Jonah Hill’s low-carb diet has given him ‘meat mouth,’ despite his hygienic ways

Although Jonah Hill has been puttering around Hollywood for several years now (thanks in large part to becoming part of Judd Apatow’s cool kid club), he very rarely makes the gossip pages. In this week’s Star, however, Jonah is making waves for a not-so-good reason. I thought Jonah was pretty great in his amusing role as a Klu Klux Klan idiot in Django Unchained, and I’m sorry to hear about the alleged after affects of his mostly-meat eating habits.

If you’ll remember, Jonah went on a major diet and lost a dramatic amount of weight shortly after he appeared alongside Brad Pitt in Moneyball. According to this week’s issue of Enquirer, Jonah is apparently so afraid to gain the weight back that he’s almost entirely cut out carbs and is basically attempting to live long term on some sort of Atkin-esque diet. As a rule, people often use low-carb diets to lose weight quickly, but those diets aren’t healthy in the long term because they’re very hard on the kidneys. In conjunction with danger to the kidneys, one side effect of cutting out carbs is a dangerous condition called ketosis, which often causes affected people to smell like acetone. So even though the Enquirer never mentions ketosis, I suspect that this condition is part of the problem of which the tabloid speaks. Allegedly, Jonah favors meals of meat laced with onions and garlic, and it’s becoming a major problem in his social circle. Poor guy:

Jonah Hill is doing his best to watch his weight, but a low-carb diet he’s been following has left him with terrible bad breath!

Although the 29-year-old Superbad star cut back on booze and greasy food as part of a bid to get in shape, his stinkmouth — which pals say is a result of his mostly-meat meals — is driving people away.

“He has rancid breath all the time,” revealed an insider. “People have started calling him ‘meat mouth’ behind his back. The sad thing is that Johan is actually superhygienic.”

As the Enquirer previously reported, 5-foot-7 Jonah tipped the scales at well over 200 pounds but dropped 40 of them in 2011 by following a strict diet and fitness regimen. He’s since gained back some of that weight and is fighting to at least maintain where he’s at now, according to the source. It’s not unusual for low-carb, high-protein diets to make your breath stink. When the body metabolizes protein, ammonia is produced. When people eat high-protein meals, there tends to be increased ammonia in their breath and urine. In large amounts, this can smell pretty bad.

“Jonah has basically cut out carbs to keep his weight down, and the staple of his diet is meat,” the insider explained. “To add flavor, he piles on garlic and onions, so his breath is toxic! He smells like a big garlic beef ball!”

Helpful pals have pointed out the problem, and Jonah has started popping breath mints — but that hasn’t helped much.

“They make him smell like a minty garlic beef ball,” said the insider. “It’s strange because he’s a really clean guy. He takes two showers a day, and he loves cologne. He doesn’t seem to realize how bad he smells and it’s taking a toll on anyone who gets too close to him.”

Well, I hope in addition to warning Jonah about bad breath, someone convinces him to start seeing a nutritionist instead of trying to rely upon potentially harmful fad diets. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with eating carbs, and nutritionists still say that they should make up the largest portion of one’s diet. Carbs are fine, and carbs are essential. I hope Jonah learns to not fear the carbs. He seems like such a nice, fun-loving guy.

    If you’re trying to lose weight, there absolutely IS something wrong with eating carbs, especially refined ones. Even if you’re not trying to lose weight, you’d probably benefit from cutting down on refined carbs. One theory is that our bodies simply aren’t evolved to eating lots of carbs, as they’re a relatively recent addition to the human diet, at least in the quantities commonly eaten today.

        I eat a high protein, low carb diet – and get most of my carbs from vegetables and dairy. It is almost impossible to eat a no carb diet in the long term!

        If I let white carbs (bread, pasta, rice) back into my diet I get carb belly (looks like mid life belly) and gas that could strip paint!

        I am diabetic hence my diet choice and have been VERY successful in keeping my blood sugar under control (with the help of medication) thereby avoiding insulin use for the time being – woo hoo!

