

What looks like an “investment” to some can look like a vulgar display of wealth to others. I guess it depends on your perspective.

      • The Original G says:

Real estates, art watches, really rare fine jewelry are ACTUAL financial investments. The hold and increase in value. Parties are not.

Is this watch a vulgar display of wealth or is it a museum quality milestone in technical achievement? And it apparently is a highly personal acknowledgement of Brad interest in design. Is real innovation and quality is worth pursuing or valuing or just the cheapest goods?

      • tc says:

Eh, I actually think spending money on parties, vacations, and meals with family members and friends is a better use of money. At least with those you’re making memories. A watch is just a thing.

Though maybe the watch will become a family heirloom? If so, then I get it. But there are better ways to invest money than buying a flashy piece of jewelry.

  10. Jaderu says:

OH man the Taylor Burton jewelry! It was all so expensive and superficial, but I would like to roll around naked wearing all of Liz’s jewelry. Just once.

    • Jsilly4 says:

JADERU, LOL thanks for the laugh. All I was thinking was “ouch” hahaha

    • Eleonor says:

AHAHAH ! It was soo crazy and over the top!
La Liz jewelery is really serious stuff! Pr0n . And it makes today’s stars jewls look small. And cheap.

  11. AlmondJoy says:

🙋 May I please ask a serious question?? Is this ok because of who they are?? Or is it a “disgusting display of wealth” and a sickening use of money as is usually said about other couples that spend ridiculous amounts on each other as gifts? I don’t get offended by how rich people choose to spend their money, but many do, and I’m just wondering if people will approve of this because they use so much of their money to help others.

  12. lisa2 says:

There are reports all the time about her buying some over expensive gift. She may have bought him a watch and but I don’t believe it was that much.

    • lower-case deb says:

i’m waiting for the next fallout where Brad punts his expensive watch from his expensive helicopter into their expensive waterfall in the middle of their expensive but leaky heartshaped FLW island while binge eating a complex flatbread cooked by Pax.

      • Jen2 says:

Let’s not forget the multiple houses he owns in Germany, Italy, England and every place he has ever set foot and the 20 children they have birthed or adopted and of course there is the $100 mil yacht. This could go on and on!!

      • Mermaid says:

Some people create these storys for PR for themself. like this heartshaped island. That island became very popular and the chances are bigger that it will sell now.
i remember a story, where an italian real estate company spread the rumour that they were buying a 20 million mansion in italy. it was a lie, that manison did not sell so he used their visit to italy as his marketing wheel. Brad and Angelina never met this guy or ever visited that mansion, or even were near that city, italy is not big but its also not a tiny country. it was just a cheap PR-lie.

      • doofus says:

you forgot that he’ll yell “Suck it, Haters!” while punting the watch out of the heli.

      • lucy2 says:

He has to run out crying. You can’t forget that detail.

  13. Cali says:

You can’t take it with you. That’s all I’ve got to say about that.

On the couple front, I truly love them together.

  14. Candy Love says:

I’m calling BS on this story first off this story originally came from the “Mirror” which is unreliable and they said it MIGHT coast $2 Million now the DailyFail post the story and they’re saying the watch coast $3 Million what’s next US mag say it worth $6 million.

  15. db says:

    Money, y’all.

  16. Nedsdag says:

If Clooney gave Amal a $3 million vintage watch, everyone would be saying he bought her off. Whatever!

    • Sal says:

What have they got to do with anything? Angelina and Brad were already as rich as each other, so there is no financial/power imbalance. Amal isn’t as rich as Clooney. Apples vs oranges.

      • Nedsdag says:

        Typical Brangelina fan.

      • Sal says:

If pointing out how absurd a comment is means I am a typical Brangelina fan, I’m all for it and am damn proud. Better being rational and using logic and reason than make a fool of myself by posting absurd infantile crazy bs. Typical hater, not being able to take being put in your place.

      • Nedsdag says:

Brangelina fans such as yourself stopped using logic and reason ever since they got together.

      • maddelina says:

I’d be embarrassed to claim I was a proud fan of any celebrity. We don’t even know these people other than what they put forward to the public. It’s an image, a character, not reality. Sal how have you benefited by being a proud fan of these two? I’m not trying to belittle you, I’m just curious as to why people get so defensive when it comes to Brad and Angie.

      • Sal says:

I said if pointing out lack of logic makes me a ‘typical Brangelina fan’ then I am proud of that. Quite easy to understand. maggie its no different from you being proud of being an Aniston fan and getting so defensive over her. Considering all the work that Angelina does as a humanitarian (I don’t care too much for her movies), yes, I AM very proud to be a supporter of hers. I think most people are happy to support goodness. Wouldn’t you be proud to support good people who do good things? Its human nature.

Nedsdag (maggie?) Haters like you never had any logic and reason in the first place, and you still don’t. That’s why you’re a hater.

