Lupita Nyong’o in vintage Valentina at the EW pre-SAG party: adorable & chic?

Here are some photos from the Entertainment Weekly event/party held Friday night, the night before the SAG Awards. I didn’t want these photos to get lost in all of the SAG coverage (go here to see), because there’s some cuteness happening with some of these ladies, and it’s especially nice to see a few of them looking cute after they bungled it at the SAGs.

Lupita Nyong’o did not bungle it at the SAGs, but her Gucci look wasn’t my favorite that I’ve seen from her so far. But I have to give her credit for this: she knows HOW to dress for each occasion. An Entertainment Weekly party is the perfect opportunity to show off a cute little dress, and Lupita got a vintage Valentina dress for the event. This is so mod and 1960s. Like, Michelle Williams would have tried to wear this to the Golden Globes, but Lupita knew it should be used for a party. Plus, she paired it with a cute headband!

Kerry Washington looked kind of awful at the SAGs, but at this event, she looked adorable and maternity-appropriate in Tory Burch. Totally cute dress.

And the Downton girls were there too – Michelle Dockery wore Prada and Laura Carmichael wore… well, I don’t have the ID, but it’s okay. Those shoes need to be put out of their misery though. Just take the shoes out into the street and shoot them. I like that Michelle is experimenting with some edgier looks, some bolder prints and such, but I feel like she’s at her best when she realizes that her beauty works well with very traditional, classic styles.

I DON’T CARE WHAT LUPITA WEARS, SHE ALWAYS LOOKS AMAZING!!!

The face dress is cute, but I hate that rainbow thingy..

    • don't kill me i'm french says:

With her face ,her body and her amazing skin,it’s dificult to do wrong

    • Liv says:

Her makeup is great, much better than at the SAGs.

      • Anna says:

I do love that she/style team are playing around with makeup quite a bit. So many dark-skinned actresses stick to just one look (nude-ish lips, really dark smokey eye), she’s a great example of ‘fun with makeup with any complection.’ She needs to get a beauty contract, stat – her face is to die for.

    • Decloo says:

Lupita! The best dress on anyone all awards season. I love vintage mod and this is an exquisite example. The fit is killer too. Go Girl!!!

  2. Anna says:

I know LN is supposed to be the new fashion IT girl, but I am just not feeling it. She almost always looks good, but I just dont see her own aesthetic in anything. Her stylist does a great job of giving us a good range of appropriate, perfectly fitted outfits but no so much personality. Yes, on the one hand we can attribute this to LN being totally new on the scene, even compared to younger starlets with their own aesthetic (Emma Watson, Emma Stone, Mia Wasikowska), not to mention vets like Blanchette and Saldana, but on the other…I dunno, I am still waiting for that shining moment, or even a not so shining one, that feels very HER.

    • lisa2 says:

I see what you are saying.. I’m actually not a fan of this particular dress. I don’t know why. Maybe if it was a bit longer.. ???

anyway we have really only seen her on the RC. I think you will get a better since of who she is outside of that when you see pics of her in her “own clothes”.. She is being styled like all the others we see, but I want to see what she wears just walking around. I don’t think I have seen any pictures of her outside of promotion.

anyway hope it is up soon.. She won a PGA last night and so did TYAS.. so I was very very happy for that win.

      • Anna says:

A person can win a PGA? I thought they just awarded the producer teams (and actual projects in movies and TV), no?

I do wonder where her career will go from this point. I would be very curious to see her street style.

      • JessicaC says:

Correction: SHE didn’t win anything last night at the PGAs. TYAS tied with Gravity for best picture. The Producer’s Guild Awards (PGAs) are only for producers, and Lupita is not one. She didn’t win anything, the producers of her film did.

      • Kim1 says:

I think she should have sat out the PGAs.Most of the actors who attend are also Producers like Leo,Afleck,Forest, etc.
Lupita is starting to become overexposed. She was not a nominee or presenter at PGAs

      • Anna says:

        I respectfully disagree, Kim1.
PGAs, DGAs etc receive a lot less publicity (despite being important in the industry) bc there’s a lot less visible celeb showing, particularly women in pretty dresses. That’s the reality of things. So someone like Lupita or Blanchette showing up to a guild event like this makes a lot more ppl aware of the event themselves, and suddenly people are paying more attention to what those guilds decide – and that draws industry and public attention to the movies themselves, which is the whole point.

      • Kim1 says:

@Anna Im starting to read the backlash, people are getting tired of her being treated like “the second coming” I say less is more in terms of appearances. We can agree to disagree.

      • Elodie says:

@ Kim1 eh even though granted that no one can be universally liked, those people tired of her are still very much a minority so they can have a seat. She is supporting her film, it’s what an actor/actress is expected to do during an Oscar campaign. She isn’t even on many other actors/actresses exposure level.
Amazing how a woman always get the “tired of her” treatment quickly just as fast… I mean since less is more in terms of appearance, Chiwetel has been to all the events as equally as her but he doesn’t get the same treatment i.e. people are tired…. Right…. Baffling.

      • Anna says:

Elodie, dudes all blend together…unless it’s Chris Hemsworth ;)

      • Jessica says:

@Elodie: “a minority so they can have a seat” – Yeah, because if you’re opinion differs from the masses then you don’t count. And it’s not like the “you’re a minority therefore you don’t count” think hasn’t been used for centuries to oppress people or anything.

And by the way, men get the “tired of” treatment, too. A lot of people tired of Hiddleston and Cumberbatch when they were getting like 1-2 posts a day for a few weeks a while back.

