Joe Simpson sends weepy congrats to Jessica Simpson (update: prenup?)

Jessica Simpson’s rep has confirmed Jessica and Eric Johnson’s happy engagement news to everybody at this point, and without any sense of shame or awkwardness at having a big announcement just nine days after Nick Lachey and Vanessa announced their engagement. Jessica even flashed her ring at a mall appearance on Friday – a ruby with two diamonds, set in yellow gold. No disrespect to Zales, but Eric has tacky style if he picked out this ring. Anyway, beyond the confirmation from Jess’s rep, I was waiting for Jessica’s father to say something. After all, this is the man who so obviously prefers (worships) one daughter over the other. This is a man who talks freely about the size of his daughter’s boobs. This is a man who seems to compulsively c-ckblock his daughter, in business and in life (the thought of c-ckblocking Jess turns him on, I think). So… as you can imagine, Papa Joe was probably weeping at the thought of Jessica getting married:

Someone sure sounds excited about walking his daughter down the aisle!

Just days after Jessica Simpson accepted a ruby-and-diamond engagement ring from her boyfriend of five months, football player Eric Johnson, the bride-to-be’s father, Joe Simpson, posted his good wishes on Twitter.

“So very happy for Jess and Eric,” he posted Sunday night. “May they have a lifetime of joy and happiness.”

Joe joined Johnson, 31, at the filming of Jessica’s Thanksgiving PBS special last month, where the singer, 30, gushed to PEOPLE about her relationship with her beau, which she termed “just normal, thank God. He’s very, very supportive.”

She added that she “couldn’t ask for a better man in my life right now.”

[From People]

Does anyone want to take bets on Jessica and/or Papa Joe f-cking this engagement up? I can see it going in one of two ways: either Eric has been fully prepared for every step of this engagement-to-wedding day famewhore extravanganza, and this is totally what he signed on for, OR Eric is going to run screaming in about two months, after Jessica’s millionth interview where she talks about Eric “loving her curves” and “being so smarty-pants” – and after the millionth time of Papa Joe making some kind of comment about his beautiful daughter’s massive rack. Ugh. This family. I want to hear from Tina.

UPDATE: Now I feel dumb for not seeing this one coming. According to PopEater’s gossip guy, Papa Joe and Jessica are already fighting over whether or not she needs a prenup. Note to Jess: You need a prenup! I’m with your daddy on this one. According to PopEater’s sources, “Nick walked away with over $10 million of her money when they divorced, because they had no prenup. You would think she would have learned her lesson. But where romance is concerned, Jess follows her heart not her head. At the moment, Joe is sitting back and being a great father, supporting his daughter and his future son-in-law… However, you can bet after all the excitement has died down, Joe is going to do everything in his power to make sure Jessica doesn’t walk down the aisle until Eric signs away any right he might have to Jessica’s enormous fortune.” Jess is worth an estimated $100 million, if not more.

*puts on her rose colored glasses* I got engaged to my husband after knowing him for 5 months…and unfortunately, coincidentally, it was right after my ex got engaged to his now wife. However, since we’re not famous, I didn’t find out until our mutual friends filled me in how close our timing was.
Jessica does not get to use this excuse. However, I’m going to just live in the happy world, and pretend he had this planned for a while, and that the timing was coincidental. La la la… *skips off to pick some daisies*

  2. alejandro says:

She looks just like him, put a wig on him and you have Jessica.

  3. Stronzilla says:

The hell with Tina, I want to hear what a psychologist makes of the body language in these pictures of Jessica and Papa Joe! And why is it no one ever hears from Mrs. Papa Joe? This man disturbs me on so many levels. Eric doesn’t stand a chance and if he had half a brain he’d be begging them for his place at Wharton back. Guess just because you’re smart doesn’t mean your intelligent. Blech, going to bleach my eyeballs.

  4. LOVE ANGELINA says:

GAWD such poor taste in engagement rings. Yellow gold? Good grief. Platinum or sterling silver setting is what an engagement ring should be made of..IMO. Why a ruby instead of a diamond. My goodness, it being Neil Lane is its only saving grace.

I was surprised by this engagement business from Jessica, she just met this guy this year right? Not long ago. Anyway Joe’s congratulations didn’t sound bad and I ditto his sentiments.

  5. brin says:

“Newlyweds 2″? Ugh, papa Joe is slimy. I think Eric will toe the family line, he doesn’t have much else going on.
I agree about the ring, too, but I’m sure Jess picked it out & paid for it.