        I was just going to say my boyfriend is type diabetic, eats lite carb, and does fine. Its hard, but white breads/processed carbs and sugars can really eff up his life. His carbs are from fruit and veggies and dairy too. not everyone who does low carb is protein shakes and boiled chicken. It can be hard but healthy.

      The ONLY thing that runs a human brain is glucose, which comes from breaking down carbs.

      Rosie – the body absolutely does not need carbs. One *can* exist very well on an all meat diet.

      Sweet Dee – the brain does not need glucose necessarily to run. The body can break down fat and the brain can run on that, but glucose is the first thing the body burns.

      @Seagull I may be misreading your comment. Are you saying that the brain doesn’t need glucose in the short term or that we can go without it altogether? Because the latter isn’t true. The body needs glycogen to run, which comes from the breakdown of glucose. If one’s glucose gets too low (<50mg/dl is considered critical by most laboratories), then the body's processes start slowing down and the person becomes lethargic and possibly confused. If they stay "critical" too long, then death can even result.

      Pirouette – yes, it can, at least historically when meat was fattier and pasture raised. I wouldn’t want to do it, and I can’t imagine the constipation, but it can be done.

      Lisa Marie – severe epileptics on very low carbohydrate diets manage to do fine.

    It’s not even healthy to stay on ketosis for long periods of time – carbs are essential for human being. There really is nothing wrong with eating carbs, the key is the quality and right choices. Carbs does not automatically translated into refined sugar, there are healthy choices available.

      No one technically *needs* carbs. Traditional Inuit diets and a few others were nearly 100% meat and their bodies were very healthy. Some people can’t make healthy choices. I’m assuming you’ve never had a weight problem. It’s condescending and the opposite of helpful to tell people with weight problems how simple it is to be thin.

        While I agree that it’s counterproductive to suggest that it is easy to shed the pounds – It’s equally unhelpful to use a completely different demographic to represent all body types and how they use food for fuel. Inuits come from generations of meat/fat eaters and are genetically conditioned to process large quantities of protein with low volumes of carbs. Genetics plays a big part in whatever he should and shouldn’t eat to maintain health and another big reason why I agree, he should seek a nutritionist’s professional help.

        The Inuit are just one example. Moreover, it seems that many people do very well and are very healthy on a low carb diet. Are you suggesting that the Inuit have some sort of adaptation that separate them and their digestion from the rest of us, as if they were another species? I would not care to eat the traditional diet of people in the Arctic, but my body could get from it the nutrients it needed, same as everyone else, barring a metabolic disorder.

        She’s not suggesting they’re “another species” FFS! She’s saying that the Inuit have different tolerances and dietary needs than people who haven’t spent the last 20 000 years eating high fat fish in the arctic. They also have a slightly better tolerance for cold. It’s been proven. Also, you do know that if they don’t get the higher meat content in their diet and eat too many carbs their diabetic rates skyrocket. It’s not racist! It’s the equivalent of saying people with an south Asian background such as myself tend to have low tolerance for dairy whereas people from England and the Netherlands can drink milk well into adulthood. The fact is Jonah could probably handle the meat if he was raised from infancy that way but no one can dramatic change their diet over the course of a year and not expect side effects. Personally, if you want to lose weight, get on the damned treadmill and keep going and eat a varied diet in reasonable sized portions throughout the day. Works for me.

        The quality of conventionally raised meat and poultry is very low in this country & is laced with lots of drug residue, though I suppose he can afford the good stuff.

        Their bodies are not healthy, they are constantly tearing down and rebuilding muscles to fuel their brains because they lack a source of glucose and glycogen to feed it. Their immune systems are weakened and their brains function at a lower capacity.

      Ketosis is not dangerous. You have to drink enough and are still allowed 40 – 80 g of carbs per day. The body easily can gain the glucose it needs from protein. Only a pre-existing kidney problem makes it unhealthy. And even low carb diet means that up to 80 g per day (depends on the type and how long you do it) are possible. If you eat healthy vegetables that is a lot.

      I did very low carb for a long time, and I run, man would I stink when I ran. You get hotter, first of all, and then your sweat smells like ammonia. And I would sweat all night, sometimes soaking pillow case, I was like a stinky, moody, inferno.

