Bar Refaeli studied really hard to be a model, poses while covered in Dead Sea mud

Supermodel Bar Refaeli appears on the cover of British GQ for its September issue, and (as usual) her body looks absolutely stunning in the photoshoot. While she will never be considered an intellectual genius, however, Bar certainly has a technique to her modelling. In a few excerpts from the accompanying interview, she gives away a secret of her success:

On Perfecting Her Poses: “I’ve learned how to do this. I study all of my pictures. Which turn of the hip is sexier, which toe to curl or leg to straighten. I know every bone.”

On Childhood Modelling Past: “One of my first memories was asking my mother every day when my next shoot was going to be. I’d skip school to do it; I loved nothing more than being in front of the camera. I didn’t want it to stop.”

On Being Back Home: “It’s so wonderful to be here back in my home town. I woke up in my own bed and tonight I’ll sleep on my own pillow. I love this city. I’m glad I can shine a different light [on Israel]. When some people think about Israel, they think that we’re hiding in shelters all day long, afraid that we are going to have rockets falling on us.”

[From GQ]

Oh, Bar. While I won’t criticize her (untouchable) body or obvious prowess in front of the camera, she seems pretty vacuous, right? As in nothing is more important than getting her picture taken even if that means being a draft-dodger. Apparently, Bar even married (and then quickly divorced) one of her own relatives just to avoid her two years of compulsory service because “celebrities have other needs.” Never mind that fellow Israeli supermodel Etsi Ginzburg served her two years without complaint. Bar is also a customs dodger too, for what it’s worth.

Now, for more silly mindlessness from Bar, who has posted a few photos on her Twitter account of herself all slathered up in Dead Sea mud. Presumably, some people will get up in arms and describe this as “blackface,” but Kaiser points out that Bar’s probably just being dumb, not racist. I tend to agree, and even though Dead Sea mud is supposed to be great for the skin as a beauty treatment, I think Bar’s gotten a bit carried away here. Then again and with a body like that, she can afford to be less than serious about most things.

  1. LIVEALOT says:

looks fun yet pointless to share

  2. Flounder says:

I don’t think the mud is offensive. She’s just a little vacant.

  3. lol says:

Clearly not the brightest bulb in the chandelier but what else did you expect from her? She is/was a typical Dicaprio girlfriend. You don`t land that job based on your intellect! It`s obvious by now that Leo doesn`t like to be challenged in his private life!

  4. KLO says:

    Oh that’s really rich :D
Noone out of the United States thinks about racism when they see a photo like that. I’m european, I know some of the history of blackface, but it’s mud, people. Mud.

  5. girlwithapearl says:

    jesus that body

  6. RADC says:

i’ve been to the dead sea and that’s what everyone does when they visit. although i gotta say the whole “rockets everywhere” is a bit dumb. but she wasn’t in the west bank or gaza so that’s probably why.

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

Well I admire passion and modeling is something she is clearly passionate about. So good for her. I also don’t find the picture of her covered in mud offensive…looks like a ton of fun as a matter of fact.

  8. gee says:

Mud baths are a thing, why would anyone assume racism? Blackface is racist, but this simply not.

  9. Irene says:

Its just mud. No big deal. I dont think she is intelligent but nothing in that interview struck me as too dumb. Shes kind of boring to me.

  10. Roma says:

I believe the other Israeli model’s name is “Esti”. My bf is a huge fan of her in the SI swimsuit issues.

  11. RocketMerry says:

I think you’re supposed to completely cover yourself in mud there. Even the hair!
Anyways, she’s smokin’ hot, and she poses better than most “supermodels”.

  12. KJ says:

Oh my god, blackface? Really? I’m black and there are very clear ways in which people make light of or use blackface. Slathering mud from the dead sea (which is good for your skin, and no different from other mud treatments) is unequivocally not one of them. This is one of those moments where the inference that something is “racist” is more troubling than the thing being considered “racist.” The first thing you think of is “blackface” when someone is covered in sea mud? THAT’S the part that’s wrong.