  6. Riley says:

Yeah, I smell a reality show about the engagement— buying the dress, the flowers, how she plans to style her hair without Ken. The ring is terrible. It looks like one of those rings reclusive old women bid for on Ebay, like something a hoarder would wear.

  7. ams511 says:

    i hate the ring! bleh!

  8. guesty says:

    still reeking of pathetic desperation.

  9. devilgirl says:

Pappy Simpson is creepy and disgusting. What is going on with those teeth? Someone needs to spend some money, at the very least, on some Crest whitestrips. Actually a dentist would be better.

  10. S says:

remember when britney spears dated an unemployed freeloader for 5 months, then bought her own engagement ring? how much does he get each month in child support?

  11. malachais says:

    @prettytarheel – LOL

Yawn. This won’t work out, her man is clearly a famewhore. What exactly does he do again?

  12. bellaluna says:

Aww, Pimpa McObvious, how sweet! Now, get to work, Pimpa; there’s lots to do, lots to do…

  13. TG says:

Thanks for the laughs this morning. I don’t think this guy will ever run from Jessica. He is getting what he wants. I think Pappa Joe screwed up Nick’s and Tony Romo’s relationships with Jess but they had other things going on in their lives.

I agree with everyone else, I smell a reality show and in marring a commoner they have someone they can control and maybe make jessica a household name again. Since he can’t marry her himself I guess getting someone he can control is probably the next best thing.

  14. bellaluna says:

Sidenote: If she’s worth $100M, why can’t she afford a stylist? Or a better stylist? Hell, when I was a divorced mother of 2, my friends and I did a better job of policing each others’ looks. Jeebus!

  15. Samigirl says:

Like I said before…she needs to think with her head, not her vagina. MAKE HIM SIGN A PRE-NUP, WOMAN!

  16. Carrie says:

Oh Jess- you really want that People cover, “How I Lost $50 Million”, don’t you?

GET A PRENUP!!! Hope for the best, but plan for the worst!

If she’s really worried about it, give him a generous settlement in the prenup- give him $1 million per year of marriage even, but DON’T give him access to half.

  17. alejandro says:

How can she be worth or make 100 million and not be listed not even once on Forbes list? A lot of PR from Papa Joe about how much she truly makes. Yes her line that her mother runs is successful but 100 million dollar profit for Jessica alone successful? Doubt it.

  18. LOVE ANGELINA says:

I never said Jessica was smart but if she doesn’t make this guy sign a prenup she is officially the dumbest person on the planet. When people say “Hey I wonder who did the dumbest thing ever?” I am gonna be like “Jessica Simpson. Jessica WAS worth like millions of dollars but she married this guy after like 5 months and like a year after the wedding he was gone, took HALF her money with him. Got in on her shoe business, he is now CEO, makes more than her and is her boss.”

It will go down like that, maybe, who knows.

  19. brin says:

She just can’t be that dumb, can she?
    Get the pre-nup!!!

  20. bellaluna says:

I had a ring that looked almost exactly like that in high school. It had a ruby, diamonds, and was yellow & Black Hills gold.

Thank God my hubby has better taste. He excels in jewelry, and is very blatant about anything he thinks is tacky. Can’t wait to hear his reaction to Tragically McObvious’ engagement ring!

  21. djork says:

    One hundred MILLION? For WHAT?!

  22. L says:

I have a ruby for my engagement ring so that doesn’t bother me. Maybe Jessica just doesn’t like diamonds-I know I don’t.

That said, the design of the ring itself is so blech. Her first ring was SO much better.

  23. fabgrrl says:

Stop griping about the ring! How shallow can you get? My engagement ring was a green sapphire in yellow gold. Not expensive, or rare, or fashionable, by any stretch of the imagination, but it was SPECIAL TO ME!

  24. malachais says:

fabgrrl, amen, BUT you have to remember that she’s “worth an estimated 100 million or so” so people are going to expect some crazy rock that makes hand hurt. :D

Guess she’ll have to buy that one for herself :/

  25. flutters says:

Eh, I think Simpson’s net worth is overestimated but I also think there will be a prenup if there is a wedding. Too much public discussion of it for there not to be.

I also think Eric Johnson will be trotted out to do interviews where he says he does too have money and a job. Featuring heavy gushing about Jessica of course about how she is too a smart girl and all that. People cover story, probably. Maybe Eric Johnson will get Ken Paves’s spot on Jessica’s reality show.