      Sorry, but i disagree. I eat a very low carb diet,but most of my carbs are from fruit and veggies. I dont think you need to eat grain to be healthy….i ate mostly moderate carb diet and was always fat and exercised like a fiend…i also am gluten sensitive. I lost weigt eating low carb and have maintained my weight easily for the past few years….and my labwork is always normal….so no the human body does not need lots of carbs…i certainly dont

    Bedhead: correction, extremely low carb diets are only a challenge to the kidneys if one already has bad kidneys. And low carb diets, when done properly, involve oodles and oodles of low carb veggies like salad greens, celery, artichokes, hearts of palm, etc.

    While bread and cakes and cookies and junk food are certainly pleasurable, no one needs them. Some of us gain weight on them more easily than others. I have no idea whether or not Jonah is doing a low carb diet “correctly,” but when so done, they’re the only way some of us can maintain a normal body weight.

    My husband used to do bodybuilding competitions so I get it. Imagine a guy eating a dozen eggs a day and this might be TMI but holy rancid roots Batman. I couldn’t wait til comp season was over

    So, why does not he proceed with a variation of gastric by-pass? I forgot the name for the safer one, where they clip a particular part of his stomach, and as a result a patient never has a sense of hunger. It’s a better solution than being subjected to a potentially lethal kidney disease…

      Sleeve gastrectomy? Also “cures” diabetes for some reason. Not sure if it’s a permanent state but hours after the procedure, blood sugars return to normal.

      I was thinking, “Jonah, get a lap-band & stop torturing yourself.” I feel for him.

      And carbs are a nightmare for diabetics. I realize how simplistic that sounds, but after I developed Type 2, I went grocery shopping the first time & wandered the aisles like a lost soul, putting things in the cart & then taking them out. Almost everything I was accustomed to was forbidden.

    My SIL is on a diet plan that follows those principals she has lost about 40 lbs since November…She looks great, but I am not willing to jump at that until I can see for myself that it actually is sustainable once she moves to “real food” again. I am very skeptical.

      I notice so many people dropping gluten and carbs, and all that to lose weight. Once they lose it they transition back to ‘normal’ foods and end up gaining it back quickly.

      Right now, we’ve started going to the gym about 4 times a week (gave up last week since we both had a nasty cold) and just eating smaller portions, and trying to avoid carbs to a degree. Nothing over the top. We still eat sandwiches occasionally. I’d rather spend more time to lose the weight and stay in a diet that I can stick to than completely drop a certain food group and go back to it later.

    I have been on a low carb diet for years and my doctor says that my blood work is like a work of art. Starches and sugars are very, very bad for you and should be avoided. I eat healthy fats, protein, and loads and loads of veggies.

      I feel better when I don’t eat a lot of bread and pasta, but the Italians eat it… I know they do much smaller portions, but WTF? And once I hit 40 I have a pooch I can’t get rid of.

        The italians have more or less only one real meal a day. Breakfast often consists of an espresso and maybe a small cornetto (something like a croissant). Lunch often is a salad or a sandwich. In the evening a full meal consists for example of a salad, then some pasta, than some fish or meat, but only with vegetables. I’m often in Italy and I love the food there (I live in a neighbour country) but is less carby than you think.

        Italians also walk everywhere so the burn off the sugar/starch. That’s the key to eating a fairly high starch diet……burn it off with exercise.

        Add up the carbs. The first phase of Atkins, just one of the many low carb diets around, requires vegetables, up to 20 grams of carbs worth a day. As you move through the phases, you’re supposed to add back more carbs, most always in the form of veggies. A healthy low carb diet is protein and veg.

    Going on a low carb diet is not unhealthy!! It doesn’t equate to kidney problems and it is ridiculous to put a blanket statement on that. I guess most people have bought into the government’s recommended diet which actually has been making us fatter and unhealthier than before. Saturated fat is okay, fat is great, and using fat as fuel (ketosis) is fine. Ketoacidosis is what can happen in diabetics and is not good. I have been on a low carb diet and I can run half marathons on using mostly fat for energy. Both complex and simple carbs turn to sugar and spike insulin.

