Is John Mayer’s new single “Paper Dolls” about his breakup with Taylor Swift?

John Mayer and Taylor Swift had a thing several years ago. It was after he and Jennifer Aniston were done, and I personally believe that Taylor was the one pursuing John. I think John and Taylor dated quietly for months before it ended, because it always ends and almost always it’s the guy who dumps Swifty. So, John Mayer broke Taylor Swift’s heart and of course what happened next was inevitable: she wrote a song about it. She wrote “Dear John” which is basically like a F-U to Mayer being a d-bag. Mayer discussed Taylor’s diss in a Rolling Stone interview, saying that Swifty had “humiliated” him and “It made me feel terrible. Because I didn’t deserve it. I’m pretty good at taking accountability now, and I never did anything to deserve that. It was a really lousy thing for her to do.” Swifty later slammed John again, saying she never discusses WHO her songs are about. Which is so dumb.

Personally, I believe several songs on Taylor’s latest album are also about Mayer (I think a big part of “I Knew You Were Trouble” is about Mayer), but sure, she never discusses it. But two can play that game! John just released his new video/single for “Paper Doll”. The song is pretty-ish, it’s one of John’s sad little ballads. But many claim the lyrics are about his thing with Swifty. Also: the video features Joanna Rohrback, the “Prancercise” lady.

Lyric analysts claim that the line “You’re like 22 girls in one” is a reference to Swift’s song “22”. And John repeats the word “red” which is the name of Swift’s last album. But I think most importantly, the song seems to about a girl who is very immature and scattered (in the love department). And that seems to be dead-on. Plus, I think the Prancercise lady is dressed like Swifty. No joke.

This is actually pretty funny. The Prancercise Lady just prancing around. I don’t disklike Taylor but I cant wait to hear what she has to say lmao. He’s really clowning her this whole song

    • lisa2 says:

I too hope it is about her; just for the reaction. Interesting to see if she thinks it is fine. Especially since that is what most of her songs are about. broken relationships

      • Naye in VA says:

He basically spends the whole song saying “you’re so flighty”, but to back it up with this video…pure immature genius. My inner bitch loves this

    • littlestar says:

I saw this video on D Listed yesterday and just assumed the Prancercize lady made it all up on her own. So John Mayer actual had a say in this video? I dislike John Mayer immensely, but that is pretty darn funny if this is the actual video to the song.

  2. Anna says:

If this is true, it is totally delicious!

  3. TorontoE says:

There is also a line “Someone’s gonna paint you another sky” which references Dear John where she says “You paint me a blue sky..And go back and turn it to rain”

THese two highly mature artistes deserve each other (as exes)

    • brin says:

They should prance away in the sunset (separately of course).

    • Lindsay says:

And the scarf from All Too Well… He sure listens to A LOT of her music and of course thinks every song is about him.

I agree they both totally deserve each other and the aggravation and public shaming they are causing/doing to each other now.

      • Emily says:

“Strap into some heels that hurt” = “He didn’t like it when I wore high heels” (Begin Again)? This game is fun!

  4. Toot says:

Don’t like John, but Taylor does it all the time so no problem with him doing it too.

    • Jane says:

      I love it. It’s like payback is a b****!

      • Anna says:

Lots of people have written songs about Taylor already (Jonas Brothers’ “Much Better” , for example). People only remember Taylor’s songs because they’re well-crafted.

  5. Sharra55 says:

Damn you, Mayer. I like the song!

  6. SW says:

Did I miss it when he said “red”? I don’t get it…lol. A lot of filler in that song. The “22 girls in one… And none of you know what your running from” lines are good…but lots of odd lines….the sky line was okay. I like his music and voice, but this was weird. Maybe ts the weird prancercice lady….she seems sweet, but really uncomfortable.

  7. evie says:

    Lol finally! Team Mayer!

    • Risa says:

Shudder. That guy is a narcissist. He needs treatment. He’s so old for a girl who was 19.

  8. Emily says:

I think its great that he wrote a song about her. I think he’s a douche, but it’s funny that Swifty is getting it back. The song doesn’t say anything harsh, just what we all think – she’s scattered and knows nothing about love.

I find it interesting he mentions her scarf. In one of her new songs she talks about a man still having her scarf (I always thought it was Jake).

  9. BooBooLaRue says:

The two of them are so gross, they deserve one another.

  10. mia girl says:

I’m all for dueling songs, but if I listened to the song with no primer it just sounds more like this is about a model type who rejected him. Maybe Im being too literal with the Paper Doll thing…

I can’t imagine his convoluted, tortured soul actually cared that much about Swifty. It’s the ones he can’t get that he seems to pine for. Maybe he threw in the 22 just to screw with her.

    • SW says:

Haha….that’s a funny thought. It’s just a song, but he tossed in a few references to f^ck with swiftly….LMAO!

    • Anna says:

That’s not the main Swift connection. ‘Painting a sky’ – that’s a very specific turn of phrase and no way is he not referring to “Dear John”

  11. lori says:

I don’t think much of the song…..his time has really past. But I love that he’s whinge-y enough to do that, and I kinda think she has it coming to her anyways.