  13. Rita says:

The Dead Sea background was done with a “green screen” affect. It’s not real. The fact is, she tried to change the motor oil herself and something went terribly wrong. Dead Sea mud baths just sound more glamorous.

    @brin- Morning honey.

  14. Laura says:

I love that she’s not sickly thin. She looks healthy and her proportions are, um… wow.

  15. renee says:

@ KLO: Yes, we can see here that this is mud but you are wrong, there is a history of blackface not just in the U.S., but in England, Australia, Canada, the Caribbean and in many other parts of Europe as well. I am sure that many people who are familiar with the history of racism in visual culture make the connection when they witness things that are similar to it.

  16. mags says:

yeah, cause when i think about Israel i immediately think about how the Israelis are all hiding from rockets, riiiight…nevermind i shouldn’t open that can of worms.

  17. silken_floss says:

Nah, I’m black and that’s not offensive to me. Bar is just being her usual, vapid self. Looks like fun actually :)

  18. Moneypenny says:

@KJ I totally agree. I’m black too and was surprised to see a reference to black face. She’s not making social commentary, she’s bathing in mud–what’s she supposed to look like when in black mud? I don’t think anyone actually thinks this is racist, but it is troubling that people would just assume black people will be offended by this.

  19. mln76 says:

What idiot would think this is racist??? I am black and that’s the furthest thing from my brain. She’s putting Dead Sea mud on because it’s good for the skin and people have been doing it for ages.

  20. TL says:

Models; I’ll never fully support them. What exactly do they bring to world other than a in demand supply of tissue paper for adolescent boys and grown men? Also they remind the rest of us that God hates us.

  21. bros says:

yah Mags, that’s what I was thinking too….:)

  22. horizonte says:

she’s not being racist in any way, this is what everybody does when they go to the dead sea.
i like what she said about shining a different light on israel: the issue has become so politicized that everyone forgets there are real people living there, on both sides of the mess, with real lives, who just want to work, be with their families and be happy. whatever you think of their governments, try to see the human beings as well.

  23. Cammie says:

I doubt she is a racist and Iam not a big fan of her either…but I can tolerate more then the new GF..

She is aleast natural ( No plastic Sugery)

and hasn’t lied about nudes the press..

She used to be okay with being in the background…

  24. Brodie B says:

Anyone who thinks this is blackface is a complete and utter moron. It a Dead Sea spa treatment

  25. Truthful says:

I think Leo was genius, to change up his mindless banter from this chick..

move on to a different mindless banter, its gets old.

    cute but dumb as heck.

I’ve always wondered if that mud stuff works, the spa I occasionally go to, claims to have some kind of “special mud”..

all she offers is face, it gets tired.

  26. JaneWonderfalls says:

She’s really cute, I love her shape, I wish I still had that kind of body…Okay I never did but wishful thinking:-)

  27. horizonte says:

@truthful: i was on a day trip to the dead sea and spent too much time on the sulphur pools and didn’t have enough time to get to the mud in the end. i ended up only applying it in one of my arms, before heading to the water. that arm was unbelievably smooth, fresh, and soft, you wouldn’t believe it! it was so noticeable that even my husband commented on it, completely unprompted. the place i went to was kibbutz ein gedi, no idea if they might sell online… i’ve seen Ahava products where i live in department stores as well.

  28. lrm says:

    are you kidding me? blackface?
lol you have got to be joking…
I too have been to the dead sea
it’s a whole set up with bins of mud and showers to rinse off…
It’s a spa tourist thing that everyone does!
and the mud happens to be black-but could just as easily be green or taupe or whatever….
but the mud is so nice for the skin, as is the water-it’s so soft and smooth afterwards….

wow, the american PC [and i am american] is beyond out of control at this point. get a life is how i feel about this pc garbage.

or, just miss out on cool and beautiful experiences b/c of fear of being photographed and interpreted as not racially sensitive or whatever other PC topic out there….

Israel is an amazing country-I visited twice on the way to africa-i am SO glad i went the first time, which prompted me to plan the second stop, a longer one.

It is on my list of places that I would go back to for sure…..
and it’s nearly ‘first world’ in terms of amenities, so no worries there.