I automatically lose some respect for any guy who embraces the typical Simpson PR nonsense and I think Eric Johnson does.

  26. whatisay says:

where are y’all seeing the ring?

  27. ViktoryGin says:

This girl is so transparent. Not for one minute to a believe that the timing was coincidental. She probably goaded him into popping the question.

If she doesn’t sign a prenup then she just confirms what people already suspect. It’s just plan STUPID to marry someone after six months as it is, but then to make vulnerable a multi-million dollar fortune…not smart. She might as well have “meal ticket” tattooed to her head. I totally see this dude running through her money.

  28. Po says:

Ok, for some reason I get annoyed when people say that Nick took “her money”. They both made their fame together. Before newlyweds they were essentially in the same boat, weren’t they? They both were B/C list pop stars. They did newlyweds together and Nick endured her father for a couple of years. It was well-earned money on his part. End Rant :)

  29. Hautie says:

    I like the ring too.

She has already had the massive pear shaped diamond. And that marriage failed. How much money spent on a ring has nothing to do with a marriage being successful.

But is she had any sense at all… get eloped. And for all things holy… get that pre-nup signed.

And for the record. Nick Lachey desperately tried to get Jessica to sign one before they married. (yes I watched their show!) She refused. He was the one with all the money and property when they got married.

  30. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@Whatissay Go to People.Com. They show Jessica at an event for Dillards and they have inset picture of the ring.

@Po By the time they got divorced, Jessica Simpson was branding herself. HERSELF. Her name was on things NOT Nick’s. Jessica was the one making the most money. Not Nick. So yea Nick and Jessica made some money as a team but Jessica made more on her own. I could understand if Jessica had a brand of items that were marketed as Newlywed or Nick and Jessica but that wasn’t the case. Even after Jess broke it off with Nick Jessica still was bringing in money off of her name.

  31. snappyfish says:

please…this is just sad. This girl is beyond desperate. Her first husband, who she should never have left, is engaged so her free loading “football player” boyfriend now proposes?

Sad, get a pre-nup or come to your senses. The father is beyond gross. I wish the best for this silly stupid vapid little girl.

  32. chasingadalia says:

I’m with Po – Nick earned that ten million.

Now, onto the ring… what, Jessica didn’t pony up money to Eric for a Tiffany’s ring?

  33. Eww… i dont like the ring! :<

  34. mln says:

Wasn’t the story with Nick that back in the day when he was more famous and had a higher net worth Joe insisted that Jess refuse to sign a prenup? She probably feels bitter about taking Dad’s advice but once again not having one will bite her in the ass with this one.

  35. mollyb says:

I don’t like the ring either and I am not a unique-ring hater. In fact, I am sick to death of seeing the same tacky cluster of over-sized diamonds on every. single. girl’s hand, not to mention when they get marry and stuff their diamond-encrusted wedding ring on top of that, plus the obligatory aniversary ring on top of THAT. My engagement ring was a simple pearl and my wedding band was a plain gold band. That said, I do love the ruby–I like colored gems.

  36. Lori says:

Love is like playing cards, you start out with two hearts and a diamond. In the end all you want is a club and a spade.
    .
Get the prenup or get out.

  37. lilred says:

I see a rush to the alter so Jessica can be married first.

  38. MymaJane says:

I can’t stand the ring. Not a huge fan of three stone rings, and those rubies look cheap. And for the yellow gold…my engagement ring is currently being made in 19 carat yellow gold and has caesar engraving (scott kay) and is really gorgeous. Her ring looks like something he picked up at Claire’s Boutique.

  39. Naomi says:

Joe, School your daughter!!! No one should have a daughter this stupid at 30 years old!Cant she see he is a LOSER?

  40. melinda says:

@ Bellaluna- When I showed my husband her engagement ring he said, “Aw, that’s just sad, she didn’t even get a good engagement ring.”

  41. Kelley says:

OMG, even Joe Simpson has had nose surgery, blecch. This “engagement” should prove interesting as the months go by …

  42. Salina says:

Maybe the ruby means something. I like yellow gold better because it matches my skin tone. But if she had a huge diamond everyone would be saying she bought it. At least it looks like he can afford it

  43. Jessica says:

Jessica is one SAD individual, She’s SO insecure with herself.

EVERYONE and their Dog knows she ONLY did this to upstage Nick.