    • LadySlippers says:

Interesting. I’ll need to ponder that.

      • Anna says:

On the flip side there’s JLawr who you KNOW would rather be in sweats, so she just goes along with every Dior ridiculousness and doesnt take herself seriously as a fashion person. I find that refreshing and thus dont even try evaluate her as a Fashion Girl. Not everyone has to be one! I feel like Lupita is the 2014 version of Chastain 2 years ago. Everyone tried so hard to make Chastain the Fashion It Girl after Cannes, and then she started wearing one ill-fitting and questionably styled look after the next.

    • SonjaMarmeladova says:

I agree. She is beautiful and always looks great, but I still haven’t seen her in anything spectacular that would scream fashion moment.

      • Audrey says:

Nothing ground breaking. Just nice, perfectly tailored dresses.

I’m just annoyed that most comments hate on Jennifer lawrence now even when she’s not mentioned. They’re not in a battle, stop. Jennifer hasn’t even really campaigned.

  3. Dani2 says:

This isn’t my favourite look on her but she really seems to have this inner beauty. It’s just something that’s beautiful and captivating.

  4. AG-UK says:

LN looks great but I am not liking the bow thing, I dont’ like it when parents do it with girls who have short hair to make sure you KNOW they are a girl and not really on an adult. Otherwise the dress is cute she always seems to look put together. The face dress ummm don’t know it fits her nicely but not feeling it.

  5. SonjaMarmeladova says:

Laura Charmichael looks the best. And she is so pretty, they style her very dowdy in DA.

  6. Kali says:

After her SAG speech, I’m in full girl-crush mode on Lupita. It’s very distracting.

I think Kerry Washington looks amazing no matter what she wears (I really liked her crop top and skirt) but stop! With! The! Belly! Cupping! Yes. Your womb fruit is about to drop. We KNOW it’s not just a big meal up in there.

I really like Michelle Dockery’s dress! The print is awesome but I think the fit with the sticky-uppy bits on the neckline is just ever so slightly off.

Sweet Jesus, Lady Edith has some fantastic gams *adds pic to gym motivation*

    • Dreamyk says:

The belly cupping is out of control. Seriously irritating. WHY? Why won’t she stop. She is noticeably heavy with child and there is no way she could ever be mistaken for being merely overweight. It’s bizarre and distracting.

    • Kali says:

Sorry Lucy, latent hate from my bellycupping cousin who’s now graduated to stfuparents worthy :(

  7. JessicaC says:

Kerry Washington looks lovely. Her style is hit or miss with me, but I like this dress and styling.

Lupita: too little girl, and the dress is just ugly.

Michelle: huh? That dress is… Yikes.

Laura looks ok, but I hate the shoes.

    • Curious Cole says:

      +1 to everything.
I’m wondering what happened to Michelle this awards season? She did well her first two years, now it’s miss after miss.
I’m not loving Lupita’s look here (gasp); but I hate the girly headbands on everyone, no matter their age.

  8. Observer says:

    I really love this look.
The girly feminine frilly dresses and accessories really suits Lupita. It’s refreshing and cute and suits her cute face.
I want to see more feminine, soft and girly dresses on Lupita. Often times black girls get the dark and very boring mature dresses that sometimes look dowdy and very business like. Same with make up,; dark lips, dark blush etc
As you can see, the opposite often looks better.

  9. Em' says:

I love Michelle’s dress. it’s so fresh and fun. It’s Beautiful.
Laura is picture perfect and I don’t loathe the shoes, they fit her outfits.
I do not like lupita’s dres thought,

  10. lucy2 says:

I like Lupita and Kerry’s dresses. Very event appropriate.

  11. Valois says:

    The beauty… i just don’t see it.

  12. Kiddo says:

She looks cute. I like the appliqués and the mini aspect of the dress, but the color is a little underwhelming for her. She might have brightened it up by using some of the crazy turquoise or blue eye shadow with this dress, mimicking the tiny flower details. Instead, they went with lipstick matching hues. She looks perfectly pretty, but it’s not as wowza as it could be. At least it’s not awful, like you see with some.

  13. rep says:

Last week I heard Meryl Streep tell Jimmy Kimmel what it was like for her at her first Oscars. She spoke about sitting across from movie star legends Who seem to remain private and mysterious. I want Lupita to appear private and mysterious.

  14. shellybean says:

Lupita’s dress is adorable! I think it needed different shoes though.

  15. lisa says:

I think Lupita’s dress is lovely on her. She is a lot like Cate Blanchett, in my opinion. Both are so elegant. They elevate whatever they wear. Both have worn dresses and look fabulous when the same dress would appear dreadful on someone else.

  16. jane16 says:

That vintage dress is a work of art and looks fabulous on Lupita. Whoever is styling her is doing a first rate job.

  17. smee says:

I would hate that dress on pretty much everyone but her. Looks great with her skin-tone and body shape (which is slamming)

  18. Janet says:

Kerry’s dress is a vast improvement over that cropped horror she had on at the awards ceremony, but what’s with the shoes? The shoes clash with the dress and the necklace doesn’t go with anything.

  19. joy says:

Lupita is absolutely a breath of fresh air in a moment in time where young women are being encourage to degrade and debase themselves to be considered valuable. We need more like her. I can’t praise her enough for her refinement, poise and intelligence. She is truly needed to counterbalance the negative examples of womanhood that have been given such powerful platforms in our society today. I don’t know about the rest of you but as a mother of 3 daughters I have literally prayed for a woman of her caliber to land in the spotlight so that our daughters can see that our society values and praises women that attempt to live up to their highest potential.