I recommend it. when the political timing is right, of course-which ebbs and flows greatly….
ps-I have a photo of myself somewhere with 3 other people-two south africans and one german-all of us covered in mud, which is kind of this greenish dark brown that sometimes looks black, such as in this phot of Bar R. it’s a hilarious pic though….one of my memoirs(: not something I agonize over being blackface about. geesh.

  29. Blackface my arse, everyone’s up to their neck in the mud in Dead Sea, it’s why you go. I did it, have the photo’s and don’t have a racist bone in my big fat blond body. Get a grip.
Sidenote: Your skin is bloody amazing after it, I now use the Dead Sea Minerals [or something, too lazy to go look at packaging] products, they do an excellent face soap. You get it in health shops in Britain, don’t know about USA etc. but would totally recommend it.

  30. lrm says:

btw, clay and mud do ‘work’-they are known to clear skin b/c of the minerals and properties which draw out toxins.
the skin is the largest organ of the body, not just a covering but a living organ.
and, clay masks for the face should be a clue that they work, as well…
if you get the kind that does not have a bunch of chemical synthetics added to it and fake perfumes, which can break out the skin more.

I am not saying it’s an instant panacea, but used regularly helps to maintain health and beauty….rather like shampooing and body cleaning.

  31. KLO says:

@renee, thanks for reminding me. Much appreciated. I’m from a country where people with african ethnic background have always been rare, so my knowledge is somewhat limited.

  32. Gretchen says:

BOYCOTT AHAVA PRODUCTS!!! Actually boycott ALL dead sea products. It is racially segregated by Israel to maximise the exclusion of Palestinians, and Palestinians are forbidden from also making a profit from the natural resources of the Dead Sea.

  33. jinni says:

I think the reason why this is being seen as racist is because she wore a Halloween costume that was borderline offensive (wore an afro and basketball jersey) to black people, plus she has said some hateful things about Eygptians and Arabs being primitive. So, considerding her history some people are looking at this with her past in mind.

The pics look harmless/unoffensive to me.

  34. The Original Ashley says:

Butterface. She’s a year older than me but has the face of a Middleton. And she’s completely vacant.

Proud Israeli? So proud you couldn’t do what all of the other Israeli’s of your county do? Ugh. Can’t stand this chick. She’s only famous because of Leo and even then all she’s gotten out of it is a Garnier ad and Jersey Shore shots by Terry Richardson. There are much prettier models out there that have the bod AND the face.

  35. HannahF says:

I agree with the mud does not equal blackface consensus. Also, the other model’s name is Esti which is short for Esther. With respect to the rocket comment, it is not widely reported but the Palestinians lob rockets into Israel on a very regular basis. Also, I’m a big fan of Shahar Peer who is a top 15 tennis player. Even she completed her military service.

  36. Nikki Girl says:

She does seem a little dumb, but GOD would I kill to have that body! I think she’s absolutely gorgeous, face and body both. And her boobs are all natural and they look amazing. So jealous.

  37. Mare says:

I still don’t understand why is she considered stupid? I know this is gossip site and that’s fine but calling someone dumb or vacuous has to be based on something. She talked about her job, she’s a model and was asked questions about posing for photos. That’s it. And everybody who goes to Dead Sea does this thing with mood, it’s healthy and completely normal. There’s nothing rasist about it or dumb, why is she dumb for covering in mud? I don’t get it. And this opinion that all DiCaprio’s girlfriend are stupid? While I’m no fan of Gisele, she is not a stupid woman.

  38. Just Me says:

Irm, when you’re in Palestine maybe you should take a drive to Gaza, negev desert and the west bank to get a taste of how wonderful the zionists are.

  39. mimi says:

It’s a special kind of mud that is supposed to do wonders to your skin.
You are supposed to cover your entire body + face.

I heard about it, because some people travel just for that mud and some people who have skin disease travel once a year to the dead dea to do exactly that.

I wish I had some of that stuff.

As for her being full of herself and a bit obsessed with getting her picture taken.
I would have been more sympathetic had she been 16 years old.