Marriage is not a race to see who gets married first or who has kids first.

I give this ( if they even make it to the altar) less than a year.

I’ll be pissed if they do another “Newlyweds Part 2″ or Pimp out her marriage to Eric like they did with poor Nick.

In the end, It is Nick & Vanessa who are going to be the happy happy couple.
    Not Jessica & Eric.

  44. 4Real says:

THINK OF THE SHOE FORTUNE JESSICA!! GET A PRENUP GIRL!! Then a TRO on your creepy father….ugh!

  45. Maritza says:

As long as she likes the ring that’s what matters! Everyone has their own unique style. Papa Joe is right on this one, she should get a prenup, just in case.

  46. luna says:

@ Love Angelina: agree with your first post, but not your second. I get that she became more marketable than Nick, but do you honestly think that with Britney and Christina around, Jessica would have gotten all the work and business opportunities she did without Newlyweds to set her apart? At least Mandy Moore is a semi-decent actress. Without Nick, Jessica would have probably ranked last in the early 2000s pop princesses ranking.

Maybe she would be more credible if she didn’t rely on her love life to keep her in the spotlight. Even early in her music career when her singing future looked bright, she was all about pushing her virginity and her relationship with a boy bander.

  47. Heather says:

If there was a reality show I would have to watch! And I dont even have cable. But I would get it just for that show!

  48. Alarmjaguar says:

Hear, hear mollyb. I haven’t seen the ring and believe the posters who are saying the design sucks, but who cares if it is yellow gold w/ a ruby. I have a saphire because I didn’t want a diamond that looks like everyone else’s ring (I know, I know, lots of people when the saphire route, too). But lay off her for the gold and stone.

  49. PrettyTarheel says:

    @Lori:
I LOVE it! I’m still in the hearts and diamond phase, but damn, that’s a good analogy for a lot of marriages!

  50. Camille says:

Boy does Jessica look like her Daddy. *shudder*

I don’t see this thing ending well at all.

  51. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@Luna Yea I know without Nick Jess wouldn’t have gotten to market herself the way she was able too. I agree with that.

  52. Jayna says:

@Salina. It’s stated somewhere that that ring cost him $100,000. It’s a very expensive ring.

  53. Henriette says:

She added that she “couldn’t ask for a better man in my life right now.”

I love love love the “right now” comment. ‘Cuz I wish them well but fear it won’t last. Every single couple should get a pre-nup!

  54. trollydolly says:

I can’t believe the comments about the ring – at least it’s not the boring ubiquitous diamond type one sees everywhere else!
Good luck to her. I hope she’ll be happy, she deserves it. Anything to free her from Papa Joe’s clutches…..!

  55. Musicfan says:

In the beginning Nick had the money, Jessica was in debt to her record company. He wanted a prenup her father told her not to sign. They married. What 3 years later Jessica was a A list star and Nick was C list at best.

She was the star, all the opportunitys came to her, commercials, perfume and etc. When she filed for divorce she offered Nick like 2 million to go away, but he refused (Wow the Irony) and he ended up with 15 million of her money.

However the star Jessica was in the Nick Lachey days, or no longer true. Her albums aren’t sucessful she has gained a ton of weight and hasn’t been seen singing anywhere popular in a few years. If Spears is worth about 150-200 million, Simpson is no way worth 100 m. I say 40-50 at best.

  56. justme says:

I havn’t seen joe in along time , he’s looking Oldddddd . Hollywood will put the stress on you , make you look older than what you’re .

  57. Mike says:

So is this the same guy that was sooooo…. adamant about her marrying as a Virgin. Not so now. She has been worn all over Hollywood like a throw away pair of shoes.

  58. leslie says:

Sounds like a lot of jealous people on line. At least I hear nothing about drugs and driving drunk about her and she is investing in something for the future. She has at least got her head in the right place.

  59. Micalu says:

Ok i have read some comments here and #1 in regards to never getting married to someone after only 5 months is ridicules. I say this I knew my husband for 2 days we moved in together, then three months later we were married and are still married happily 10 years later. #2 the cost and look of the ring do not matter as long as it has meaning and is special. My wedding ring cost 65 dollars and is a small white gold band with a diamond chip. I still wear it to this day because it is special to me right along with the other bigger diamond rings my husband bought me later on in our marriage. So you materialistic synics who don’t believe in love need to jump. Also she does need to sign the prenup just in case.