    • Anna says:

Why do you say she had it coming? Lots of people have written about her – Love and Theft, Parachute, Owl City, Jonas Brothers. Even Mayer has already written about her – ‘Shadow Days’.

      • Nerd Alert says:

Have they all confirmed that? It seems like a weird thing for all those artists to just come out and say.

      • Anna says:

Yes, Love and Theft and Owl City confirmed their songs were about Taylor.

Joe Jonas wrote a song about how Camille Belle was much better than “the superstar with all those teardrops on her guitar” – a clear reference to an early Taylor song.

John never confirmed ‘Shadow Days’ was about Taylor but the lyrics are similar to things he said about Taylor in live concerts (confessionalism and honesty aren’t the same thing etc). Also, the New York Times’ music critic thought ‘Shadow Days’ was about Taylor.

      • Carolina says:

Shadow Days isn’t about Taylor, Taylor’s mom–oh, sorry, I mean, “Anna”

  12. Meaghan says:

I can’t deny that I love John Mayers music. I’m not usually into that slow folky kind of thing, more of a metalhead, but he makes some beautiful music.

    • lisa2 says:

I say it with no shame. I like a lot of his music.

    • Hakura says:

@Meaghan – I *really* loved his 1st 2 albums… But knowing what sort of complete ass he is makes me hate that fact.

    • Nerd Alert says:

Okay sorry. I go to a lot of metal shows, and I’ve never heard of another metal AND CB fan so I just had to do that.

      • Meaghan says:

\nn/ Put your horns up!!! I have never come across one before either, we are a rare breed ;)

      • Nerd Alert says:

        \nn/ \nn/

Cyber thrash party! Love it. We ARE a rare breed! I love metalhead women. And metalhead men, actually. They’re so…surprisingly chivalrous and kind.

Well, to most people. I was at a show last week right by the baseball stadium and all these dumb jocky Rockies fans were heading to a game and some of them were making fun of the people in line, mostly the women for how they were dressed.

This giant guy ahead of us in line goes “if one more dumb jock insults a lady again, I’m going to scare the piss out of him.” So sure enough, one did, coughing the word “slut” and he metal-growls something very offensive that I can’t repeat here for fear of being banned (not racist or bigoted, just a scary threat). The guy backtracked and he and his friends literally ran away while we laughed and laughed.

  13. BreeinSEA says:

John makes the funniest derp faces, singing or not.

  14. Kristine says:

    could also be Katy Perry

  15. Imogen says:

Just to fact check Swift DID say who I Knew You Were Trouble was about — her first relationship with Harry Styles. She confirmed it in the Sunday Times interview, so it def was not about Mayers!

    • Emily says:

Except the song was released before she started dating him. It’s like she’s not even trying to make her showmances credible. :P

      • Anna says:

She actually said her Brit Awards performance was directed at Styles, not the song itself …although it’s possible the song was written about him. They first dated for about six weeks in March & April 2012 but broke up after he was photographed kissing another girl while on tour in New Zealand.

  16. Elizabeth says:

Swifty has it coming. The prancercise lady is great!!! LOL!!!

    • Anna says:

I’ve already mentioned this upthread but lots of people have written about her – Love and Theft, Parachute, Owl City, Jonas Brothers. Even Mayer has already written about her – ‘Shadow Days’.

  17. lisa says:

    prancercise lady is mesmerizing

im no swifty fan but he is how old? he is protesting too much imo

  18. Hakura says:

Turn-about is fair play… *shrugs* It is nice to see her getting a dose of her own medicine. I suspect upon 1st hearing it, Swifty made a face like she’d just tossed back a dose of Nyquil.

    • Raquel says:

True…it’s about time a guy did it to Swift. I always thought it was incredibly immature of her to trash her exes in songs that would be open to the public. What is she, twelve?

      • Anna says:

You’ve never heard the Jonas Brothers’ “Much Better” then? (Lucky you!) Lots of people have written songs about Taylor and yet they’re not as successful as her, which suggests that her songs have something more than just gossip to recommend them – they’re well-crafted and relatable.

It’s not a new idea to trash your exes. Even Joni Mitchell was famous for it in the 60s – she thrashed Jackson Browne’s CHILD after their romance went sour. I don’t know why people act like Taylor’s the first songwriter in history to write in a confessional style.

      • Apsutter says:

Anna, get over it. Taylor’s made an entire career of singing about all her little boyfriends . If she doesn’t want her exes to strike back then maybe she should stop dating musicians, there’s a thought. And please don’t compare Joni freaking Mitchell to Sparkleprincess. Joni is a freaking goddess and one of the best songwriters of all time while Taylor still writes like an immature 15 year old

      • Anna says:

I have no problem with people writing songs about Taylor. I’m pointing out that it’s factually incorrect to say that nobody has written songs about her.

I didn’t compare Swift to Joni MItchell. I said Swift didn’t invent confessional writing, which is true.

