Katie Holmes at the ‘Dead Accounts’ afterparty: lovely & triumphant or fug?

Katie Holmes

Here are pictures of Katie Holmes at last night’s afterparty for the opening of Dead Accounts on Broadway. I decided that showing Katie’s happy, beaming face in the above photograph would prepare you for a full shot of her dress, which is below, and it is atrocious. First though, here’s an update on Suri, who is back in town after allegedly visiting Tiny Tyrant Tom Cruise, who somehow managed to be on the All You Need Is Kill set over the entire weekend. Wherever she went (and I’m still not certain), Suri is back strutting the streets with Katie, who was wearing a really great red coat a few days ago. Suri almost lost her favorite stuffed rabbit, but it was retrieved just in time before their cab pulled away. That poor bunny could really use a run through the washing machine, but that’s just the germaphobe in me talking.

Now onto Katie’s appearance last night. I actually do like the fabric of this dress in theory, but the cut is quite matronly, and Katie could have pulled off a more youthful look for her big celebration night. Also, whatever’s going on in the “bib” area is really a deal breaker. So awful. Otherwise, she looks good with her long, flowing, and lovely hair. The makeup (especially the eyeliner) is a bit heavy-handed, but I’m assuming that a lot of it is leftover from her stage makeup for the evening.

Really though, I’m so happy for Katie. She broke away from Tom, and she’s finally back to doing what she wanted to do — act onstage. Here’s a photo from the curtain call with Josh Hamilton, Norbert Leo Butz, and Jayne Houdyshell as well. Katie needs to get with this Norbert dude even if it’s only a fling.

I like the dress. It favours her body. She looks really pretty. Good for her :) !!

    • sala says:

Me too. Love the dress. I’ve seen her in some horrible outfits, but this is gorgeous.

      • hazeldazel says:

I love the dress too, the japanese style of it with the kimono cut and blocks and tiny flower prints is very pretty! If the tights had been a little more sheer, her outfit would have been perfect!

      • kimcheee says:

My thoughts exactly, hazeldazel. The shiny tights ruin the look.

    • Lisa says:

I don’t like the bib part (wish it were just the same as the majority of the rest of the dress), but otherwise, it’s nice. I also think her makeup looks fine. She looks good.

    • Crystal says:

I like it too. It looks great on her! Although I would have liked it better with sheerer tights and maybe a just tad shorter.

    • Lishka says:

I think she’s wearing them Japanese pressure panty hose that squeeze your legs to make them look skinnier! She has less of a case of “daikon ashi” in these pics! I can actually see ankles!

    • Pandy says:

I love the dress as well and it does suit her figure. Could live without that bib.

  2. TheOriginalKitten says:

Unfortunately, she’s still dressing like she’s in a cult.

  3. sharylmj says:

good for her to be brave enough to make the changes she has made. She is OBVIOUSLY so much happier!! what a tough decision she made. I’m so glad things are working out for her and Suri.
I really really really don’t like that dress… her hair is beautiful though it’s always so shiney!!!

  4. LadyMTL says:

Dead Accounts and a dead-ugly dress. Her hair looks amazing, I’m really jealous.

  5. Newyorking says:

I don’t like the dress, but her happy face overshadows that. So nice to see her happy and free after so long. It suits her.

    • Memphis says:

      +1 agreed!

    • CG says:

I don’t really know how to say this, but “facially” she looks much better since she left TC. Does that make sense? Like, I know when they were together she never wore makeup so that makes a difference, but she just looks so much younger and less tired/stressed since she got divorced. This is literally the best she’s looked in years. The dress is fug, though.

BTW so my roommate’s parents came to visit for Thanksgiving and I saw they had one of the Jack Reacher books in their car, so I asked if they were planning to see the movie and they both went on an epic tirade about how TC is all wrong for the role and they’re boycotting the movie. I was dying laughing!

  6. anemon says:

It’s so nice that she looks happy again.

  7. Starlight says:

I don’t think the dress is pretty at all but then I always like Katie. It doesn’t matter what she is wearing.

  8. emmie_a says:

I’m not seeing the atrociousness of the dress. She looks great, the dress is stylish and appropriate and fits great. My only critique is I’m not crazy about the black tights.

    • Skipper says:

Black tights with the black shoes is the real problem

      • MatildaJo says:

Agreed, Just think of the raves she’d had gotten if she had worn black suede boots, even with the tights. It would have even improved the dress.

  9. heybaby says:

Norbert Leo Butz is married, stop trying to hook her up with a married man lol

  10. Leandra says:

    She has a beautiful face!

  11. Reece says:

Fiyero (Norbert) is married, I think.

