Enquirer: Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox secretly writing Friends movie script

We’ve heard rumors of a Friends movie for years, and rumored holdout Jennifer Aniston has made it clear in the past that she’s not on board. In an interview with Hello! published in August, 2008, Aniston said “I believe [a movie] wouldn’t be a very good idea. Friends was a wonderful time in my life and is now – like so many other things – a chapter that’s been closed. Let’s keep looking forward.” Courteney Cox addressed a potential movie in an interview just last week. She said that she wishes that Friends could be a film phenomenon like Sex & The City but that “I don’t think it’s going to happen,” and added that it would need to have the same creators. “Would [series creators David Crane and Marta Kauffman] want to write it? Because they’d have to be involved. I don’t know … a lot of things would have to break just right for it to work. But we’ve daydreamed about it.

According to the National Enquirer, Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox are indeed hoping to make a Friends movie in the same vein as Sex & The City. They’re also allegedly secretly writing a script for it:

Jennifer Aniston and Courtney Cox are so jealous of the runaway success of the “Sex and The City” franchise, they’ve hatched a plan to take “Friends” to the big screen, say sources.

The BFFs are working on a top secret script – and it looks like Jen may also direct the project.

“After years of saying no, Jen and Courteney decided the time is right for a ‘Friends’ reunion, an insider told the Enquirer.

“Courteney and Jen both watched with evnt as the ‘Sex and The City’ cast parlayed their cable TV show into a massive movie success, said the insider.

“So Jen is campaigning to make a ‘Friends’ movie finally happen.” And with Jen’s back, the project is all but a sure thing…

Jen is campaigning to get the series’ creators, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, to give the movie their blessing. But she’s already called the rest of the show’s cast – and they’ve all given a big thumbs up to the idea.”

[From The National Enquirer, print edition, June 28, 2010]

So is the Enquirer taking the hints that Cox may have been dropping in that interview and running with them? They may have insider information. We heard from the actor who played coffeehouse barista Gunther last September that a movie was already planned and that everyone had signed on. I could see a Friends movie coming, but it will probably be a pale overly packaged version of the original, like that movie franchise excuse for selling us more Sex & The City than we can take. Of course all the actors are on board. There’s a ton of money to be made and apart from Jennifer Aniston and maybe Courteney Cox, we haven’t seen many of them on either our small or big screens lately.

hmmm I really can’t imagine HOW that show would qualify to be more than a TV movie…the best reunion I have seen so far was the faux Seinfeld reunion on Curb. But Friends wasn’t ever as funny as Seinfeld

  2. Melanie says:

    Oh, please no. LOLOL. Whyyy?

  3. bite me says:

do we really need a friends movie on the big screen, how about a special thanksgiving episode and damn courtney is so jolie
EDIT: doesn’t courtney have GREAT hair

  4. Praise St. Angie! says:

don’t think a Friends movie would work. I would, frankly, rather see a 90210 (the original cast!) reunion movie than a Friends movie.

not only is that Aniston pre-nose job, but the pre-botoxed Cox can actually smile!

EDIT: I love Aniston’s outfit in the full cast pic on the red carpet.

  5. a says:

no thanks, ladies. just let it go.

  6. lucy2 says:

LOL – one says she’s not interested, the other says she would only if the shows creators did it…and that turns into the two of them secretly writing it! Come on.

Of all 6 of them, these two probably need the movie the least – CC has her hit show (which I don’t watch) and Jen has a steady movie career (which is blah but she’s still booked solid).

  7. LOVE ANGELINA says:

@bite me what does that mean? I could care either way. I won’t be going to see it.

  8. Melanie says:

I hope Brad Pitt makes a cameo appearance. That was a great episode.

  9. bite me says:

sorry but brad pitt has a MOVIE career to attend to

  10. Hannah says:

I’d rather they did a feature length Thanksgiving episode – like a made for tv type movie. Maybe an hour and a half long.

    Rather than a movie.

  11. andrea says:

good god, the world does not need anymore friends. the 90s are over. jeezus. JA should cut her hair bob-length again.

  12. andrea says:

in that first pic with the old nose, all i can see is iggy pop now

  13. rraven says:

Botox ruined CC’s looks, I watch Cougar Town and although she’s really good in it and its surprisingly funny her forehead CANNOT move, sometimes I watch the entire episode studying her forehead and it doesn’t budge. Wonder if it feels numb or does it feel like its moving but it actually isn’t? Having said all that she still looks good, considering she’s nearly 50 but still, a normal wrinkly forehead would have been so much better, right? As for the friends movie, never going to happen I think.

  14. Just a Poster says:

One never knows gang.. remember Sex and the City has 2 movies. :/

  15. Me says:

I would love a Friends movie! And JA and CC are both very attractive women, IMO.