But she is supposed to be 26? 27 YO?

and all she cares about is to be famous?!

She’s got an amazing body and face though.

  40. hatsumomo says:

Gah, if I had access to Dead Sea mud I sure as hell wouldn’t put it just on my face for fear of being called racist. I’d put it all over my body and and in every crevice, really get it in there good. If its good for the face why cant it be great for the rest of your body?!! That chick has it made.

And on another note, big deal if she didnt do her compulsory service. Plenty of people in the US don’t serve in our military because they just don’t want to. Can you imagine the uproar we would have if the States tried to mandate 2 years of service from every single citizen? The madness. I wouldn’t knock her for dodging it.

  41. SashaT says:

    what a babe!

    Mud rules

  42. Jeannified says:

I still think Leonardo DiCaprio is a fool for having dumped Bar for BLAKE LIVELY!!! Please!!!

  43. Bubulle says:

I don’t get why people think Blake is a downgrade. Blake is a C-list actress with a bad reputation and Bar is a C-list model with a bad reputation. Where is the difference ?

  44. Truthful says:

    @Bubulle, I agree totally.

Thanks everyone w/info about spa type mud packs..I’m always leery that I am paying my hard earned dollars for something they will profess to be
“real” and its full of unatural crap at the spa.

I use dead sea salts but always wanted to try a good mud pak, but a REAL one and what she has on doesn’t get any realer-LOL

  45. corey says:

she’s soooo pretty. She actually looks better in the twitter pics(mud and all) than in the magazine.

  46. HannahF says:

I’ve mentioned my background before and I don’t want to get into a political discussion. I come to this site literally to bitch about celebrities.

I do have to mention something about service in the Israel Defense Force. Regardless of who did what to whom and why, Israel is surrounded by enemies. Compulsory service in such a situation is far different than in the US.

  47. Callumna says:

    Not blackface, just mud.

If she weren’t selling her body and this article weren’t all about it I’d not make any comment– but I don’t think she looks too special. Not toned, just blah.

    Almost a little marshmellowlike.

  48. Venefica Delirium says:

I’ll take her body, but keep my face/facial features.

  49. Luci says:

I went to the black sea last summer and I took the same pictures jeje
the mud is amazing! its leaves your skin soft as a baby’s
    she’s not doing blackface

btw, you can also go to the black sea in Jordan

  50. Eve says:

    @ Just Me:

Thank you for your comments on this thread.

  51. Yasmine says:

I totally agree with boycotting Israeli products, esp. since the vast majority of those dead sea products comes from illegal Israeli settlements (it’s called occupation – not ‘dispute’) in the military occupation of the West Bank.
Sure, this site is for celebrity bitchfests, so Bar sillyface needs to be called out on that too.

@ Just me: Also, good luck on your next visit home! I’ve seen the Boycott-Divestment-Sanctions of Israel movement grow exponentially in the last 10 yrs. So send our solidarity and love with you to Palestine!

  52. Just Me says:

    Thanks Eve & Yasmine :-)

  53. Rori says:

That’s not offensive! This is what you do when you visit the Dead Sea. The mud IS really good for your skin – you end up looking like a baby. It’s fun. :)

  54. please says:

“supermodel” what a joke. Look at her candid beach/pool pictures. She has extremely short legs and is not built like a model, let alone a supermodel. She is your everyday hot chick; that’s it.

  55. please says:

    @Just me

“Irm, when you’re in Palestine maybe you should take a drive to Gaza, negev desert and the west bank to get a taste of how wonderful the zionists are.”

I completely agree!!!!!! Murderers, a bunch of murderers are what they are.

  56. Venefica Delirium says:

When people used to tell me “I’m no supermodel”, I used to get very hurt by it. Now when people tell me I’m “no supermodel”, all it really means is:

    1.) I’m not thin enough.
    2.) I’m not tall enough.
3.) My folks aren’t rich enough.

The standards for modeling have lowered considerably. While I like that models look more like average girls, I hate that they’re not judged as critically as non-models/non-celebrities are.