      • maddelina says:

Not Nedsdag or maddie or a hater or an Aniston fan. I simply asked a question Sal.

      • Nedsdag says:

Let me put it this way, Sal: there are things I “hate,” but a celebrity famewhoring couple is not worth hating. Criticizing maybe, but not hating. Have a nice day and read a dictionary!

  17. Diana B says:

Hahahaha, I knew this would happen! People bickering about whether it is wrong or wright that she gave him something that expensive. I wonder if all the defenders were this vocal when it was reported Katy Parry was spending a lot of money on her birthday. I truly don’t care, they earn it the can spend it which ever way they want, but the double standar does bother me.

    • Jen2 says:

I would say the same thing. Her money to spend as she wishes. Just as it is Clooney’s or Kanye’s money to spend on his wedding as he wishes. But the double standard is when this couple does it, the scream of “give it to charity” is so strong. It should be the same for everyone then.

    • Sal says:

As addressed above, there is a BIG difference between an investment such as a watch like that, and some little birthday party. A big BIG difference. Its ludicrous to even attempt to compare the 2.

      • Diana B says:

Right, because it is so your place to determine if the finances of people you don’t even know are good or bad…

      • Sal says:

Huh? That doesn’t even make sense. I said nothing at all about the finances of Katy Perry. I just said that it is ridiculous to compare an piece of investment to some party. Which it is. Would you compare spending 20 thousand dollars on a car to spending 20 thousand on a party?

      • Diana B says:

But my point is, who are you to say that? it is their money. They should be able to spend it the way they want to. Perhaps money to Katy means more if she can spend it with her loved ones instead of piling on it and that’s totally valid. The fact is that you know nothing about these people in reality so why are you dictating the way they should or should not spend their money?

      • Sal says:

I never said how anyone should spend their money. Go look in this thread. I didn’t dictate anything. You were the one who dragged Katy Perry into it. I simply said there is a difference between a party and an expensive watch, which to anyone’s rational mind, there is. At no stage did I ever make value judgments or dictate anyone. You did that. Not me.

      • Diana B says:

Actually Sal, I wasn’t talking about you specifically, I was talking about all the people that feel the need to critizice how celebrities spend their money. I don’t even know what you said upthread, it just bothers me how intrusive people can be how much of a double standar there is for celebrities that are liked vs celebrities that are hated. That is all.

  18. Gina says:

Kind of a cruel irony that the rich give to the rich. But the highfalutin celebs don’t think like us commoners as they all claim they were once poor folk. They have the world at their fingertips. I would imagine after awhile you lose some of yourself in the fray….but as I am struggling here with my grocery list, I’d trade lifestyles for a month!

  19. Paige says:

This story is from Mirror a tabloid and is being reported on Dailymail so I doubt this story is even true. It’s just like that waterfall story that was fake.

  20. Altariel says:

The Jolie-Pitt fortune is nothing compared to many other wealthy business people, families around the world. Just imagine what a multi-billionaire can buy for his wife and kids (well, I can’t actually). They can do whatever they want and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Having said that, I wouldn’t mind a little shade if I could trade places with a Brangie.

  21. Kim1 says:

    The Mirror tabloid ? GMAB
They claimed Brad was George’s best man.
They claimed Brad was on a 12pm flight to George’s wedding.
I believe they lied and said Angie was sueing DM about the drug dealer video.
    More BS
Same Shi#,Different Day it never ends
I dont care how much the watch cost just like I dont care if a wealthy person spends alot on art, jewelry, vintage cars etc.As for Katy Perry she can spend $10M either way its not going to end global poverty or hunger.

  22. frivolity says:

I find this (whether true or not) and ALL displays of wealth sickening. And we wonder why the world is the way it is. Charity is just an excuse for maintaining systemic exploitation.

  23. maddelina says:

Their money is theirs to spend however they want. But to say they give more to charity than anyone else is wrong, they just may be featured for their charity more on celebitchy than anyone else.

  24. poppy says:

engraving a rare piece linking it to a movie would be too risky for me.

  25. anne_000 says:

Letting it get to the press that she put their movie characters’ names on the watch makes me think it became partly a business deal as a movie promo.

  26. kendra says:

Mrs. Brad Pitt can buy Mr. Brad Pitt any thing, Mrs. Brad Pitt wants to.

