Someone went through Mary-Louise Parker’s trash and told Page Six about it

Celebrities have to deal with a lot of hassles. It’s part of the deal with fame: you get a lot of cash, but you may get a lot of stalkers too. Or maybe just plainly creepy, unnaturally curious people. Some weirdo went through Mary-Louise Parker’s garbage can outside her Washington Square apartment in Manhattan. As if that weren’t creepy enough, the person then wrote to the New York Post to tell them all about it. They included photocopies of Parker’s prescription receipts from a nearby drugstore.

CELEBRITIES who live in Greenwich Village may want to run out and buy paper shredders. Their garbage is being sifted through by creepy trash-trollers who want to bare their secrets. One recent victim is Mary-Louise Parker, the sexy star of Showtime’s “Weeds,” who lives in a luxury apartment building overlooking Washington Square Park.

An anonymous letter was sent to Page Six from someone who claims to have sifted through the actress’ refuse and included photocopies of Parker’s drug prescription receipts from Bigelow Pharmacy on Sixth Avenue. They show that last year she shelled out a $20 insurance co-payment for a supply of 30 tablets of a medication that’s commonly used to treat low-thyroid function and prevent goiters. It was prescribed by a Manhattan internist.

A rep for Parker had no comment, but sources say the South Carolina-born beauty, 44, has been treated for an underactive thyroid for years. Other celebrities who live on some of the Village’s best blocks are even more vulnerable than Parker because they have private townhouses and place their trash in cans easily accessible to passers-by. They include Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker, Liv Tyler, Charlie Rose and Graydon Carter.

One longtime village resident told us, “This is incredibly creepy. It’s like nothing is sacred. I hope they find the nut job who’s doing this.”

[From Page Six]

It’s kind of unclear whether or not what this person did was illegal or just super, super creepy. Once something’s placed in the trash outside, it’s no longer your property. However I’ve heard of people getting arrested for going through people’s garbage cans… so clearly there’s something that could be done.

It’s pretty common practice in New York for people to go through other’s trash. A lot of poor people make money by visiting areas the night before recycling is picked up and collecting all the cans to get the refunds themselves. An old lady and her son do it along my street at about midnight every Wednesday, and they bring a van along. She pushes a cart and fills it up while he keeps pace in the van. I only noticed because at first I thought he was following her and got worried.

Pretty much everyone I know has some stuff in their apartment that they found on the street. Not being a New York native, I find this really, really disgusting. Not in a snobby way, but that’s a great way to transport bugs and God knows what else into your home. I am proud to say that the only thing that’s ever ended up going from the street to my apartment is a child’s chalkboard easel. Roommates do weird things when they’re drunk.

The point is, if you live in New York, celebrity or not, you know that people are going to go through your garbage. Absolutely no one is immune to it. I’m not sure what workarounds there are, but I’d think if Mary-Louise Parker were really private about her thyroid prescriptions, she would have shredded the paper. She probably will from now on, but as creepy as it is I doubt it’s going to be the next upcoming celebrity crime wave as the Daily news suggests.

    Super creepy. *shiver*

Off-topic: That dress is utterly age inappropriate. I love MLP, but put some clothes on!

  2. jess says:

now does she really have an underactive thyroid or is she taking the medicine to up her metabolism?

  3. vdantev says:

    Garbage in- garbage out.

  4. Tess says:

Slightly off topic but Billy Cruddup, her ex and her son’s father,is a nice, understated actor. Loved him in Almost Famous.

  5. Yadira says:

Bill Crudop left her in the middle of her pregnancy for Claire Danes. Not so nice.

The trash thing is ghetto. It’s not people trying to get your cans but people trying to get your secrets to sell.

  6. Tess says:

Yadira: I never expect responsible behavior from celebs….quality entertainment is enuf.

Speaking form experience you can’t be on thyroid hormones to up your metabolism- not for years. It willa ctually damage your system and organs and cause weight gain.
Maybe you could use it for a few weeks at best, but still ont without great side effects (increased BP and heart rate – like a restin rate of 130+) and most importantly adrenal exhaustion. AKA chronic fatigue, and when the adrenals are exhausted or overworkd you have more cortisol which actually leads to overeating and water retention (its just like taking steroids, which in effect are synthetic cortisol- you bloat up and GAIN WEIGHT, not loose it!!)

I know this not because I tried using thyroid meds to up my metbaolism, but because I was misdiagnosed and incorrectly put on them for 7 years. Only now have I discivered what the hell was causing someone like me who hardly ate and excersized sometimes 3 hours a day to NEVER lose a single pound and in fact gradually gain 40 pounds over the years.

    So dont try it!! :P

I adore this woman, great actress!

The only thing that has ever made its way from a curb to my apartment is an awesome crocheted (sp?) framed picture of Big Bird relaxin’ on a pile of hay, eating something as a smaller Big Bird flies overhead. It was on a table with a sign marked “Free Stuff, Please Take”, but still, it WAS on a curb. Still, it looks GREAT in my apartment… ;)

This particular incident with MLP just sounds creepy *shudder*

  11. Bros says:

heehe, what did you finally discover it was?

  12. Cassie says:

I’ve always been curious who celeb’s get their health insurance through, if they have it at all. Apparently they do! Now I won’t stay up at night wondering.

What a shitty deal, though. Twenty for (what’s probably) a generic synthroid? Ha!

Anywho, someone needs to teach these snoopers to keep there mouths shut until they find something a little more interesting than thyroid medication.

  13. heehee says:

Well I complained to doctors all that time but they told me it was all in my head, I was taking the meds wrong, or, that I was being vain to complain about weight gain. I was too superficial.

Actually I requested my oldest medical records from 1999 when I very first saw an endo, and discovered to my dismay that my lab results show I was, and still am, HYPER thyroid, not hyPO.

So all this time they put me on extra thyriod when I already made too much.
Major, major damage. It messes with your head, seriously LOL
I am not at all the same person now that I am taking a thyroid BLOCKER instead.
Now I’m actually losing weight, slowly but surely.

But I think these side effects happen even to hyPO patients, because when you type in thyroid and adrenal, even hypos will complain of adrenal fatigue ad bloating etc. Its just too potent I guess taken all at once and daily, since it stays in the body for up to 20 days- the doses are actually cumulative!

But this isnt a medical blog LOL

  14. Ophelia says:

OMG, I have an underactive thyroid. That’s strangely comforting.. but did she ever go through a heavy phase prior to being diagnosed? I gained 50 pounds because of it, and it took a year and a half to lose it.
edit: @ heehee- usually hyperthyroidism causes weight loss, while hypo causes fatigue, bloating, weight gain, even hair loss! I’m sorry your dr got it wrong, it really sucks when they haven’t got it figured out.

  15. Ladee says:

White people, if you’re going to have black babies PLEASE OH PLEEEEEEEASE take them to hair salon if you dont know how to comb that kind of hair. Better yet, just her to my house. I comb it for you!

  16. whatevs says:

That’s it? I was hoping for empty Activia containers, condom wrappers, or some sort of scandalous note. Not a receipt for thyroid medication.

  17. amanda says:

it’s totally legal to do that. think about it: it’s garbage. it’s been abandoned.

  18. My fellow on Facebook shared this link with me and I’m not dissapointed that I came here.

  19. Sam says:

I added this page to Reddit

  20. what about hypothyroidism? adrenal fatigue the same thing?