As for the dress I would like it if not for gawd awful cut out at the top. Katie’s horrible stance isn’t helping.

  12. mari says:

    OMG, I love the dress!!!

And overall she looks fantastic. Must be the first time I’ve ever thought so.

  13. KellyinSeattle says:

I hate the outfit. And I love Katie, but she’s looking a little worn. Her neck is looking weird…but she does appear happy, and that is great.

  14. Livia says:

It’s a fugly dress, but I don’t care because LOOK AT THAT SMILE! I don’t think I’ve seen her look so happy since before… yeah.

  15. katie says:

yea applaud Katie for getting away from Tom. She’s still so vanilla. I am really happy for her that she has her life back now because I am sure that was very scary. So, she has my respect, but I still don’t think she’s a star.

  16. Alexis says:

Her happiness is radiating from her. It’s wonderful to see after all those years of seeing her look so sad. Dress is ugly, though.

  17. Amory says:

I actually think the make-up is pretty bad. Her face and neck are a different color and she looks pretty washed out.

The dress is ok – it doesn’t seem special enough for the night.

Her reviews have been lukewarm at best, although a few were fairly scathing and others more positive.

Someone else said it best – she is terribly objectionable, but she’s not talented or exciting either.

Bums me out that she gets work for her name rather than her talent. There is far too much of that in this world.

  18. imabrat says:

Not liking the dress so much but she sure does look happy!

  19. neelyo says:

I saw the play a few nights ago. Holmes was kind of bad. Her voice was obviously tired and she was straining. She was also miscast. She and the other TV/Film actor Judy Greer were the weak links and it was obvious they both had little stage experience compared to the others. Thank goodness for Houdysell and especially Butz.

Not to mention the play is pretty pointless. Some funny lines but not much else.

  20. jenn says:

Don’t pay attention to what she’s wearing. See the twinkle in her eyes? The old Katie appears to be back!

  21. laura says:

She seems happy, that is so nice to see! That is the most important :)

    • Trashaddict says:

I agree. The smile says it all. She looks like a huge weight has been lifted off her shoulders. I’m very glad for her. She’s bound to dress a little crazy, that seems like a post-divorce thing and I wouldn’t be surprised if Tom had absolutely dictated everything she wore.

  22. PortlandJan says:

I like the way the dress is cut, but that bib has to go. Also, the pattern looks like she turned Suri loose with a box of crayols and told her to give it her best shot.

  23. Mrs.Krabapple says:

I don’t like the dress. But she looks really happy, and that makes a big difference in her over-all appearance.

  24. ladyballz says:

Seems like she is having another attack of the old cold sores- right under her nose. That chick needs some Valtrex- but holy shit it makes me like her more. That and how she left the ol’ T.C. I wonder if the whole stage thing is linked into why she “must” live in New York.Slick, girl, SLICK!

  25. ojulia123 says:

She looks so happy!! Good for her!

  26. skuddles says:

Ummm sorry but what? That pattern looks like something I used to doodle when I was bored in class… The whole dress is just so strange to me.

Glad to see she looks so happy though – she’s carving out an identify all her own, you go girl!!

  27. Dimebox says:

Could the dress have been better? You bet. But the smile, the sparkle, overshadows everything for me. And she can wear all the heels she wants now. Go Katie!

  28. nancypants says:

Bless her heart! She’s never had much fashion sense BUT she looks so pretty and so happy and sooo much younger since she got out of there!

  29. abby says:

nooooooo. the dress is terrible. the tights with those shoes are awful. she has no business claiming a fashion line. her own choices are horrible. nothing personal against her, I’m sure she’s a lovely person.

  30. decorative item says:

She looks happy. Not just smile on her face happy, but eyes twinkling happy…it’s lovely.
Like most of the dress, but hate the bib part.

  31. LisaMarie says:

Not a fan of the dress, but it’s really great to see her smiling a real smile and not the dead eyed sci-bot side smirk. Divorce suits her well!

  32. Amy says:

I think her makeup (especially her eye makeup!) looks great.

  33. ladybert62 says:

Hate the dress and hate her hair – too long. But she looks happy.

  34. bowers says:

She looks soooooooooooo happy. Who cares about some dress?

  35. CF98 says:

Supposedly that dress used to be her grandmother’s or so I read elsewhere that makes a lot more sense.

As for the reviews well a lot of people thought the play was bad overall so it really didn’t matter about the performances too much but overall I say people thought she was okay.

This is the theater they don’t pander to stars in their reviews….

  36. Green Is Good says:

She gave Tommy-Girl, his cult-leader boyfriend, and CO$ a big middle-finger salute. That alone makes me like her.