  27. Dany says:

I´m not sure if it was a smart investment as some here seem to think. It´s a rare $3 million watch Brad likely never will wear and they inscribed the names of two characters from some movie no one knows will be good or have success… I really hope this story is made up

    • doofus says:

I’m torn on the value…I think it’s the kind of thing that would normally go up and down in value, depending on what people are willing to pay but, overall, a good investment. and in all likelihood, Pitt wouldn’t ever sell it but would probably pass it down or gift it to one of his children.

but I had the same thought that you did…when you engrave something in a personal way, it can actually LOSE value as the next person who would want to buy a gorgeous vintage watch wouldn’t want it engraved for someone else. sort of like refinishing/restoring things can take away from their value.

but THEN, I thought…”how much would a brangelina superfan pay for something like that?! Not only a gift from Jolie to Pitt, but ENGRAVED with their MOVIE NAMES?!” I’d think that might be quite the collectable, as far as hollywood memorabilia goes…

    • lucy2 says:

I wondered that myself, if a personal engraving would devalue the piece in terms of resale. I tend to think it would, like doofus said there are some items that are more valuable untouched than repaired or refinished, or changed in any way.

In case anyone is wondering about the actual value vs. tabloid reporting, they might be right on with this one. I looked it up and Christie’s sold a similar one for just under $4 million and another from the same maker for $3.6 million, both at an auction in 2012.

Personally, even if I had millions just sitting around, I don’t think I could spend that on a watch.

  28. Santolina says:

This grotesque display of wealth effectively wipes out any relatability Brangelina may have built with the common folk (splashing their adorably kid-centered wedding all over the pages of People, etc.).

    • Rena says:

Thanks for the truth Candy Love. Angelina did not buy this watch for Brad.

No truth to this watch purchase at all. No surprise as this lie began in the Mirror and the was picked up by the DM and run with. No truth to this watch purchase at all. No surprise as this lie began in the Mirror and the was picked up by the DM and run with.

    • Ennie says:

      tnx for the truth

    • Jen2 says:

Thanks. We can add this to the extremely long list of un-true rumors about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, (though I kind of liked It), but glad it was not true. Right up there with islands and waterfalls. Now will all those above who trashed her for being so extravagant now go OOPSy and Never mind?

      • Kim1 says:

People who despise Brad and Angie don’t care about the truth. They will simply wait for the next tabloid BS story to go on and on about how “disgusting” they are.

      • Santolina says:

How about little less snarking at other posters who had a different opinion than yours? Not everybody who reacted negatively is a “hater.”

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Yeah–I was confused about why she would have the character names etched into the watch…if it was a wedding present, why wouldn’t she put THEIR names on the watch, instead of movie character names?

  29. Ann says:

I think the amount is exaggerated. Probably a conversion error.

  30. Neil says:

Angie and Brad very rarely respond to reports about them both negative and positive and thus you always get stories about them that ALWAYS end up being wrong. Consider the sources and consider the motivations of the sources. I am always so surprised that in this cynical culture of ours people are ready to swallow such nonsense without any thoughts to whether they are being manipulated.
This would be so out of character for Brad and Angie that I promise if this is real I will come back here and apologize profusely.

  31. tc says:

I actually don’t think Angelina can speak conversationally in any language other than English. If so, we would have heard about it by now. Sure, she might know Hello, Nice to Meet You, and Thank You, but so do most people.

Not that that’s a bad thing – some people aren’t good at languages. It’s just that Jolie has done so much deserving of legitimate praise that it’s unnecessary and a little insulting for us to congratulate her on things she has not yet accomplished.

  32. LAK says:

After the Amalooney weekend extravaganza, the brange need to up game. I refuse to settle for anything less.

    • lisa2 says:

I think the only reason to Up your game is if you feel you are in competition with someone. I don’t think Brad and Angie are in competition with George and Amal. I think the public and gossip world would love it but the game can’t be played unless both parties are on the field.

How many times have we heard that Brad and Angie are jealous of this one or that one.. this couple or that one. Every new couple in the world of Entertainment is the one that is going to make Brad and Angie an after thought. I have seen this so many times; and yet nothing has changed. They are still doing very well.

I figure Brad and Angie are doing their thing and not actually fretting over what George and Amal are doing. Again the game is a wash unless two are playing. I don’t see the JPs playing.

    • Chris2 says:

      LAK
      Quite right…..this won’t do.
They must have something up their sleeves to redress the balance.
I thought rare gemstones could play a part. How about having each other’s name in tiny emeralds embedded in their front teeth? This way it would be both very luxe and exclusive, yet playable to critics as ‘organic kale’.
      ;)

  33. Louise177 says:

I have to laugh at all of the haters who believe this story and screaming money should have been given to charity. Where were these comments when George Clooney got married? I would have some respect for the haters if they they were honest and said they hate everything Brad and Angelina do. I don’t know why tabloids keep saying Brad and Angelina spend millions on each when none of the houses, boats, etc never happened. Brad isn’t know for buying expensive watches. If Angelina was going to spend millions on a gift it would on art or motorcycles. Those are his passions. Also the details don’t make sense. A “friend” got the engraving? Wouldn’t you bring such an expensive, personal present yourself? How would the jeweler know who’s it for? Why use names from a movie that doesn’t have much meaning? I would think Mr. and Mrs. Smith. If you had celebrity clients would you run to the tabloids? That’s the quickest to make sure you never see their business again.