      I agree. I find it kind of funny that such a huge percentage of the population is unknowingly addicted to carbs and have therefore convinced themselves that eating a rice cake will cause them to loose weight

      Agreed. Ketosis is NOT the same as ketoacidosis. I’ve been on a low-carb diet for a while now and I’ve never felt better. Much better than on a low-calorie, high-carb, high-dairy diet that most dieticians prescribe for weight loss.

      Of course, that’s just me, and everyone’s metabolism and lifestyle is different. Ketosis is not a ‘dangerous condition’, that’s all I’m saying.

    I do Keto (putting your body in a state of Ketosis) while I’m playing football. Aside from getting a metallic taste in my mouth, I haven’t had any ill effects. You don’t *need* massive amounts of carbs–even though they’re tasty, god living in the South next to your grandma is a bad thing when you’re trying to eat like that!–as long as you count carefully what you eat.

    Husband tried it but he’s German and missed bread. He lasted a month. Lost a metric butt-ton of weight but he just couldn’t take it. It’s not for every one.

    Jonah has a LONG road ahead of him until he can get his weight under control and just be happy with it. After he lost that weight he started putting quite a bit back on and would get very pissy when people would talk about it. I’m thinking he’s incredibly insecure and I don’t blame him, it must have been a lot of work to lose all that weight. Sooner or later he’ll have to realize that he’s not meant to be a “size 2″(or whatever men’s sizes are lol) and he’ll have to get VERY SERIOUS about a strict workout regimen to keep it off.

    I’m the exact same way in my weight. Ill never naturally be under 120-125 so when I want to be very fit I have to make a conscious effort to watch what I eat and exercise at least 4-5 times a week. It’s a lot of work but I feel good about myself when I’m taking care of myself and eating healthy. Luckily I prefer myself to have some curves for the 120′s is perfect for me

    Well, I did low carb years ago, and I did lose all the weight I wanted….Even finally got rid of the stuff on my stomach that would never go away.
    BUT, I felt like crap (my body just hurt) and got depressed from it.
    Your body does need serotonin.
    And sorry to sound awful….But he looks like he has gained plenty of the weight he originally lost back already.
    Maybe that’s why he’s so cranky.
    Not eating any bread could make ANYONE cranky!

      Sounds like you are plenty cranky….Maybe you should have some bread…

      There are some theories about what is called “comfort food” and their effect in coping with stress and depression. These theories are pretty well established scientifically, so I can see what ZigZagZoey means with her comment.

      Metabolism differs greatly from person to person, as well as our psychological traits, so this concept of comfort food will not work for everyone (in the same way that some people cope with stress by not eating at all, and other by eating a lot). Different people will have different experiences and what works for one doesn’t work for another, so the most important is to not follow some diet as some miracle solution for success. Might work or not…most important in the end is to keep an equilibrium in what we eat and to exercise frequently IMO.

      Thank you zigzagzoey and you are absolutely right!IF YOU ALREADY SUFFER from depression then a low carb diet is not good for you.I just found that out the hard way.i just left a low carb diet because my doctor told me that it was dangerous for SOME people that are prone to depression.Now I am losing weight the right way with whole grains and fruits and vegetables.Low carbs diet are fine but they’re just not for everyone.
      And the reason you probably had no energy is because we get most of our energy from carbs and without them it is hard to exercise.Another reason why people with depression should not do Atkins.

        I had the exact opposite reaction and it was my doctor who suggested that I would be happier on a low carb diet. He was right – I am much, much happier when I don’t eat bread and cake and grains.

      ZZZ – I did a low-carb diet years ago too (a modified Atkins/South Beach kind of thing), and let me just say that the first four or so days without bread/potatoes were just AWFUL withdrawal days. After that, I didn’t really crave them. But unless it’s something you stick with for a lifetime, the weight comes back. And a lifetime of Atkins is NOT healthy.

      Now I opt for “good” carbs (whole grains, brown rice, veg) and still stick with the lean proteins.

      eta: Mum always told me “There’s a reason your body is craving (whatever it is). EAT SOME.” And since she was a nutritionist, I listen to this day.

