Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad at the Golden Globes: botoxy showgirl?

Kate Beckinsale was late to the red carpet because she broke the zipper on her tight, shiny Zuhair Murad sequin mermaid gown. (These photos are from the Warner Brothers after party.) Kate explained to Carson Daly that she had to be sewn into the dress on the way over, but I could barely focus on what she was saying because I was so distracted by her face. She must have gone to the dermatologist for a fill up before the Globes. Kate, 40, looked like a pale imitation of herself. It was sad. I’m the same age as she is, and I understand the urge to get a little something done, but she’s gone too far and it’s very noticeable. I hope this settles for her.

As for the dress, it was over the top, but that’s how Kate rolls. She presented the best soundtrack and best song, along with Diddy and Usher. One of my favorite moments was when Diddy was excited to see Alex Ebert win best soundtrack, for All is Lost, and exclaimed, “he was on a boat with me partying in St. Barts!” Ebert said that Diddy had come up behind him, unbuttoned his jacket and told him to “let it flow”. Then, after U2 won best song, Diddy quipped “let it flow!

Jessica Chastain was in black Givenchy. Jessica’s style is usually off somehow, often around the bustline (it’s true!) So in that respect, this was a good showing for her. The dress could have used some tailoring, but it had a kind of fun, superhero vibe with an avian-like pattern along the front.I dislike this trend of slicked-back air, we’ve seen this style before on Jessica.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus really nailed it in red Narciso Rodriguez. I thought she looked amazing. Giuliana Rancic was drilling Julia for her stay-fit secrets ahead of awards season, and Julia was game, saying that she cut herself off after Christmas and practiced moderation. It definitely shows. Julia was nominated in the supporting actress in a movie category, for Enough Said, and for lead actress in television, for Veep.

Also in red we have Edie Falco in ill-fitting Lanvin. As much as Julia’s dress is tailored and flattering, Edie’s dress is not. It’s a shame. Plus that giant bow at the top is ridiculous. This is a Christmas package of a dress. Edie was up for best actress in a TV series, which went to Amy Poehler for Parks & Rec.

Julie Delpy was more successful in red, in a bright Romona Keveza gown with an asymmetric bustline and full skirt. Some may find this dress underwhelming, but I like the clean lines and how modern it looks. The color really pops, and Julie is styled well with a messy updo and classic makeup. Delpy was nominated for best actress, for Before Midnight. Amy Adams won in that category.

Finally we have Monica Potter, of NBC’s Parenthood, also in Romona Keveza. Monica is so pretty, but this is a bit matronly to me with the sequin top, black skirt and styling. Monica lost out in the TV supporting actress category to Jacqueline Bisset.

I loved Kate’s dress. As for botoxy face…did you see Uma Thurman last night? She had trouble moving her face while talking. It was awful.

    Jessica’s hair is GODAWFUL!

  2. Red32 says:

Diddy was so annoying, making each win about him. Wish he’d stayed wherever he’s been hiding the last 10 years.

    • Kristen says:

Aw, I thought the Diddy moment was cute and unscripted fun.

      • V4Real says:

Also it was Alex Ebert, who whispered in Diddy’s ear about the first time they met. If Diddy had not said anything people would have been wondering what did he whisper to Diddy while accepting his award. So Diddy gets a pass on this one.

    • Sisi says:

I wish they would’ve put an actor on stage instead of …. whatever Diddy is. there were so many talented people in the crowd, shouldn’t be hard to find a more suitable and modern choice.

  3. eliza says:

I have an irrational dislike of Beckinsale. She is a terrible actress and the only career she has is the one her husband gives her by putting her in most, if not all of his movies.

  4. Stef Leppard says:

Kate Beckinsale looks exactly the same on every red carpet.

  5. Nicolette says:

I love Kate’s dress, it’s gorgeous. I’d love to have that necklace Jessica is wearing, and I do like Edie’s dress, bow and all.

    • bella says:

Yes, I love Edie’s dress, too.
It’s elegant and not I’ll-fitting at all.

Kate…ugh…I have an irrational dislike for her, too, but she’s always had a lovely face.
She looks like mannequin face now.
I’m all for fillers if needed, but subtlety works best and only if there’s something to fill.
These women fill things that don’t need filling!

      On Jessica Chastain.
Her hairline is odd and her hair thin.
Why doesn’t she have a stylist working on a better look that addresses the hairline?
Full, very loose curls would fill it out.
I think I’ve seen this look on her once or twice. She should stick to it.

  6. blue marie says:

That’s the wrong movie for Julia, she was nominated for the one with James Gandolfini.. She looks great, btw.
I think Jessica looks good, and pretty much everyone else here is meh.

  7. tifzlan says:

Jessica’s hair is terrible. Looks like me when i wake up in the morning, lmao.

  8. Hannah says:

I really dislike Jessica’s fake eyelashes. OTT.

  9. harpreet says:

Julia Louis-Dreyfus looks amazing, wish I look like that the rest of my 20s!

PS Loved Diddy on stage. too funny!

    • Amanduh says:

Totally agree- Julia Louis-Dreyfus is gorgeous! I’m quite biased as I love love love (yes, still present-tense!) Elaine Benes, but my goodness, she is just a vision!!! Will always adore her…

    • emmie_a says:

Julia Louis Dreyfus is perfect!! I love her. She’s super talented, funny, gorgeous — ugh. Wish I were her!

  10. LAK says:

Did you see Kate’s daughter Lily? She was so cute and adorable. She’s the perfect mix of Kate and her father Michael Sheen.