  16. fran says:

Aniston resembles Stan Laurel in the top pic…or at least her chin does, lol

  17. d says:

    such a bad idea…

  18. Gwen says:

I know she didn’t like it at the time, but I really love Jen’s hair short like in that last picture…

  19. Toe says:

She does looks nice with short hair.

  20. Andy says:

It’s painful to look at these pics and even older pics. Both women looked so much better before what appears to be plastic surgery. It’s not age that’s making them look bad lately, it looks like plastic surgery. CC looks weird now from what looks like a bad eye job which is a shame because she had beautiful eyes.

  21. Kim says:

CC said in Marie Claire she longer uses Botox

  22. Lem says:

    I was/am a HUGE “Friends” fanatic

now I’m more of a can’t Rachel play anything but Rachel hater.

I think watching Joey be a dumb@ss at 45 would be sad. Monica driving Chandler back to Janice w/ her uber control over the twins would be sad. Phoebe looking old and still dressing in peasant skirts would be sad. Ross leaving Rach for Aisha Tyler would be overdue!
Maybe (as stated) a thanksgiving movie ala Facts of Life.
As a girl who has seen every episode a million times… I wouldn’t even pay for that. Maybe a decade ago; but they waited too long

  23. mollination says:

DAMN! I think JA looks amazing in that one navy-blue-dress-deep-cutout dress! Holy cow!

As for friends – I’m impartial. I’d watch it on DVD.

  24. Beth says:

I hope they do make a movie then people would stop talking about it. I really don’t see how this would work considering there really isn’t any long running storylines. Their extended tv episodes were boring and it was obvious that the writers were finding it difficult to stretch the episodes.

  25. For Sooth? says:

Oh yea, another vapid women’s movie.

  26. nnn says:

Whatever, I would rather see a “DALLAS” reunion movie based on who REALLY shot JR !

I am still not convinced that it was Sue Ellen’s little sister, Kristin Shepard.

  27. Cruisin Through says:

Ir’s a BS story. I don’t think any of them want a movie. Cox and Aniston don’t need it.

  28. nana says:

the two were attractive, JA soso. and the hair is soo 60s. the tallest woman looks good. Is she Lisa Kudrow? Sorry i dont watch friends and I dnt know the cast except i know courtney and aniston because of brad pitt.

  29. nana says:

Aniston should open her lips when she smile. if she dont, she looks fugly. Just found it now.

  30. Camille says:

@ andrea: ITA about Jennifer- she should cut her hair that length again, it really suited her, far more than the hair she has now. I also wondered who that fug dude was with the gorgeous Courteney in that header pic! I totally see Iggy Pop now too.

@ bite me: Courtney does have gorgeous hair doesn’t she! I love that she wears it different ways. She is such a pretty woman and a competent actress and comedian to boot.

A Friends movie would be a TERRIBLE idea, but I could see a one off TV special. I think that would be the best format for that particular show. Best to keep it to TV where it (and possibly its actors lol) belongs.

  31. Howl says:

Why no?… I mean I don’t know whats wrong with this people… anyway I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A FRIENDS MOVIE I defeinitely would pay for it, I mean Friends deserves that more than Sex and The City.

  32. jaytee says:

there should be a friends movie, but we all know that it would just be a dissapointment… like the long awaited new Indianna Jones film which was just crap.
seinfeld should come back.. fuck friends

  33. katie says:

@howl i agree i would certainly go see it anything is better than “SATC” friends is by far the best thing that has ever been on my tv screen and anyone elses i think a movie would be a very good idea i hope it happens please

  34. earthangel says:

i would love to see a friends movies most wonderful show ever…most of u here are haters so just F..off

  35. Jasmine says:

I Lov friends and hav seen all the episodes, bt am nt sure that there is enough story left to do a film. It could be friends years on where it shows monica and chandlers family etc. But i dunno cos that wuldnt last a whole movie. Bsides much as I want to see more of Friends, i dont want the perfect image i hav of it destroyed like the last series of scrubs. I think a special episode now and then wuld b a great idea, but am not so sure about an actual film =S

  36. shane says:

i think friends the movie will be great it will be great to see them back on the big screen and they can put a episode in a film so i think they shuld do it me and 468 people in the schoo agree and much more so this shuld happen

  37. daniel says:

i agrree with shane me and 624 in my school

  38. shane says:

i agree with daniel and i think it would be good to see what there lives were the last 7 years so the movies could be flash backs for example
    ross and rachel married
joey martied so see his life
    rachel pregnent again
    phoebe have kids with mike
    this story will be great
now on my face book group 4567 people wantnthis so i say LET THERE BE FRIENDS THE MOVIE any one wanna joi the group leave a message (theres a secret name)

  39. friends i agree says:

i agree i hav go lods of friends who want it