  19. Shauna says:

I wanted to stop watching but that prancercise woman kept me on the hook. She’s strangely, and awesomely, fantasizing.

    • stinky says:

agreed. thanx Celebitchy for turning me onto “Prancercise”! omgomgomgomg I’m DOING it this weekend (w/ chihuahuas in tow)

  20. Alyce says:

If it is a battle of the songs, I’d go with Swifty. Her lyrics in Dear John are actually rather clever while these lyrics are random.

  21. Sal says:

“I Knew You Were Trouble” has been confirmed to be about Harry Styles, I believe. And how is this woman dressed like Swift? I see no virginal, glittery white dress. :)

    • Anna says:

Ugh. It’s 2013, come on. There is nothing virginal about white dresses. Don’t make assumptions about women’s sex lives based on the color of their clothes.

      • bluhare says:

Anna, it’s apparent you’re a fan, and if there weren’t something virginal about white dresses, women wouldn’t wear them as wedding dresses. That’s the whole point.

And Taylor Swift has made an entire career about the Nice Girl Who Gets Dumped By Horrible Men, so what if someone calls her on it?

      • Anna says:

I am a fan but didn’t mention Taylor in my reply. But if you want to discuss Taylor in particular – she has written about having sex since her very first single (“Tim McGraw”) in 2006.

  22. Ok says:

    1) what a BORING music video
    2) very budget to produce
    3) I think it is interesting that at the beginning of the video the prancing actress says “if you are pregnant or nursing…..” There was a blind item about Mayer getting Swifty pregnant during their relationship and her having to get an abortion.

  23. Norman Bates' Mother says:

I hate Mayer’s persona and I usually hate his songs, but I appreciate him as a guitarist. When I first read he was mentioned as one of those new “guitar gods” in the same breath with Greenwood and White, I laughed, but after reearching him a little bit I have to agree, he is a very good guitarist but he lacks ambition. Since he became a celebrity, all his songs are generic, uninspired and vanilla. This song has a nice melody but it gets boring after a minute as if he was so focused on dissing Swift (which she deserved and good for him), that he didn’t have time to write music and just repeated the same chords again and again, except for one very short solo. I wish a person who managed to successfully cover Hendrix’s Voodoo Child wouldn’t waste his talent like that.

    • bluhare says:

The fact that it gets boring after a while definitely evokes Taylor Swift for me. :)

    • Nerd Alert says:

I agree! I saw him open for someone at Red Rocks back in the day and he was brilliant then. Still, he’s lazy and doesn’t use his skill to make really great songs, which is a waste.

      • Asiyah says:

I think he got caught up more in the celebrity lifestyle than the music/artistic lifestyle. That’s what has him so lazy.

      • Nerd Alert says:

        Asiyah, I think you’re right. He’s soooo…Hollywood douchetastic.

  24. Sumodo1 says:

Boy, Mayer surely wanted EVERYBODY to see those lyrics…because the Prancercize lady is just a trendy backdrop. Genius, Mister Douche, genius!

  25. Nerd Alert says:

Oh, so THIS is what John Mayer is good for. Antagonizing Taylor Swift. Her songs grate me, and her oh-so-fake “I’ll never tell” schtick is WAY overdone, just like her faux persona. I’ve been waiting for someone to give her a dose of her own medicine, and JM is just douchey enough to stoop to her level. So just this is the one time, I’m Team Mayer.

  26. Zombie Shortcake says:

Calling someone a paper doll is like calling them a clothes horse; it’s what we make fun of Waity for being. I think paper doll is meant as an insult in this context.

  27. Leah says:

They should get back together! They are perfect together!

  28. amanda says:

    From Urban Dictionary

    4. paper doll

An attractive young woman that may or may not be smart, who is lacking substance. A girl who is successful by society’s standards but really has nothing to say. Lacks depth. Oftentimes travel in groups with other dolls.

  29. Chicagogurl says:

Is paper doll code for 2 dimmensional? Would be kind of awesome if it was.

  30. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Even as a Taylor fan, I don’t have a problem with this – there are two sides to every story so.. *shrug*.

  31. melma says:

Go to bed Anna, you’re drunk.

  32. Original A says:

Ha. Actually, it wasn’t as harsh as it could have been. He’s basically just calling her shallow and lost in the world. Love Prancerize lady, too :)

  33. Feisty says:

This jackass (Myers) was in his 30s and dated a girl in her earliest 20s who writes songs about relationships. WTF did he think was going to happen? I have no sympathy for him, he is an ass of the highest order.

    • eatingpie says:

Takes two to tango. I doubt Mayer dragged Swifty out on dates against her own will, douche he may be.

  34. Ginger says:

    One turn deserves another

  35. Str8Shooter says:

When is someone just going to smack the s**t out of this ugly dbag!!!

  36. Ashley says:

ooooo sh*t this song was just like a sour tart lemon juice in you FRAPPE Taylor….

    hot damn this is brilliant…

he’s talking about soo much in soo little and i couldnt help but geek out on the prancing lady….