        It kinda blows my mind how you do get such bad cravings if you start eating bad!
        I try to limit my carbs now, but I don’t get rid of them completely. With me, the biggest thing is portion size. It’s hard to stop eating before you feel full!

        Bellaluna’s mum gave her a very good advice. Indeed cravings have a function. Our body is not stupid and communicates with our brain very well. The fact that you crave for an ice cream might well be because you need it in that moment to make you happy, or you need some specific nutrient in that moment. It’s all about equilibrium…if you have cravings everyday and you are unable to control them that will be a problem. I don’t see where that goes against the low carb diet theory. There’s also a lot of evidence that food with low glycemic index are healthier on the long run, but that doesn’t mean that if you don’t do a low carb diet you can only do a high carb diet, there’s a middle term. Different people, different metabolisms and different needs.

        You will only crave for nicotine after you made it an addiction and then your body needs it to return to normal levels of calmness. As I said, everything that becomes a recurrent craving has a bad function. But even with smoking some controversial studies showed that the health outcome of completely stopping smoking for high cravers could be worse than continuing smoking…Stress and psychological diseases might have way worse effects in your health than eating a burger every now and then. Of course that if you can be happy and psychologically healthy without smoking and eating high carbs, cool!

        misnomer – I’m talking about food, not alcohol/nicotine. When a body sends out a “craving” it generally means it needs a nutrient/mineral in said food. (For instance, I have been craving Brussells sprouts lately, and have been eating them every day.)

        As far as KFC, I don’t eat it, so I can’t help you there.

    My question is though is he only dieting? Since if he is not exercising he is not losing weight the healthy way. You cannot just eat only meat which is what the article is talking about. You really will get rancid breath. I had a friend that did the Atkins, meat only diet around month two I noticed it too. I had no idea that just eating meat only could cause the rancid breath I just noticed she did not smell so fresh/so clean anymore.

        Really? I can’t lose weight with just dieting I have to work out. Actually on days that I work out and eat reasonably healthy are the days when my weight tends to drop for me.

        Exercise does nothing to aid weight loss; more and more studies are bearing this out. That’s not to say it has no benefit – it has tons of them, from mood elevation to cardiovascular health to blood sugar regulation. But one doesn’t need to exercise to lose weight. My sister lost forty pounds without exercising. Now that she is a smaller size she’s starting to exercise and she’s says it’s so much more fun and so much easier than when she’s try when she was larger.

    Eating too much meat makes your stomach exhausted because it takes a lot of energy to digest. On the other hand, being vegetarian is no fun either.

    I’ll have to respond to you again that ketosis is only safe for a very LIMITED period time. In a long run, it’s very damaging to kidneys.

    I’m on a diet for people with depression, bipolar, etc. who are on mental health medications. Nearly ALL of these medications that certain people (like me) need to function properly also cause weight gain. I find it so frustrating! So, I started the Seratonin Power Diet which encourages you to use carbs as medicine for the body. Carbs are a “feel good” food for a reason! This coupled with healthy eating (lean protein, veggies and fruits) and cutting down on sugars and stimulants (like coffee) along with exercise and regular sleep patterns have helped me tremendously! I have dropped weight in a healthy manner and my moods have stablized. This was a revelation to me since carbs are demonized so much so that it seems almost counterintuitive to promote them in a diet. BUT it works! I’m just saying that carbs are not the enemy.

      I’m on Effexor and was previously on the devil drug Cymbalta and I have only experienced minimal weight gain, but thanks for that info. I’ve never heard that diet and I will be looking into it.

    I am currently fighting Mr. Rochester on an Atkins type diet. I think he wants to drop the weight quickly but I don’t think it is the right way to go.

    In addition, I have extremely high cholesterol and can not even think about a high protein diet without my arteries closing down.

    (Please do not suggest diet and exercise – I do both and my condition is moderated by a doctor. I have been dealing with this since I was 16.)

    I don’t believe this story about Jonah Hill. I mean – what a mean-spirited and trashy thing to publish about someone that seems so lo-key. I think our society is almost to the place where the MAJORITY of us struggle with carrying too much weight – so really, there’s not much of a story there. Then to try to make it interesting by writing about someone’s alleged bad breath – that’s just mean and screams “No Class!” So many things can cause any one of us to have less than pleasant breath (and/or other bodily waste excrement). Again – BIG WASTE OF PAPER, INK, ENERGY & SPACE!