  11. Not says:

If Kate did Botox…she did it very nice…

  12. Audrey says:

    Kate’s lips are awful

Jessica is too pretty for that hair. Not sure if it’s the dress or person behind her making her look way bigger ghan she is

And Edie needs a new make up team.

    • Florc says:

I thought it was the dress too. The texture of the dress on the hips and waist in other shots has the same “thickening” effect. Not to mention her eye makeup is weird. Someone couldn’t decide between spacing illusions. She is far prettier than this look makes her seem.
Her and hayden seem to be my worsts.

  13. Kiddo says:

What I noticed about Jessica Chastain that I shouldn’t have: An ABUNDANCE of that light diffusing powder make-up on her nose. It was unbelievably noticeable when she was on stage and it gave off a sparkly gold tone. It was so distracting that I couldn’t pay attention to anything else.

  14. Tig says:

Pls find out info on Jessica’s necklace! It literally took my breath away when she presented. It really complimented her lovely shoulders and skin. Yes, I am a fan!

Lilly Sheen is too cute- glad that her parents seem to get along. I think Kate B has an amazing figure- that’s about all I ever notice about her-LOL!

  15. Frenzy says:

Loved Julie Delpy since Europa Europa! I don’t care what she wears haha seeing her on the red carpet was more than enough for this fan! :)

  16. Ice Maiden says:

Julia and Jessica look great. The others are meh at best.

And yes, Kate has been going way overboard with the botox/lip fillers. And can she act? I ask because other than Kenneth Branagh’s ”Much Ado About Nothing” back in 1993, I’ve never seen her in anything. She was good in that, but it was a fairly small role, so hard to tell from just that appearance.

    • LAK says:

I love that movie for the opening sequence……

On a different note, Kate has been in loads of stuff before she upped sticks and moved to Hollywood. She’s stuck in action pics now which is a shame because she does have the range and the early films to prove it.

      • Ice Maiden says:

I watched MAAN recently and noted how very very dated it seems. Same is true for all of Branagh’s Shakespeare films, imho. The best is his Henry V, which, ironically, is the oldest and the one made on a tiny budget. In the others, the massive Branagh ego sweeps all before it.

      • lucy2 says:

I’ve seen her in smaller indie movies, and she’s always pretty good. I wish she’d stick to that instead of dumb action movies, where she’s usually not very good but doesn’t have much to work with.

  17. Nessa says:

Kate’s face….. Too much. TOO MUCH! I can’t even. Her face used to be perfection. It is a sad state of affairs when someone that gorgeous needs to f*ck with their face.

    • Florc says:

Smoking and an unhealthy diet gave her very poor skin. This was more apparent years ago. She needs this to maintain it seems.

  18. GlimmerBunny says:

Jessica Chastain looks AMAZING! I love Kate’s dress too but she does look botox-y.

  19. cynicalsmirk says:

I recently watched a bit of a movie called The Last Days of Disco, with Kate Beckinsale. I think it was filmed in 1998. I’m not sure the 2013 version of Kate Beckinsale has any of the original parts.

  20. vanessa says:

Kate looks so much different than the girl in Brokedown Palace. I don’t know why she felt the need to transform herself into a beauty queen. She always looks so generic. Jessica is so beautiful, but she needs a new hair stylist. Julia and Edie look great.

    • Ice Maiden says:

Generic is the word. A shame, because Kate has quite an interesting face – she’s of part Burmese heritage, so a nice mix in features. She really does look like a shop mannequin now, and the fact that she can’t move her face doesn’t really help.

  21. Mara says:

Kate is a very beautiful woman and she looks amazing .

  22. IzzyB says:

I just love Monica Potter. She gave such a beautiful and honest depiction of cancer on Parenthood, it made me tear up a few times. Such a good show.

Her dress here isn’t great but it’s not awful. Maybe a shorter skirt?

  23. lucy2 says:

I loved Kate’s dress – I still think she’s very beautiful, despite a little tweaking now and then. I wish she’d stop though.
Edie, that bow! Bow is a no.
JLD looks amazing. She keeps her choices very sleek and simple, and always looks great.

So…does Jessica do her own hair? Because I’d hate to think she paid someone for that. Her necklace is gorgeous, her dress is nice, and she’s very pretty – but that hair just destroyed the whole look.

  24. Jess says:

I have never understood why anyone cares about Kate. She is beyond boring to me. Her dress is pretty but very safe. Meanwhile, I love Edie but that dress is awful. And Julia rules!

  25. Mingy says:

I adore Julie Delpy. It would’ve been so awesome if she won for Before Midnight!
Kate Beckinsale is stunning..her skin looks pretty good to me..

  26. Diana says:

I still think Kate is stunning even with whatever work she had herself done. Also, I still think Chastain is a goddess!

  27. Maggie says:

Jessica Chastain is the most beautiful actress in HW in my opinion. I dont even care what she’s wearing.

  28. Kelly says:

Kate’s face is tragic. I didn’t even hear what she said since I was so focused on her face.

  29. MisJes says:

Ugh, I have to disagree about Jessica Chastain. This look was TERRIBLE.

The dress was ill-fitted, needed proper tailoring and looked quite frumpy, to be honest. It was a shame because she has such a lovely figure. The make-up, especially those eyelashes, was ridiculous. And, the slicked-back hair did her no favours. This is the worst she’s ever looked, IMO.

  30. Leslilly says:

Kate Beckinsale surprisingly looks better than I expected close-up. On the red carpet, I, too, was distracted by her odd looking face. She looked as if she’d had several layers of skin polished off her face. Bizarre.

Well, shit the bed & roll in it! I thought Monica Potter was Joan Van Ark for a hot second. Eesh!

It feels like all the stylists got together this time and said “the theme is terrible hair”.