  37. mirror says:

It looks like she did her own makeup and she dressed in the dark. The makeup, dress and wide toothy smile are hideous.

  38. Kosmos says:

Yes, the responses here are pretty mixed. I definitely don’t like the dress. Don’t like the color, the bib part, or the mixed up print, which doesn’t do her justice. Also, please do away with the black tights….wow, at least not for an opening night kind of thing. I could have done a much better job dressing her and I have no credentials. However, I am glad to see her doing well and out of the grip of that man, which, by the way, probably earned her a few $ million having married him.

  39. Ranunculus says:

I am so tired of her stupid smirk, can she just go away please

  40. annie says:

I like and don’t like the dress, but I don’t mind what she wears a lot of the time, I always think she looks better than most. You see a lot of stars on the red carpet, or attending a lot of functions, but you always see Katie casual, just doing day to day things.
She must have done something right, got 2 standing ovations, in the play. I think one for the box wine scene, and a rant about Wall Street.
I read the dress is Bortega Veneta.

  41. Kate says:

“Tiny Tyrant” is a great sobriquet for Tom Cruise. At first glance, the bib suggests a stylized bat – it’s a
Rorschach test that would make a good conversation piece.

  42. blonde on the dock says:

I dont mind the dress but she’s looks exhausted to me. Understandable though!

  43. Victoria says:

That smile looks forced, strained and painful. Poor thing. Happiness, GENUINE happiness doesn’t look ten shades of crazy. Plus the veins in her wrists look extra plump. Coincidence? :(

  44. asdfg says:

Fug? Really? I like Celebitchy but the “fug” comparison is ridiculous. She is not “fug”. She looks happy! The dark hair makes her look a little pale but there’s nothing wrong with being pale. I think she looks good. :)

  45. cruiz2 says:

She actually smiled for real – teeth and all! That says alot!

  46. Sugar says:

I don’t give a care about the dress, I am happy to see her looking happy & at peace with herself. She took back her life & it shows.
It would be great to see her make it as a stage actress if that is her dream-forget Hollywood & go Broadway!

  47. Sway says:

I love how happy she looks.

  48. Jayna says:

I like the dress on her except the bib part. She looks okay, but not as cute as years ago. Maybe just older. I like her better with some bangs maybe. It’s photos like this that I can never get over her nose job. Her nose kind of goes sideways or curves more to one side the way the shaved it and thinned it. I saw her in a movie on TV the other day when she was younger with her cute wider nose. She had such an expressive face and beautiful lips back then. I’ve never liked her nose job.

  49. Tuxedo Cat says:

I really admire Katie H. for learning a play while going through a public breakup.
It’s a lot of work learning a new role, and she really nailed it.

She had a career before Tom and will continue on after Tom. Good for her, I say.

  50. Dessa says:

Very attractive lady.Horrible taste in clothes!

  51. mimi (a different one) says:

It’s not the dress, it’s her.
She looks so happy and alive (and pretty!).

It’s been years since I saw her so happy and alive.

    Good for her!

  52. Stephanie says:

So wonderful to see her REALLY smile again!!! Go Katie!!

  53. susan lamb says:

I love her smile and I am sooooo happy she is once again smiling. The midget made her smile with a crooked mouth and it looked ridiculous. She has a beautiful smile and should show it often. Now that she is finally free and happy, I’m sure she will keep it up.

  54. Jaded says:

Baby steps and A for effort. I think you’ll see Katie mature into a reasonably good stage actress over the next 5-10 years. As far as her dress style, she looks fine, but it’s her inner radiance that is shining through – the best thing she did was leave that horrible little prick. She and Suri will have a great life from now on.

  55. annie says:

Jayna , Katie has the same nose I think but she’s slimmer now, she needs at least 10-15 lbs. When you see her in the videos for H Stern jewellery, she’s so beautiful in the closeups, the same in Anne Taylor video.
Sometimes I think, considering how lovely her face is, she doesn’t always take good pics.
    I’m so team Katie!

  56. Tres Jolie says:

She looks lovely and naturally pretty and happy and feminine. She is a unique individual and she is a refreshing change from the rest of young Hollywood.

  57. Amelia says:

What is that weird bumpy patch under her right nostril? It kind of looks like a patch of fever blisters. I’ve seen Katie with herpes-looking fever blisters before, but never that high up. Maybe the stress of the show brought them on.

Her smile is big, her hair is shiny, her eyes are flashing…I’d say she looks a lot happier these days.

  58. Francesca says:

it always falls apart for her in the leg area… boots would have been ok or better at least