      I don’t have any trouble believing that his breath is vile from his diet (see my longer post below)… but I agree that having the tabloids focus on it is very uncool, esp. since it’s a side-effect of his efforts to lose weight. But, then again, they’ll print anything to get attention.

    on another note, his hair is naturally very curly. does anyone else find it odd or a turn off when a man straightens his hair? maybe it’s because it seems like such a vain and high maintenance thing to do. a lack of confidence, which is a turn-off.

    I did hardcore Atkins in the ’90s… it works to lose weight, but definitely has some strange side-effects, among them are strong smelling breath, even stronger smelling urine, zero gas and bloating (sounds good, I know, but wait for it) and mostly liquid feces. I always felt greasy when I was on it, since the diet is heavily reliant on meat, cheese and fats. My period came off-cycle once I got into it seriously, as well… which should tell you something about how the body responds.

    Since then, as many of the other posts indicate, a lot has been learned about nutrition, weight loss, metabolism and the human body. I would not recommend it long-term, for all the health reasons that have already been listed. But as an adult that has always struggled with my weight, I understand why some people, esp. celebs, will do anything (even if it harms their body) to drop the pounds.

    I don’t have any trouble believing that Jonah’s breath is vile from his diet. Sadly, what he eats (more than how much he exercises) will have the greatest effect on his physique. I just hope he finds a program that is sustainable and gets his body back to a safer, healthier and less odiferous place. Yuck-o!

      Just out of curiosity how many vegetables were you eating? I’m always curious about how people actually do the Atkins diet. It doesn’t work for me, but slow carbing has worked for me (protein, veggies and legumes at every meal).

    I am sure he is gaining weight because he is cheating on his diet. Homeboy partied in Maimi with Leo, BCoop and Mel Gibson, no way he quit booze. He is prob one of those who have phases during they follow a strict diet and then phases during which he is bingeating and drinking.

      i was waiting for someone to mention the booze. that’s why his face is puffy/boated.
      booze is so bad -all the bad carbs plus poison. plus many people have zero will power after they’ve imbibed and then many feel better or less hungover once they’ve coated their stomach with grease and carbs the morning after. just setting yourself up to fail.
      lindsay lohan has a booze bloated face as well and she’s thin.
      too much booze is easy to see in the face and the gut.

    Reading all this back and forth is intesting. I don’t doubt low carb dieting has health benefits, especially for diabetics. I was 19 years old, great health and went on a NO carb diet. I lived on vitamins and protein only. Ketosis was supposed to be a great thing on the diet. I ended up in horrific pain at the ER with kidney stones. Unheard of in a female at 19 supposedly. You can possibly go from normal kidneys to kidneys that produce too much uric acid….and then stones. It is easier to get rid of them nowadays than when I was a kid in the 1970′s but the pain is so terrible you don’t want it. I imagine having cat litter coming out of you is even worse on a man.

    Yeah, an over animal based diet is not healthy at all. He may be thinner, but I’m certain his blood pressure is high. In California, he has access to a slew of complimentary health services. He would probably do very well seeing a TCM practicioner to get a balance between hot (which make your breath smell and leave your body acidic) and cold foods. Also switching up the onions sometimes with herbs and spices that actually help with bad breath like rosemary and parsley would be a great idea!
    When I eat poorly and my body starts to be odorous, I take Alfafa powder.

    Jonah, or anybody else with this problem, you need Therabreath or one of the couple other products that use the same active ingredient, chlorine dioxide. That stuff works when nothing else does. They make a whole range of products, but the toothpaste, mouthwash, and maybe the portable spray ought to do it. The mints and gum don’t seem to work as well. Most people don’t need something like Therabreath, honestly. But chronic bad breath can be socially crippling. In problem cases like this, it’s the nuclear option. Ask me how I know. (OK don’t actually ask me, as I won’t revisit this page, but this stuff worked for me when nothing else did. Night and day difference.)
